In an effort to keep the Shop Talk area on track as a good place for knife info, lets all try to avoid Zombie talk, Rubber Duckies, Monkeys, and similar non-knife related chit-chat and wasted bandwidth.

If you have something to add to a discussion, by all means make your post. If the post is just to incite an argument, make a silly statement, post song lyrics, put up photshopped pictures of people, etc.........take it to Around the Grinder or the Pirates Cove.

I think we all can clean up the clutter and long threads here , and keep this forum the place where people get good knife info.

Some advise:
If you have real world advise about the subject matter - post a reply. If it is just something you heard or read, let a person who does that thing post a reply.

If you don't like the person or the subject of a thread, make one post stating your disagreement ....in a polite and family friendly way....and then just don't go back to that thread again. There is no need for eleven pages of "Yes you did - No I didn't" childish behavior.

If you think the advise given is wrong, speak out POLITELY - and then , after you have had your say, let it be.

If you think the thread is dumb....just move on and don't post at all.

We all like to cut up a bit, but use restraint in posting silly answers. I am guilty here, so I will try and follow my own advise.

Name calling and any offensive behavior will not be tolerated. I will lock the thread if it starts. I have not been one to issue warnings and demerits, but I will if forced to.

This is a great place - I am sure we can all work together and keep it that way.

Thanks - Moderator

Am I misunderstanding the part about locking a thread if abuse starts? We could lose a good thread if someone decides to act up. I can see if the whole thread goes to pot but...

No Photochops?...... Hey! My "custom" photos are usually visual aids in making a point or lightening up a thread(And I am usually my own victim... okay Sammy, too.). I will tighten up the filter for you but I think a little visual stimuli is a good thing. For example...

I make light, here... but also sacrifice my dignity and possible demerit points to make a statement...

I don't think we should sterilize Shop Talk, either. It would be akin to outlawing knives because some folks use them to hurt people. I agree with Stacey that we are letting things get off track, lately. It is First and foremost a KNIFEMAKING Q&A. Plus I don't think we use Around The Grinder enough. It is the perfect place for philosophical discussion and general off-topic, well humoured ribbing. IMO, NEGATIVITY and MALICE are our enemies, not humour and character flaire.

Rick

EDITED to make my statements and intent more clear.

I apologize for my contributions to the downfall of said threads. I will keep it tame...except for to comment on Rick's pictures.

No one is talking about sterilizing Shop talk......and there won't be any locked threads unless the entire thread or the OP goes way off base. I can edit any single post that needs to be removed.

Rick's photopost was in jest, and i am sure he was trying to show what I was referring to. If the humorous photo is of something related to the thread and useful info, fine. If it is meant as derogatory, or is offensive in nature ( some people may find any photo of Rick offensive), then it should be posted in Around the Grinder.

A forumite sent me a reminder that anyone with a problem with another person and his posting can elect to "Ignore" that person ,by clicking the ignore button.

Click on the persons name at the top of a post
Click View Profile
On the left is a list of options - click the ignore button.

Thank you for understanding my post as I meant it, Stacy. Your response took care of my concerns.

Rick

Just as a thought, I think the main reason around the grinder doesn't get used like it should, is because only paying members can post there, whereas, here, anyone can post.

I personally don't hang out on this forum alot because there seems to be much tension, so while I'm around, I haven't thought it worthwhile to start paying for a membership, thus I only post here or in the custom knife forum.

I do agree with the Mod though, I almost didn't join this forum a year ago because when I first looked around here, the first thread I saw was several pages long, and consisted of people attacking one another for no apparent reason. Fortunately I saw all of the good knifemaking resources and such, and decided to stay.

Just some thoughts from someone standing on the side of all of the mentioned tension and arguments.

Stephen

Thanks, Stephen... good point about the membership limitations. However, I think if you are a maker and find BF to be useful, then a basic membership is the least you can do to support the site. I think of all the money I save on books, dvds and lessons....

But I also agree that if you don't feel good about the environment, you may not want to commit.

Rick

I do think some of us might have a pretty sick sense of humor,… which could be taken the wrong way sometimes. I don’t think too many really mean anything by it though. I wish we could just give each other the benefit of the doubt, and try not to take ourselves too seriously.

Stacy, cutting a little slack for everyone once in a while, (and I know you have) within reason, would't be a bad thing. The "problem" with us
makers is that we take pride in our work, so we can, naturally, get a little defensive when we perceive that someone is
"pissing on our cornflakes".
But, I agree with you. There comes a point where the thread becomes completely counter-productive, where all you now
have are grenades being thrown back and forth between conflicting points of view. Then you have to blow the whistle and stop the round.

Remember, the people on this forum are some of the only ones with eyes that do not glaze over, when we talk about our knife making passion. That's gotta be good for something.

“CANOLA OIL”
Key of G
(Sung to the tune of “Kodachrome”)

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder I can think at all
Though my lack of education hasn't hurt me much
I can read the writings on the walls

Chorus:
Canola oil, it gives us those nice bright colors
And gives us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Hofi hammer, I'd love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Canola oil away

If you took all the knives I made when I was nimble
Brought 'em all together for one night
I know they'd never match my sweet imagination
Everything looks worse in black and white

Chorus

Mama don't take my Canola oil away, mama don't take my Canola oil away
Mama don't take my Canola oil away

Thanks Stacy, being a mod is difficult. This should help keep a person from having to wade through pages and pages to find a straight answer.

Tai;
Stacy asked that type of behavior to stop, in this thread, and you throw it in his face and do it again in that very thread ! Pretty rude and disrespectfull.

I respect your position as moderator. Dissent is unwelcome here.
