I had it dogged on one end. dogging it completely is a pain since it rolls anyway, and I have to flip it around to snap lines, etc. Not really worth getting it all secure for what takes about 20 minutes of rough hewing. The adze work after was stabilized entirely with my foot. And to think I'm a hockey player and not a soccer player eh? I also took to steadying pieces of firewood with my feet and splitting them. So in 10 years I'll have a bad back and fewer toes. Hopefully I will also be sitting in a finished cabin napping.

If I weren't trying to torque the damn waste out, the turning wouldn't be so bad. That I shall chock up to very seasoned wood and a thin bit =D

Thin bit and the fibers in the wood not wanting to come apart mostly. The axe was a little Walters with good geometry-- just very thin.

I've been cutting a few small ironwood trees that will have orientation like that. I heard ironwood( hophornbeam or Ostrya) makes good handles but the trees are so small that the center will be in the handle like that. I'm wondering if they will check but I'm letting them dry for a few months.
 
This particular one has fairly "straight" grain on the upper half of the handle, which was the big end I believe..
