Well gentlemen I have been spending a little more than average time around the bench grinder lately. Tonight I finished up (besides handles and sheath) a project I started forever ago. This is a knife I made from an old saw blade I found with some of my deceased grandpas tools. Originally I was making a Kephart style pocket bushcrafter knife then it sat because I couldnt heat treat. Built myself a redneck forge not to long ago, reground the knife into a mini bowie and did the HT... Put an edge on it and it passed all normal cutting tests but I snapped the tip when I was doing a tip test. Put it aside realizing I had left the steel too hard and it has sat for awhile. I have a couple blades I have made from junk I was testing to see if I got the HT right on them... and well that lead me to start attempting to chop a brick and mild steel and this little bowie with a broken tip did better than the rest so I gave it new life tonight... super stupid sharp edge on it, but its mighty thin. Anyways I have rambled enough here are some bad pics.

I love seeing people jumping in with both feet into knifemaking. Its amazing to me how many different ways a cat can be skinned so to speak. I like this knife, and the last thing I want to do is discourage you into giving up, but let me assure you that if you dont know exactly the type of steel your working with, there is NO way you will ever get the heat treat right. even if you do know, some steels are a lot more complex to treat and in most cases without the proper equipment still impossible. this is a big reason why a lot of knife makers hire there heat treating done. because if it isnt right. all of your time and effort is wasted, and the makers that do do there own, has or at least should have educated themselves in the craft let alone spent considerable amount of dough on equipment. keep it up. but starting out, dont try to do to much, it may frustrate you to the point of quitting.

I'll be venturing into this foray in a few months. Have to stop buying knives first and get some equipment. A coworker of mine gave me two huge horseshoe files. He said I talk about knives so much that I might as well make a few, even if they are crap. I have become obsessed with making them into a few blades because...well, I like to ruin perfectly good stuff in order to make other stuff that, as it turns out, is more broke that what I started with. I mean, I'm stupidly obsessed with these files.

Diazee nailed it. there is nothing easy or cost saving making knives out of files. I know a lot of people start out that way, and I got to think once they work with a decent piece of steel that doesn need worked before it can be worked, they gotta know they did it wrong to start with. Ive made some knives out of old raspes per customers orders. It usually results in a higher bill for them and a wish to rather have my ass kicked for me and I have the proper equipment to do it.

Both of you guys. iwouldhurtafly and TDhurl. if you guys are not in a hurry, I would be willing to send you guys a piece of forgiving steel to work with. when you get to the heat treat point, send it back and I will heat treat it. That way you can start out knowing what its like to work with decent materials that can percissionally be worked to achieve your exact goal. to know you got a good knife instead of taking a shot in the dark will put you way ahead of most people starting out. You might have to bear with me a little, I got a lot of stuff flying out of the shop right now but Id be happy to help you guys out if your willing to accept that it will be a back burner project.

Yesterday was great weather, around 65 degrees all day. Today is freezing. 42 degrees but with the chilling wind it feels like 20.

Got my large pack full up of boxes to mail off this morning, Its a mile and a half hike one way to the closest post office. just did 1.7 miles walking my daughter to school and coming back. Was going to ride the bike to the post office but figured i could use the miles walking for the "move your ass" point challenge.

Todd, i must say man thats an awesome offer you made right there as well, I love how awesome you guys are here, the way people like you, James, Daizee, crimson, and others are quick to jump up and help us out with info and advice. It is what makes this my home. I have learned so much from you guys in such a short amount of time, granted i have so much more to learn, but im grateful for all the time you guys take to help us newer guys out. Lots of people would be more worried about making sales on their own blades than encouraging others to learn to do it themselves, i have seen lots of other makers in other areas of this board and others literally try and discourage others trying by only pointing out the reasons they SHOULDNT try it, but you guys are very willing to help teach and even encourage others to give it a shot themselves. Im thankful for the way you guys are. Its awesome of you all honestly.

Yea i dont like the cold, or the real hot either LMAO we have a high of 50 today.

I like 65 in the mornings up to 75 in the afternoons. thats perfect weather, not too cold but still nice to sit by a fire and not so hot you sweat a gallon just walking outside.

Right now it's 29 outside, but the sun hasn't com up. Supposed to hit 63 today which will be nice for stripping. Knives that is. My LHB needs another hit, the SP8 is probably going to take 2, and I have a BK10, 16, and a new 7 that should be here today that I want to strip.

Why do companies put out folders with anything less than a 4 position pocket clip? Fancy stylish clips be damned! I want to carry my knife how I want to carry it and I'm sick of being forced to carry it differently.

Everybody should make at least one knife out of an old file, even if it sucks or they never intend to make another knife again. It's a rite of passage, like kissing a girl or getting punched in the nose for the first time.

Bonus points if it was the same girl, one right after the other.

It wasnt my first kiss but i remember back when i was 14 or 15, i asked this smoking hot senior, my buddies older sister, for a kiss on the cheek, she agreed and as she went to kiss my cheek i turned, grabbed her face and planted a good one right on her lips, she punched me right in the nose so damn hard my nose bled for an hour.... Still it was worth it LMAO

Well, thanks WW. I dont mind helping people at all, as a matter of fact, I quite enjoy being helpfull, just I have massive time restraints so sometimes I cant which some people misread it as being rude.

I got a idea, how about i kiss the girl, punch you in the nose and you can screw with the file! :D

Reminds me of The Sandlot when Squints pretended to drown to get mouth-to-mouth from the hot lifeguard.

Reminds me of the one about the young bull and the old bull.
A young bull and an old bull were standing on a hillside overlooking a pasture full of cows. The young bull says to the old bull "Hey, lets run down there and screw one of them cows." The old bull says "Nah. Lets walk down there, and screw 'em all."

Really liking how this pack is coming together. Thanks to Psyop and Murph for the recommendations.

Sounds like fun! I have made a bunch of "knives" out of all kinds of foraged materials, but not yet a file. 99% of them were absolute crap but I am the kind of person who just likes to find things out for himself. I know things would turn out better if I used an actual known knife steel, but seriously, out of all the material I have used to make blades and stuff I have paid 0 dollars for it all. Thats a lot of free practice I can put towards a known steel when I am ready. Plus I dont really go for beauty when I make something as you can see, but I want it just to cut well. I got the temper too hard on this one, but it seems the steel has handled it without any issues and I got some good edge holding out of it.

Good luck on making something out of those files! Just have fun with it.

Just couldn't resist posting this:
