After watching some well respected youtubers give rave reviews about the Ganzo FH11 I bought one.
It is a very nice knife very smooth addictive flipper action ! Various youtubers claim the steel has been analyzed and is real D2. I have doubts ! I can get a shaving sharp edge on it after a fair bit of effort, definitely harder to sharpen than my other knives , but it doesn't stay shaving sharp very long. ! After only a few minutes of very light use it will no longer shave hairs and will not cut paper smoothly.
Are my expectations too high? Is it crap steel or a bad heat treat or am I doing something wrong?

You've been had! Cut your losses and dispose of the knife. Then unsubscribe to those Youtubers channels!
Do research here before you buy a knife and save yourself from a lot of grief!

I see no reason why it would be real D2. Ganzo is infamous for stealing intellectual property from other knife manufacturers, so I'd not be at all surprised if they lied about what steel they were using.

Don't buy Ganzo, and you won't have those doubts

Well, I mean...you bought a Ganzo. This is kinda the sort of thing you have to expect.

OP, apologies if it seems like we're coming down hard on you about this one. Ganzo has a (IMO, well deserved) bad reputation among many, many knife enthusiasts.

If you're looking for some very nice, affordable blades with D2 steel, may I suggest you look at the Ontario Rat 1 & 2, the Steel Will Cutjack and Modus, the CIVIVI line from WE and some of the Bestech budget line.

There's D2 and then there's "Chinese D2". There are several factors involved, but two of the most relevant are 1. D2 is a steel specification that has many manufacturers and some flexibility allowed in it's formulation, even among the most reputable companies 2. Heat treatment is one of the most critical factors in knife steel performance. To date, the Chinese are not generally known for excelling at this - some would say, quite the opposite. Which is not to say that all Chinese knives are inferior - some are excellent.

To make a knife with D2 that cheap they would have to cut corners somewhere. I suspect the corner that was cut was the heat treat which is why it dulls instantly.

This sounds likely to me . The steel is hard because it takes ages to sharpen but loses its fine edge very quickly.,but stays "kinda sharp" for much longer. I am not too disappointed It cost £23.00 ( less than $30 ) Lesson learned I guess !

This forum doesn't support clones or Ganzo. Please don't support theft by supporting this factory. D2 or not. It's ChinaD2 which is sub par in comparison. K110 with 63hrc it's gonna be chippy and rust easily.

This one isn't a popular model but it is a clone.
And again this forum does t support ganzo or clones.

If a YouTuber is recommending clones, copies, homages, like ganzo they are not well respected at all.

The bright side is, as I pointed out, you can get some reputable blades in D2 for not much more! Two I forgot to mention are the ESEE Zancudo and Avispa, which give you D2 for around $40 and have very, very nice cutting geometry to boot!

Based upon your testimony I can't be sure that it's D2 but I am 100% sure it's a Ganzo.

Can you be 100% sure? What if Ganzo is so good at cloning that they have cloned their own knives? Can we be sure any Ganzo is a real Ganzo?

This particular Ganzo FH11is not ( I am led to believe ) a clone , but their first own design. If I am wrong I would like to know which knife it is a clone of.

It is a clone. I forget the name. But it 100% is a clone. As I said it's not as popular as it's sold on the scammers websites ie Ali express etc. And ganzo don't make 200$ knives. So it's clear as day they are not the original designer

But besides that the companies other knives are clones too. So its not supported regardless if they make one original design or not.

As I said these YouTubers are not to be trusted. They get free knives for review of these clones. They don't give a damn about clones and that is very bad for the rest of us.
