Gathering Contest...The $20 Survival Kit

I was talking with John and mulling over some ideas for the next Gathering. One of the things that we came up with was an offshoot of the "Dollar Store Survival" thread and it might be fun to do as a contest at the Gathering.

The idea is to put together a survival kit that costs no more than $20 total. The kits would be evaluated on how well they met the needs of the following areas:

Fire
Shelter
Signaling
First Aid
Tools
Repair
A container, bag, etc.

We would vote on the kit and contents and you must save receipts to prove that your kit did not exceed the $20 limit. Also, if you use only a portion of an item you purchased, say 4 of the 8 packs of matches from the Dollar Store, the cost would be prorated (ie: $.50, not the full $1 cost). You can also use items purchased at a second hand store or flea market, anywhere really, as long as you can produce a receipt. We could also exchange kits at the end.

Not only would this be fun to put together, John has kindly offered to provide a prize to the winner.......A JK Knife!!!!!!!

Curious if you Gathering go'ers would be interested in doing this.

Also, if you have never attended a Gathering in the past, you should really consider trying to make it. They are so much fun that, once you attend, you will count the days until the next one.

I started my shopping this morning. I do see a problem with doing this......what if I win? I guess I can always sell the knife.

Hi guys -

Sounds fun - and we have a lot of time to get the stuff together.

Great idea for a contest.

best regards -

A few updates on the contest....

Tax does not count towards the total, only the actual cost of the item.

If you choose to, you can modify or make accessories for any of the items you choose, such as making a tape & cardboard blade cover for a knife or modding a blade to make it more usable.

Oh, and it sounds like a certain Knifemaker has already been doing some productive hunting.......

Good luck in your search!

And going back out with the Boss tomorrow, while she looks for goodies for her new business, I`ll be tracking down "treasures."

I really cannot wait to see what everyone comes up with, this is shaping up to be pretty interesting! You know what they say, one man's trash is another man's survival kit!

Should have said that when I went to get the Dryer lint. I got looked at funny walking through the house with two handfulls of it.

This sounds interesting, look forward to pics from the event when it is time.

I`m hoping more guys will show up this time. So far the longest distance is from Kentucky, about 400 miles!

This contest is sweet! I really wish I was closer. Right now I'm about 9 hours away.

Why yes, I am a connoisseur of the lint as well and prefer the cottony goodness produced by a load of white towels. :)

Yea, that dryer lint is some good stuff. Get funny looks when I ask people to save it for me though.

I'll bet we end up with "all the usual suspects", but some new faces would be cool!

I wonder about that. I`ve seen every one of their names at the bottom of the forum page lurking, but only one has even posted in the Gathering Date thread.

I'd like to make it but there's a lot of unknowns right now. I'll try doing this and if I can't make it maybe I'll mail it to you. Gotta find the time.

This is tougher than I thought, partly because I want to keep most of the stuff I find! Maybe my wife is right, I am a packrat! I have found some items for my contest kit but also found a "like new" Columbia backpack for $.99 and an LL Bean Klean Canteen (if it was ever used, I can't tell) water bottle for $1.99. I needed to replace my EDC pack so the Jansport went in the closet and the Columbia is now in service (with my new bottle). Both are great and I now understand why the Klean Canteen is so popular, very heavy duty bottle compared to what I had been using.

Without giving away your ideas or finds, have any of you guys that plan on participating had any luck?
