Gathering Contest...The $20 Survival Kit

You guys have got to keep me up on this! I am 2000+ miles away and have to know what you come up with. I have one I carry every day here in the big sand box. I use a small plastic military chem warfare decon kit holder for mine, doubles as a cup and is completely waterproof. Please let me know what you come up with. P. S. when and where is the gathering? Joe

We sure will! We are going to meet in Illinois. We`ll be sure to post pics.

Why yes, I am a connoisseur of the lint as well and prefer the cottony goodness produced by a load of white towels. :)

You let me know if you need any. Our 16 dryers at work are always producing lint from white towels.

Now, I need to get myself out to the dollar stores, flea markets & thrift shops. Oh, and coax my boss for the day off, lol!

Never a bad thing to have! Thanks Zenful.

I thought I was done with mine. We were out in Ottawa today and I found some items that were better than what I had, for less money, so.......;)

Wherebouts in Illinois will the gathering be, and when? I vacation between Lansing Illinois and Ottawa Illinois.

I don't think we know yet. A lot of times we go to John's house which is Mokena which is like <1hr from Ottawa. We have talked about going to Utica for Starved Rock or Matthesien before. I always root for Utica since I live near Ottawa, but I really don't care. Someone else mentioned maybe a little farther south this time? I think maybe during the summer we should do one in a park or something. There is another thread about it, so maybe post in there.

Wherever we hold the Gathering we should make it an overnight so we can test our kits.

Jeff

I`m going to back out of the contest. I`ll still build a kit, but it won`t be eligible to win.

I have something that I picked up at the estate sale for the Shop that I think you might enjoy. Maybe that could be a "consolation prize".

I have had my kit done three times and now have finally decided it probablly wont officially be done till the day of the contest cause I keep coming across better deals, But my wife dosent think its a deal at all cause I keep buying something cheaper or better deal so she wants to know if I can return the last one I bought I usually say " baby I lost the reciept" but now she knows Im saving them for the contest:D

I was curious about something and asked John. I thought it only fair to share his response with everyone who is working on a kit as well....

Free items (giveaways, promotional items, etc.) may be included and do not count towards your total. This would not apply to "gifts" (i.e. you can't say that you included that nice new Buck 110 because your brother-in-law gave it to you) moreso items like a sports bottle from the local health club, etc.

Hi Sean -

Cool - I was wondering about that, as I had a couple of freebies that I wanted to include in my kit, but was not sure that was ok in the contest.

I have been having a lot of fun looking for cheapy-cheap items for my survival kit.

How many of you have been able to include a shovel in the kit? :D

best regards -

mqqn

No shovel for me yet but, as I would guess many of us have found, the kit seems to evolve with every passing flea market and dollar store. I can't wait for the garage sale season to rev up!

Good news on the freebies! And after much searching, I think I have the shelter portion of my kit wrapped up as of today.

Jeff

I have been watching this thread with great anticipation. I think the best thing about it is using what you can can find, don't worry about the absolute best or greatest. Survival is all about attitude, recognizing your assets and using them to the betterment of the group as a whole. I really can't stand the survival shows on TV where they pick off the weakest. Survival is a success when the entire group returns safely Thanks again for a great Idea, I am definately using this one with my scouts. Joe

How is everybody doing on their kits? I thought I was done, but I keep finding better deals and changing things.

Same here and I have even found a few things things for myself along the way that were too good to pass up. I picked up a new Vaughan half hatchet at Home Depot, $8.06, marked down from close to $25. A nice wool blanket at an estate sale for $2.00, that cool cane with the hiking shields, etc. I've also made a few things for my kit that I've never tried before, which has been a ton of fun!

Yeah, not that far at all. I have some good ideas(well at least I think so), but haven't got anything yet. I drive past a Dollar Store everyday I go to school, so maybe I'll remember sometime before I pass it.

Fellow Knuts, I want to clarify my previous quote. I was commenting from the point of view of a group of people in a tough situation where there is light at the end of a short tunnel. For examlpe a plane or boat wreck in a remote area. Or a group of very close comrads in arms that have to rely on each other in a life or death situation. I have read alot of threads on this site and understand the difference between situations like this and a SHTF scenario. I am the type of person that would share, but also understand who and what "sheeple" are and the issues involved with that scenario. I just want it understood that being prepared and being able to adapt with whatever you can find to survive is a lesson I want to teach my family and those I care about, so they can have the best possible chance available. Didn't mean to hijack this thread either.
2nd point. I found a combination compass, whistle, thermometer, flint for 2.99 last year, great combo unit. In my kit I am counting free gifts from companies and trade shows as no cost. I won't be able to come to the gathering, but still want to see your kits. Thanks again, Joe
