Gaucho knives and cuchillos criollos of South America

A great way to stay young, and keep in shape in the winter also!! Thanks for the adventure, Dan!!
Better get some knife content in here!! Made by Empire, in a place where it snows a lot, Winsted, Ct: now living where it is Green most of the year, Vancouver, BC; a Shapleigh-Diamond Edge !!Jade n Knife .jpg

This thread is awesome. I think it's time I get myself a real Argentine knife, not merely Argentine-inspired.

Any plans to get a fancy verijero CelloDan CelloDan ?

Gracias Christian ☺️

I have no plans .., for now 😉 but totally enjoy the pictures and history behind all of them 👍

I want to really use and “bond” with this one very especial Verijero 👍 … and do it as much as it is possible in my modern life.

I could have gone a lot fancier however I made the conscious decision to get to the very basics or essence of the pattern.

I stuck to a wooden handle ( I LOVE wood 😍 ) sourced from local trees and blade of simple steel.

The folks that build my native country with their sweat and blood were more likely to own the simpler models as opposed to the Estancieros, bosses and politicians.

At this stage in my journey exploring the knife patterns of my home country, it feels more authentic this way.

P.S: I also wowed to buy only two knives this year 😊 … the Verijero and the 2023 BF Knife… but we have all been there too 😇🤞

Edit: On second reading, and for the sake of total honesty the fancier ones were also beyond my means at present time.

My happiness with this knife derives from the fact that I found exactly what I was yearning to own 😊

Yes, the English certainly made some incredible styles for the world-wide market.
That picture is from "The Antique Bowie Knife Book" which shows a few other wonderful models meant for the South American and Mexican markets.
This particular knife shown bears the Chilean national emblem on the handle pommel.
Thanks for sharing the book title! Yes, the coat of arms of Chile was one of the things that caught my eye, being Chilean myself, though I think I only noticed after reading about the provenance of the knife. Very suitable for such a piece, since the motto featured in it is "Por la razón o la fuerza" ('By reason or by force').

Here's another similar knife I believe is featured in the same book - I believe this one is an Argentine piece made by Minervus from France (according to We Are Rogue, the Tumblr from which I took it):

Great pictures that represent the passion for our hobby. And I also thoroughly enjoyed your food preparation photos. Good food and a fine knife, what could be better. :)
Gracias Neal :)

Thank you Willie :)

We are visiting my parents in London ON with our daughters while they enjoy their March break from school/university.
We had not seen them in quite a long time.
I am feeling so very happy to be " back home" for a few days :)

My Mom approved of my new Verijero :thumbsup:. She used it to prepare a couple meals and get the patina going.
I grew up on these foods 😋!

There is no other feeling in the world that can compare to the one of being back home and having your Mother serve you the meals of your childhood were the main ingredient is LOVE 😍.

As I entered my 50's the age gap between us no longer seems as big. She was only 21 when I was born. At times, when reflecting on the brevity of life, I dread the day she may no longer be with us. It is that funny feeling, in the pit of your stomach, that you just want to push away but keeps coming.
I take that feeling and use it as a way to be more present in the here and now ... and enjoy each bite of the lovingly prepared food.

I am so blessed to still have her in my life !!!

My Mother's hands. I hugged her after taking this pic and she rested her silver haired head on my shoulder.
❤️you Mom :)

Gracias Charlie :)

I noticed the "yerbera" ( the joined containers used to hold the yerba and sugar used for mate infusions ) that my parents use on a daily basis.

I asked my Mom about it and she told me that it belonged to my Grandmother. She had it for decades and most likely that "yerbera" was in grandma's home when as a young child I went to visit her in Buenos Aires.
It holds a great sentimental value to my Mother.

I spent the afternoon going down the rabbit hole of searching and reading up anything I could find about cuchillos criollos :)
It was inevitable :)
