Gaucho knives and cuchillos criollos of South America

This Sorocabana was built by a traditional knife maker in South America named Alcebiades Bide. It has an 11" forged blade, and traditional horn handle with brass inserts. If my memory serves, South American maker Ivan Campos helped some of us order these many years ago on the forum.

I remember those Elliott. Your memory is correct, Ivan Campos facilitated the acquisition of the sorocabanas. They were offered for a very modest price too. I still kick myself for passing up the opportunity to grab one.

Ivan's been back on the forums again lately...he reached out to me not too long ago.

It is an interesting piece for certain, I don't recall how many of us took advantage of the offer.
 
Would love to see a tour of Argentina and some of the foods and drinks from local areas. Maybe some wine from the wine region, maybe Stefan Scmaulhaus would do a few Argentina knives and wine in a video clip. I got it!! An Argentinian asado, food on the table and everyone around the table…..or camp fire!! Using their verijero of gaucho knives tearing into the meat….and mate afterwards too.

I have never had better beef than I had in Argentina. Granted, it's been many years and the world spins on but that was a pretty distinct memory. The people are lovely, the food was amazing, and the traffic was terrifying.
 
I assume the beef is a lot different, maybe more game-y since the cattle are grass fed? I’ve really enjoyed this thread and the comments by everyone, especially our Argentinian friends. And the knives and the mate pics.

Yeap, I do remember those early wake up calls every morning coming from the tent next to mine.
" My tent is all wet 😫" could be heard in the early hours of the morning lol.
In your defense, that tent did not have a fly so heavy condensation would form inside ... however I still think you should have closed the tent door zipper that night we got rained on 🤫😊

Yes it is and I sure hope it continues to be different to this day.
Beef is a lot leaner and the concept of "marbling" was a foreign one to us until we came to the Northern part of the continent.

Therefore in order to obtain a tender piece of asado it needs to be cooked VERY slowly.
We were shocked when first arriving in here all those many years ago that steaks looked red or "raw" in the inside.

I did not know what a Sorocabana was. A quick search of BF and Ivan returned this beautiful image of one he shared back in 2013

I wonder if the sorocobana was the edged tool of choice for Brazilians during those armed encounters Domenech referred to between Spanish speaking and Portuguese speaking toughs.

Don't get me started. I'm married to a Sicilian girl from Brooklyn, (we're both native NYers), and I spent my formative years in the bars on McDougal & Bleecker Streets.

I lock the cutlery up every night and I still sleep with one eye open.

I just came back from the shed and found and old machete and she brought me her Cuban flag 🇨🇺

The visual comparison of the staged pic shocked me 😲
I promised to never argue with her again and that I will start putting sugar in my Mate 🧉and stop pretending I'm a tough gaucho 😁

My father in law has a big scar in his left hand after an accident while harvesting sugar cane in his youth with a machete🇨🇺
