GEC #15 Boys... Help me decide

I may even pick up a UV flashlight just for that trick.

And with a flashlight at 3am? You wouldn't need a glow-in-the-dark knife.

Imagine.

:p

WillieD, I love both my two-bladed #15s, and hope you like yours as well. I look forward to hearing your impressions.

I'm hoping to take a tour of GEC one day. My MIL lives only about 1/2hr away in Franklin. I'll post pics next week if I can with some of my other stuff from when I was a kid that I found.

Hey, congrats WillieD! You have chosen a fine knife!

For those who opted for the two-bladed version like myself, fellow member Thawk sent me a useful tip for opening the master blade (something I didn't clue into when I first got my #15) that I'd like to pass along. The pen blade can actually be pushed down a little deeper into the handle when closed which will expose the long pull of the master blade a bit more. With a little practice, you can push the spine of the pen blade down with the back of your thumbnail while digging in to the long pull and the action becomes quite fluid. Thanks again for the tip, Thawk!

This post was an "Aha moment" for me and it works perfectly. There is no cause for worry about the pen blocking the main pull if you will use this technique. Thanks for reposting it Brett!! Now, if I can find....

Interesting! I practiced that some today, and find that having finally intuited the muscle memory needed to access the main blade's long pull directly, first try with either hand, I can now simply do that (at a certain angle) more easily than trying to push down the pen blade.

But, whatever helps, helps-- and I'm glad if the above works well for some of you.

Meanwhile, I remain grateful for the sleek profile (and feel in-hand) the blade arrangement makes possible when the secondary pen is in use:

just remember, you started it
now your sense of humor has to BRANCH out a little

hehe

Hey now! I'm going to go out on a LIMB and suggest that you KNOT post if you can't STICK to the original thread content:D I keed!!! Knife should be here tomorrow:thumbup:

Knife showed a few days ago. Been super busy, so didn't have time to post. WOW! This thing is nice. Hasn't left my pocket. Maybe I'll get a chance to sharpen it today. Wasn't all that sharp when it showed. Fit and finish is great, but the bottom, back edge of the blades that sticks out from the handle when closed are a bit sharp. Is it OK to run a stone over them to round them off or will that mess up the way the blade stay open? This will not be my only GEC. I'm in love!!!. Hopefully I can get a few pics off this week.

All the GECs I've bought (ones that have been made 2011-present) have had that sharp edge that you mention. I figure it will wear off a bit over time from being the my pocket, but I have been tempted to do what you propose.

Hi,

I too think they could have 'broke' the edges of the blade spines just a teeny bit more. While crisp edges are a mark of excellent craftsmanship, I simply took a small extra fine slip stone and eased the edges a bit more to my personal liking. Ain't going to hurt anything if you do the same.

I too have been carrying my 2 blade Jack every day since I got it on Christmas Eve. Can't imagine anything else in my pocket anymore.

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered one like the one in the picture.

I used a stone on the edges of the blade spine of my 2012 Forum knife. It worked just fine.

I haven't been following this forum long but I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the pictures of knives that have brought back so many memories of growing up. I can almost pair the knife patterns to each of my family and friends who carried the various ones, which I don't doubt is the same experience many of you have had.

Anyway, I got all excited about purchasing a GEC #15 two-bladed boy's knife (I decided on ebony) because of all the comments and photos I've seen, but an now having a hard time finding one. Could one of tell me how GEC works? Do they typically keep remaking certain models as the stock gets bought up?

Thanks in advance for replies.

Larry

They will be releasing a run of the #15 Boy's Knife with a Clip Main Blade very soon. It will be released with the same handle materials as the #15 Boy's Knife Spear Blade Knives. They typically do not repeat a run of knives for a number of months, maybe a year or more. When they're gone, they're gone.

I am pondering if I waited too long to pounce on these 15's. I lucked out and snagged two of the barlows, thanks again Charlie. I haven't carried my ebony single blade 15 barlow, but I do have a Tribal Spear with ebony scales. The Tribal Spear's scales have held up to use pretty well, got a little bit darker. This was not daily use. I've been carrying a two blade yellow bone barlow from Charlies run, and it has gotten a little darker, your red bone 15 may darken over time.

I plan on getting one single blade, and one two blade, but I guess I better move soon. Seeing the SOLD OUT sign at too many of my haunts!
