GEC #35 Churchill Thread

More photo posted. Looks like the cougar clawed bone is being finished up...

This was the one I thought I would get, until I found out it had the standard Tidioute shield. I still may choose this one, but it would have been an easier choice with a more uncommon (from GEC) shield.

What I say to all cougar clawed bone is meh.
I thought it went really well with the #74 Stallion. The larger, wider covers were a better canvas for the random grooves in my opinion. I think they're okay on these 35's, but agree they aren't wowing me.

Won't opening the knife this way put a strain on the backspring?

Out of the 2-3 knives I have photographed the last 15 years I have never had one display any side affect from having all blades open; even at max angles. If you spring gives way to that, you had more than just a stress problem.

Yeah, that spring is strong enough to sit like that for a year and probably not have any I'll effects.

The only knife I've ever had break from having two blades open on the same spring was a Camillus Demo knife from the '60s. It belonged to my grandfather, so I was a bit bummed about it, but I learned afterwards that it was an issue several folks have had with those knives. I can't imagine it being a problem with anything from GEC, Case, etc.

I keep going back and forth on the Churchills. I really want to like them, and looking at the photos shared so far there's no arguing that they are good looking knives, but something about them just isn't doing it for me. The closest I've to come to putting my finger on it is that I think the #35 looks better with a spear point. It seems to me that the rounded, symmetrical handle clashes a bit with the angle on the spine of the clip point blade. I'm also still a bit confused by the choice to offset the shield rather than have it centered. The #35 Drover was a similar blade layout (big main blade on one end, small secondary "blade" on the other), and it's shield was centered. On the recent run of #13's, the Clerk and Whittler (blades on opposite ends) had centered shields, while the Speaker Jack and Whip (blades on only one end) had offset shields. The offset shield just seems like an odd choice on this knife.

I am still looking forward to seeing the Northfield variants. Maybe one of them will speak to me. :D
