GEC #35 Churchill Thread

Thanks for posting this side by side comparison, Dylan. I thought it looked that way in some of the other photos I'd seen, but that definitely confirms it -- that is one thick blade down there near the tang!!

I wonder why they didn't use a spacer (is that the right term?) like they did on the Drover. I mean, it still looks like they thinned it out pretty well once you get down to the edge, but it's incredible how fat that tang is! Wow!

Sorry I missed this, Barrett. I'm with you, I am not sure why they didn't use a spacer for the Main either, seems like thicker stock would make for more work, especially if they are trying to ensure a workable cutting edge. That being said, I do think they did a very fine job with the grind. The cutting edge is nice and thin and I expect no issues from it. I will just chalk it up to being a nice and very sturdily built knife.

Here are some glimpses of the Yellow Rose and the first of the Northfield trim. I didn't order any with the Northfield trim, though I am curious how the stag versions will turn out.

Personally, I like the thick stock. It’s what I always liked about the 57, too.

Those yellow roses look great!

As for the thickness of the stock-- the grind definitely gets it nice and thin behind the edge. The sturdy main blade is also complemented by the very thin secondary blade. I really like the combo.

Yes that Yellow Rose. I will be getting this one and the Stag only out of this run. GEC is closed this week, correct?

Looks to me that they opted to use a thicker blade stock for the main blade rather than a catch bit (I think that's the correct term) to allow space for the secondary blade on a single backspring. I am liking the look of these, anxious to see the stag. I was concerned the snap on these would be anemic but reports i am hearing here are encouraging.

I received my Ebony Churchill this weekend, and I really like it. It's pretty much the perfect size in hand but still slim enough in pocket. Mine has a medium pull with great snap on both blades. It reminds me a lot of the 79 Workhorse (blade shape notwithstanding), which is one of my favorite users.

Also, Mike wasn't kidding a few posts back about these getting a good bath at the factory - my knife came positively dripping with oil. You can see from the gunk on the tang, though, that it still needs a good flushing.

[Sorry for the lousy photos]

I broke down and ordered a maroon micarta. I don’t like the off center shield, but the single spring slenderness may be better served with micarta than bumpy stag... I may end up eating my words once the stages are released and getting one of those as well.

GEC being off this week really made me itch.

I’ll post pics when it arrives!

I like the old style longpull/full swedge on the spear points. I wonder if we’ll ever see that again.

I suspect you will see it on the Northfields. As was done on the 53 TK's, the Northfield Churchills will probably have ground swedges that are asymmetrical. Short on mark side, long on pile side. Short side ends before long pull, long side most of the distance back so the sheep/cope can pass. Add on the initial offset grind of the main blade and you gain an appreciation for the intricacies that are considered in these "production" knives.

I was referring to the swedge like the one on John’s workhorse above. On the newer spear points with long pulls, the swedge stops just before the long pull, whereas some of the older runs of the 79, 25, 72, 26 (and probably some others) have a swedge that runs the entire length of the long pull and terminates at the tang’s “shoulder”.

I like both styles, but variety is the spice of life!

As a collector I truly appreciate a well made knife and these certainly are however, I'm just not a fan of double sided knives I prefer a Jack style in a two blade. I am however very happy for all of you that bought and love these knives and have really enjoyed everyone's pictures.

I wasn't so struck on these at first, but I'm enamoured by the Cougar Claw version. Nice and textured and something like Queen's Winterbottom of yore.

Can't see myself getting one as this is one of those months when bills are all arriving together  Onerous:mad:

I would like to see pix of the Cougar Claw if anybody gets one.

Thanks, Will

Same for me (engine rebuild...) I'll let the Texas Rose go , hoping someday there will be a 38 TR...
