GEC #35 Churchill Thread

Well, for a pattern I initially wasn't all that jazzed about, I sure have started accumulating these Churchills!

The hummingbird acrylic I received doesn't have the "figure" in it that I really wanted, but even so, it is an absolute standout. It's really a dark green metal flake color that is just amazing when exposed to bright light.

Rick has already done a good job describing how sweet this version is!

I apologize. In one of my previous posts I showed some disrespect for the hummingbird acrylic handles. I just got my copy in the mail today and the iridescent glow of the handles is marvelous! It bowled me over when I took it out of the tube! The iridescence apparently doesn't photograph well. Thank you CK and thank you GEC.

My stag is on the way and should be here in a few days. Really looking forward to getting my hands on this one !

Wow, I just got my Banana Bone #35 and am so impressed. I wasn't too interested in the #35 Churchill, but I don't know why as now I realize it ticks so many boxes for me:

- Single spring
- Multi blade
- Thin
- Clip and sheepfoot (very utilitarian)
- Low sitting blades, for a comfortable grip
- Rounded and easy to carry
- Very thin blades that are sure to cut well
- Unique bone and even more unique shield
- No half stops (which I keep forgetting I like)

Mine doesn't have much green to be seen, and is a nice light yellow with a few black specks. The shield is great, though I can tell that they didn't cut out the area for it in the bone perfectly and had to add a teence of epoxy or something. The blades fit really well, I think there'll be a little rub marks but nothing too bad. I love how thin both blades are. The sheepfoot is like a razor blade, it's amazingly thin. Mine has pulls around a 5 I'd say, right around where the 15s I have currently are. I usually prefer a nail nick over a long pull, but with the medium pull and lack of half stops the long pull works fine. I wish they had left off the etch on this one, as it doesn't fit with the rest of the package. Actually, I think this unique knife deserved a unique etch. It also makes me want to find a slightly bigger version, maybe a 53 with the same configuration (if that exists).

Overall a really well made, nice looking, utilitarian, and downright fun knife. I'm very happy to have gotten one.

I received my green banana bone 35 today and couldn't be more pleased. I had mentioned earlier in the thread that I wasn't all that jazzed about this pattern but this knife has me smiling ear to ear. I know some will think the sheild is a bit corny and maybe it is, but I have really found that GEC doing these every once in a while would be a great thing. As someone mentioned before, the green banana bone 35 is one heck of a conversation starter. My little girls think it is super cool and they could normally care less about their dad's knives!

I really dig the acrylic, but the shield placement bugs me. I do get a kick out of the banana bones/shield, though! Beautiful knives, everyone, and congrats on the acquisitions!

Heck, I don't think you need to apologize, we're just shooting the breeze about knives, after all, smiley face.

You are absolutely correct, the hummingbird acrylic doesn't photograph very well at all. There are 2 tones of metallic green and then the brown/tan stripe (of which mine has very little). Rick's is way more "swirly" looking than mine. Just a very cool "old-school" look, that Will P noted, and that I think is just top notch.

We are going to need a cattle knife on this frame in the future for sure!

I am really disappointed that I couldn’t get a Bananna shield #35.

Yellow Rose of Texas. I like it but I am not a Texan and I would own one for nostalgia if I was a die hard Texan. If it did not have that etch, I would own two. Just throwing my own preference out there from a New Yorker.

I really enjoy having my green banana bone, I like to look at it and like the blade combo and was thinking of getting a cougar clawed bone to carry but I'm disappointed in the pull and snap so I guess I'll pass. Was gonna get an # 81 but heard they are light pull also so guess I'll see how the 78s are. Not crazy about the trend this year at gec of weakening the springs. Hopefully they'll find a happy medium to satisfy everyone on spring stiffness. I can live with a light pull as long as its really snappy like the #48 was this year but the #66 was very anemic. Hoping for a better year in 2018!

My Sambar Stag has arrived and now I know why many are liking this pattern .
Pretty happy with the stag on this one to  Fresh out of the tube.

^ Looks great to me! I ended up picking out a stag one last night. It’ll be my first GEC (and first production) purchase since the #35 forum knife. I sold mine due to the stuck punch issue and severe blade rub that I wasn’t thrilled about.

Seems like those issues have been solved.

Thanks and You should be very happy with your #35 Churchill. They have a very nice pull on these.

When I first got my Cougar it wasn't that snappy..but thorough wash out with soap, hot water and a toothbrush flushed out bits or rag, compound etc to a surprising extent. After drying and a drop of oil things improved dramatically, opening & closing just improves it still more. So much so that it got me into trouble....Recently round at a girlfriend's place and she had her brother there, who is OK but a massive bore...;) Listening on to him ad nauseam caused me to start idly opening&closing my Churchill under the table, the audible clicks both blades were making caused my girl to kick me and give me a more than hostile look:D So it must be working:cool: Maybe you could give your Green B a similar work-out?

Haha Will good story and I've been in situations like that too. I flushed the joints with mineral oil and worked the main quite a bit and it did improve but still pretty weak. I love the knife but long for a heavier pull and snap.
(Edit) I did get a few small metal flakes come out of the joint when I flushed it and I've never had metal come out before from any other knife I've flushed.

I was referring to the moderate pull on a single spring two bladed knife

Have the old men wearing bib overalls in the beautiful midwest ever tried "not" opening both blades at the same time halfway in a useless position ?
Might be the answer and a solution if indeed its a issue :)
