GEC #35 Churchill Thread

Noticing this same deficiency in the handles used for the 35’s, I immediately bought the AAPK SFO 35 in Rust Red jigged bone. It is not stamped Northfield, but it still fits the bill! The quality and bolsters and jigging sure indicate Northfield quality. And it really is a beautiful knife.
The hummingbird 35 lasted just a few days in my menagerie, and I passed it on. Sheer dullness!
I was shocked, chagrined, and bummed out to see someone had a green 35 and I didn’t. What the H*** is going on?
Do not feel too bad about it . There are only 12 of us with the green Pickle .:)

Hi, new to the forums and late to the party. As I live in Europe, it is not easy and/or cheap to get some of those sweet GECs over here. So when I heard my brother-in-law was staying in USA in august, I got to seize the opportunity to avoid costly shipping and...you know (cough) customs (cough). I was on the fence between 78 American Jack in cocobolo wood and 35 Churchill. Only two cover options left for Churchill were maroon micarta and cougar clawed bone. I do prefer wood and bone covers, but I have a plenty of spear blades on my SAKs and really no clippoints, so I went with Churchill. Stag and stag-like covers put me off, so micarta it was :-/ He got the knife for me, and it is waiting on me some 1300 km away, so it will be some time before I actualy have it in hand. In the meantime I decided to read this thread (I am about halfway through) and eventhough I was lukewarm to this pattern (stilll hoping to get my hands on some TC or NF barlow someday), reading your posts really did turn me on and I cannot wait. Although I was not happy with choice of the covers, now I see I only barely made it as micarta too is sold out. Cheers!

Welcome to the forum. I think you might like that Micarta Churchill.

This #35 Churchill came in today. After reading this thread I got curious about them so I decided to give it a try. Everything about it checks out ok. I was curious about the shield and as I thought, the shield is a one pin shield with the pin located in the middle of the shield with the two dots/impressions one on either end of the shield being cosmetic only. This might be a reason the shield is located so far forward on the cover. Had they centered the shield between the spring pin and the pin at the top of the cover at the well it would have required another hole in line with those two pins perhaps increasing the possibility of the cover cracking over time.

The centered vs. forward location of the shield was first discussed here at BF in 2011/2012 when the shield location was changed on the 53 Stockman illustrated in this picture of a 2007 #53 (Chocolate Brown bone) and a 2011 #53 (Bumble Bee bone). You can see in the picture how the possibility of a crack is more probable with a centered shield.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on why the shield is located so far forward on these 35s. I'll look for the discussion of this topic and post it later.

Thanks for posting your observations. I'm okay with the shield placement, especially if it reduces cracking.

The jigging on that Churchill looks fantastic, nice and deeply grooved.

Overall I like the knife very much. Of course, I haven't had a chance to give it a workout but that'll come soon enough. There is one thing I don't like about the knife:

When the blades are closed, the tangs ride proud and are very sharp, which makes them "pocket hole makers". I've already broken those sharp tang edges just a touch with a diamond file so they are smooth to the touch and won't cause a hole in my pocket.

In reply to solphilos,

GEC did a good job on the jigging. It is very much like Case's Bone Stag.

Thank you all for nice welcome, although I am pretty sure that my account will regret this registration dearly.

So you call this sanatory for knife-nuts the Porch?

Fortunately it will not be my first GEC. Two years ago I managed to acquire second hand #735115 Cody scout in (once) OD green linen micarta. And of course, while I was at it, I did not order only Churchill. I am also getting obligatory #71 bullnose in natural canvas micarta.
