GEC 38 English Whittler 2021

Knife only carve. This knife is legit in form and function.

Amazing skills Jiki, always enjoy seeing your art:thumbsup:

I received my Bloodwood #38 EW today, and while it's a beautiful example with great shield fitment and chatoyance from the wood, I too have that slightly proud splitback on mine. It doesn't affect function, and truthfully you have to look VERY closely at it to see it, but it is there.

I have it on mine, also. I can’t help but to imagine there is a burr that forms on that spacer during hafting. Then, when we work the blade open and closed, the dual springs lift it out.

Do you think they all got the same burr? Look in the well, I think they might be pinned a hair too tight causing the well side of the spring to roll together and pinch.

Curious how many people are getting samples with a proud splitback? I have have flushed mine hoping it would seat but no change. Haven't sanded yet...

It looks like GEC sanded the springs and liners with the primary blade open....... My whittler wedge is dead flush in the aforementioned condition...... When I close the primary blade the wedge presents itself; (1) either because of play on the main spring pin, or, as I believe (2) the springs flex slightly near the secondaries when the main is closed exposing the wedge.... Either way it is is a kindergarten fix with a little bit of fine sandpaper......

well I’d have to imagine they all got various degrees of the same burr. You might also be onto something with the pinning- I could see that having an effect.

small beans for me, personally... This particular knife is one sophisticated lady.

I cannot disagree. I really love this knife, and I am grateful that other than that slightly proud tip, the finish on my example is flawless in all other respects. This beats out the last two or three GECs I've gotten from drops this year and second half of last year. I'm ultimately very pleased with it.

I’m out of town, but... My bloodwood was delivered, and I just got a notice that my jigged bone has shipped! Starting to get very excited here!

After careful evaluation have decided to rate the main on the new 38s a 6 (no halfstop). The tapered split liner is minutely proud on both of my new 38s with the blades closed, with the main open it can't be felt. Shield / shield on the orange jigged bone is not my favorite. Black camel bone has the best fit / finish, zero proud split, a much longer clip main blade and a 5 pull. Lick Creek versions don't have a halfstop on the secondary, the others have halfstops on both secondaries with a nice 4 pull, plenty for a small blade. Lick Creeks have steel liners, an improvement over brass IMO, and the secondary spey is thin and sharp, as it should be. Hope you enjoy the pics!

Great insight and comparison shots of all the multi-bladed 38s.

After careful consideration, I'd rate Chief's review a 6.
The 38 main pull on both my examples is stout- a guillotine fit for mice.
7 at the very least but I'd say an 8, personally.
one more and it gets uncomfortable, and a 10 for me is so strong it's not pleasant to open anymore because of how hard it snaps into positions.
