Gec #38 whittler

My #38 is developing quite the patina after about 2 months of every day carry:

Looks good, man!

I've used the green one quite a bit, since I got it, the farmer is so pretty I can't bring myself to mess it up yet. And I just got the middle one, an American whittler. It has it all steel, rat tail bolsters, peachseed chestnut, split back whittler made buy GEC! They did a great job on these knives.

The intricacies of the design and the tight tolerance in terms of blade spacing are incredible on the #38! A must have folder in my view. Exquisite work/craftsmanship by GEC on these. Three beauties you got there Jschenk. Especially nice catch on the American Whittler-those are very hard to come by. Lloyd

Best three blade knife available at the moment in my opinion.

Fine picture JSCHENK , showing three different scales, three shields and two frame variations. I'd like GEC to do their own Clip or Wharncliffe with Pen secondary on single-spring in the future.

Regards, Will

I would love to see GEC make their version of a seahorse whittler on this #38 frame. Short and thick wharncliffe primary, pen and coping on the other side, and all out of 1095. Maybe one day

The gepetto whittler it's pretty similar right?

My 38 in kryptonite green is the only knife in my collection I can't bring myself to carry it's a sad state of affairs, it's just to perfect. :(

The 38 whittles look very interesting, I hope I would be able to have one sometimes
Great photos in this thread.
Mike

I'm sure glad this thread is still hanging around because I find the 38 Whittler just about the perfect all purpose knife and with 3 blades, still pocket friendly.
I've posted this picture before but I like to share it whenever possible along with other member's photos. Can't seem to get enough of these knives.

where did people get those neptune acrylic ones? I never saw them on any of the regular suppliers websites...

I haven't checked around to see the availability, but you may see one on the Exchange here, or maybe on an auction site. I was waiting for them as GEC was producing them, and when they went public, I pounced.

The Geppetto is shorter, 3-1/2" instead of the 4" sea horse whittler, even though some of the the Geppetto's had a wharencliffe primary the sea horse comes more to a point and is considerably thicker.

If only they would make the Model #38 Grinling Whittler in stainless steel. I think it's only the Tidioute and Northfield models in 1095 carbon steel. If they ever make Northfield knives SS, I would buy them all! Hint, Hint.

I absolutely love my Grinling Whittler. It is my favorite Gec. During my visit to Gec William showed me it. I picked up an 09 that day in buffalo horn. Lost it three days later. I was sick. I called up to Gec a few days later and bought the 38 in blood red bone. Chris shipped it right out. My new Ebony 83 showed up a few days ago and I have been carrying it but it is not the 38. So the 38 will probably make its way back into my pocket. I have since replaced the 09 also.

Welcome to BF :D

I agree, there are some patterns that I would like to have in SS so that I can take them fishing and what not without having to feel obligated to do maintenance on them, the 38 however is a more of edc knife for me and my edc tasks dont require SS. I think they should do a small run of all the patterns in SS though.
