GEC #48 Dogleg Jack

The last of the Northfields I ordered showed up yesterday. I got one Buckeye Trapper in the lot. It is very similar to the Western Trapper; the difference being that it has a straight (as opposed to the modified/bent) spey blade with a long pull, in front of the clip. As far as GEC's Trapper pattern goes, I have to admit I prefer the slim muskrat clip/spey version the best because the blade profiles are closer to the handle, making it more comfortable while using the spey blade. I am glad they went with long pulls on both blades in this version.

I'm not sure why they didn't make a run of single blades back when they made the Western Trappers because it sure seems that the single blade models are a lot more popular or at least more desireable. I prefer them at least, and they are the ones that sold out first.

It's a pity that they made so few of these in the Northfield edition. I heard that of the Tortoise shell there were 10 single and 11 double. The Cardinal Reds were 17 single and 16 double. If you got one, consider yourself lucky!

I love the dogleg, I think it's one of the slickest patterns GEC offers both in hand and pocket.

My number one request from GEC would be this pattern in african blackwood with long-pull clip and caplifter.

I own a GEC 48 in jigged bone and 1095 I purchased it in 2011 I believe (first year it was made, maybe 2012) and it has one of the best snaps for a slip joint I have ever had, its very well made, the only downfall is that the blade is thin, it is a nice length but not much good for anything but cutting veggies or fruits

Thanks for the information. I have a #48 (the new ones) in stag, ebony, and red jigged in the single clip (dogleg jack) on order. I really like single blade clip knives and this looked like a winner for me. Thanks again. I will post a review when they arrive.

Looks like you were not happy with it...if it's the one I got. I'll let you know when it shows up.

I just got one of the single blade maroon micarta 48's and I am liking it a lot.
Very good sized blade with a nice thin profile.
As usual the fit and finish is outstanding and the pull is real nice at about a 5.

I haven't cut anything yet but it looks like it should be a good slicer.

I wouldn't write the blade off that much. Ok the stock is relatively thin but the narrowness of the blade from spine to edge makes for a relatively good taper on the primary grind. Not for prizing doors off but fine for EDC pocket knife tasks I've found:)

Here's my group of the new run #48s. Of these, I think the single blade versions are great. I'm not sure which I prefer more, the simple Tidioutes or the fancier Northfields. Great size blade and these don't have a strong pull so they're pinchable, especially once you get some patina going. On the trappers though, I think I prefer the Northfield versions. I like the look of the long pull spey on these. And I love the stag on the 2 blade one as well.

I was finally able to track down a single blade in Tortoise Shell! Man that one was harder to find than most Charlows. :)

Wow, nice! I'm not buying any new knives right now, so I have to just enjoy pics of the new 48's....like this one.

Thank you for the compliment! There is never a shortage of beautiful knives and photos here

Lots of nice examples in this thread. Draggat the red jig bone is really nice. You rally captured the color in that pic.
I was very fortunate to score one of the single blade tortise shell acrylics. The depth of the acrylic is amazing. Pics will never do this handle material justice. The pull on mine is very mellow with a nice strong snap. Also I have thank my friend Jake for bringing this one to my attention. Thanks Buddy! :D

Here's a sub par pic. I'll have to get some better ones when I'm feeling better.

draggat showed me some out-of-the-way places to look for a #48 Dogleg Jack in tortoise acrylic. I was really hoping for the single-blade jack version, but after a lot of turning-over-stones found a two-blade Trapper in tortoise so I jumped on it! I continued to search, halfheartedly, then stumbled upon a dealer who had just received a single-blade Dogleg Jack! I couldn't believe my luck and pounced again. I really didn't intend to end up with both versions, that was just the order of how things played out and my not wanting to miss out entirely on Tortoise.

Now I have one for my pocket and one for display. :) Thanks draggat! The tortoise is very translucent and has great depth.

In general I find Trappers have the best action. There is something about those long springs that give perfect walk and talk.

Mr.Badexample - thanks for the compliments! I've finally gotten a little better at taking pics.... only took a few years. :o

Robb, the color on yours looks really outstanding. I am glad I was able to help you get these.... I'd say they were a little harder to find than the TC Barlows. At least they didn't get the same kind of press or I'd never have gotten one myself! Im glad to see that it looks like at least half of these went to forum members.

Update after a few weeks - I'm still really digging my 48 after lots of pocket and hand time. It's such a pleasure t hold and use! This is one of those rare ones that just seems to have that certain something about it. I find it in my hand a lot when I'm just watching TV.

Here it is again with its close cousin.
