GEC #56 Dogleg Jack Spear

In my pocket for the first time today. Don't know how I lived so long without a secondary pen blade on my EDC.

Fit and finish is very nice. Blades were super sharp. Pull is stiff but manageable -- quite a change from years of using a hole or studs to pop a blade open though....

Got mine today. I am impressed and aw'ed for the quality. Its pretty much like willgoy said, but mine has just few lighter shades. Generally dark and pretty, but its not jetblack as my BF2010 forum knife, still awesome.

Jared, what you done to your knife impressed me. I really prefer satin finished blades over mirror. If I would live in the states, I would send whole bunch of my knives to you so you could make 'em satin finished :D

Thanks Jani, and I would be happy to do it for you any time.

Yes, that satin finish looks high-professional! Still like this one with shine though.

I carried mine today and thought I'd throw up a pic since it's a little different. I'm not a big fan of blade etching so I usually polish off any etching if I know it will be a user. I gave this one a nice satin finish and did the bolsters while I was at it. Mine has a little lighter wood and the two pins are over sunk as well but I really like it over all. I have been impressed with all the GEC knives I have so far.

This finish turns a great looking knife into one that is simply stunning! There is something about the satin finish that takes it to a whole new level!

Best I could do guys. Cool knife, but would you pay over a hundred bucks for It? I'd really like to know.

I'm not alone from reading the thread earlier. It may not be the best stag folks have ever seen, but yes, I'd pay over a hundred for that knife. It may not be as knarly or popcorny as some, but it is pretty well matched front to back and is fitted and hafted well. Yep, I'd pay a hundred + for it.

Greg, as always your photos are great.

I haven't bought a knife in a good while so I figured I would review my latest and greatest.Sorry, no pictures but I picked up a Tidioute in ebony with the clip blade. You've all seen 'em.
First I'll talk about the packaging. I don't think I've ever enjoyed opening a knife as much as this befor. I lile the tube with the hand written model number on the top. good quality cosmoline paper and a nice certificate with the serial number on it. A nice touch considering I ordered a non serialized knife. I asked my preferred vendor to pick me out a nice dark one because he told me the ebony comes lighter in these. When I opened the package there was a note saying "best one serialized" which added to my opening delight. Number 5 of 20.
As for the knife, using a scale of one to five, here goes...

Blades: 5 rating. Grinds are nice and straight with no waviness. Nice swedges and smooth walk and talk.Nice etches. I know a lot of you guys don't like the etches, but I think its more traditional and these aren't overdone. I also like the numbering system annd the stamps are nice too.
Scales: 4 3/4 rating. just because they aren't black. The spun rivets are nice and flush and no gaps anywhere. The wood grain is growing on me as it is a nice light grain. Haft side is pretty black.
Construction: 5 rating. No gaps anywhere. No blade play and walk and talk is smooooooth, as mentioned above. pinned shield, another:thumbup:.Bothe blades are dead center of their liners.
In my opinion GEC has upped the bar on production knives just from my experience with this one knife. Actually three, because two of my work buddies have the barlow and small EO.
No doubt, you guys made the right choice in the 2011 knife choice.

Once I get my camera situation and photo storage back I will be able to take some shots, sorry.

I agree, opening those GEC tubes is exciting: the waxed paper, machine smell, certificate and then the knife itself!
I've been very pleased with my Dogleg Spear in Ebony, really well made knife and the right size for me. True the Ebony could've been blacker-but it comes in many shades and some of the very black stuff you see on new knives is often Blackwood not Ebony. It will age very well i'm sure. I'd like to get the bone version of the Northfield Spear but funds are hard pressed just now.

I also agree that GEC quality still continues to climb, no mean feat either. Got a 33 Conductor this week in Tortoiseshell, it's simply amazing, flawless and so compact yet the Clip blade is no fussy little nonsense at all.

Any of the ebony's 56 spear still around? Get the feeling that they've all got owners now.

I got #07 last week, and it was apparently the last he had. I might have gotten the last one. It's a jewel of a knife. Probably the nicest factory made knife I've handled.

I have the spear in ebony, and the clip in burnt stag and snakewood, my user. I find the CaseBose Dogleg to be a bigger, more substantial, heavier knife. The size difference is only 1/4", but it is significant. I love them all.
I went and signed up a photobucket account just for this, the pics aren't very good, but its a technological leap for me, and all by myself, the Mrs. is away in Whodat for the week!

Nice pics robbous. I'm still searching for one of those Case/Bose Doglegs.

Here's my #56 Ebonys.

I'm thinking about ordering a dogleg but I'm wondering if I'll pocket carry it. Can someone provide the weight of an ebony or bone 56 dogleg?

Edit: Got the weight by private message. Thank you! I'm gonna grab one in bone or ebony... decisions...

Just received one in ebony, man o man its a nice knife. I also have one in frontier bone, my leanings are always with wood.

I decided on the ebony but the amber bone was also speaking to me. ...I wish the amber bone was available on a Northfield calf roper... The Northfield ebony dogleg seems to have come and gone so I ended up ordering the older Tidioute version in ebony. The clip point blade will give me a bit more variety since my Case/Bose dogleg has a spear main blade. It should also be much lighter in weight than the Case/Bose dogleg. I'm looking forward to using it when it arrives.

Seems appropriate to bump this thread right about now. :)

I don't usually like wharncliffe blades, but I find them irresistible in the #56 pattern. Several #56s have gone through my hands, but this is the only one I have left. I feel this pattern longs to be a single-bladed wharncliffe ;). I'd love to try a weaver jack some day. I suspect I'll end up with a couple of the wharncliffes and spears coming out of Pennsylvania this week and next. :D

Can't wait to see pics from everyone.

MCar MCar Could that be a 55 in your picture ?
I get the 56 & 55 mixed up. I believe the only difference is one is the reverse dogleg, but whic one dogs which way confuses me.
I to am excited about the run of 56s and hope to get a single spear.
