GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

What do you think of my uneven color smooth bone handles?? Will they get better with use??

In a word, yes:)

I'm surprised they have described them as that, to me they look closer to the Autumn Gold but there we are. You'll find the bone will darken and develop some interesting hues (even blues and greens!) with time. That coupled with the patina'd steel bolsters is all good in my book.

Also, often when you look back at the GEC produced knives a more unusal varient of the pattern can grab people's attention.

I'll use my TC Barlow as an example. This one is the Amber bone and was tacked on to the end of a run. Little interest when they first came out, understandable as they didn't look much. Now, with a bit of age people quite like them;)

I already posted this pic elsewhere, but not in this thread yet. Might as well get some mileage out of it. :)

Just beautiful. Mike, I know you do this for a living and all, but thank you for making such a lovely creation come to life, and of course thanks to the staff at GEC for such a flawless execution.

That's amazing. I didn't ask for a different shade of autumn - and I don't know if it was intentional - but they are my new favorite!!

Just beautiful. I can't honestly say I could ever be convinced to use that.

So far it has only been used as a photographic subject and to slice up some post it notes to test the sharpness. :(

I forgot to mention how SHARP both blades were right out of the tube. I also recently acquired a new modern folder from a maker with a reputation for sharp blades, and this 77 was every bit as sharp. I know sometimes people (including me) have been less than satisfied with GEC's factory sharpness, but that's not a problem here.

Right now I have it wrapped up in a microfiber cloth in my knife drawer to make sure none of the other knives bump into it. But this one is just such an ideal combo of blade shapes and sizes that I think I'll eventually have to open a letter with it or something. ;)

Autumn Gold for the win. These are excellent SFO's that Mike & GEC should be VERY proud of. I am very pleased with mine. Flawless fit/finish and absolutely beautiful scales. Also, wanted to mention mine came VERY sharp as well. I foolishly opened the coping blade after the main when I set up for this pic & wound up with a real nice cut right across my index finger knuckle due to my inattention:

Love the tower Harry! I stopped by to admire it's contents more than a few times. :D

Thank you very much Brett !!!! Good to see that you picked up one of those Smooth Ivory Bones too. I expect that you are really pleased with yours too. I think I like your brown slip with it better than the black.

Harry, I am pleased with the ivory 77. It's a great knife. I think it goes well with the brown slip as well, but even better with squash, broccoli, baked potato, coconut shrimp, and steak. :D:thumbup:

Eye popping photo John! Really shows off the knife and the depth of the handle.

John,

Best AG handles I have seen. Like Mort said wonderful photo. The amber, yellow, honey, gold, brown blend of colors are impressive! GEC and Mike really produced a perfect specimen in the good looking department on this one. Thanks, Lloyd

Also been posted before is my humble attempt to show off my SAGB handle.

The afternoon sun makes the handle a little lighter but shows off the fire in the handle.

Very NICE AG 2b photos and examples CBR and Mort! Those are keepers for sure. Thanks for sharing and making me envious, Lloyd

Fascinating photos everyone! Wow those AG smooth bone scales are perhaps the most fascinating of any scales I've seen GEC put out. I've said it before and will say it again, this run of 77 Barlows is the finest quality knives I've ever seen from GEC - outstanding!

My sawcut red 2-blade spear has knocked all others out of the right front pocket since it arrived.

Sean,

It's always been this dark, it's not as black as Gabon, but it's darker than other African Blackwoods.

AB varies from a very, very dark brown to jet-black. My spey TC Barlow is as black as black can be and it's a beauty. My sheepfoot 77 Barlow at a glance looks black in most lighting but when examined in direct sunlight you can see a brownish hue in it.
