GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

This is what I have heard also, in regards to camel bone versus cattle bone. I do not mind variations in dye either, I just have to expect that there will be some examples that I like and some that I do not. In the case of the Elderberry I got, it wasn't my cup of tea, so to speak. Which is pretty much what I was expecting. My pictures of it did a pretty decent job of capturing its true hues, and the picture below is precisely what came to mind...

:D:D:D Bahaha.
I love this comment/picture so much. There's a Bark River collector with a YouTube channel called "Pink G10." A significant number of his blades are pink G10 with black liners. He just embraced the color and it's kind of become his thing. I think it rubbed off on me because I quite like the camel bone 77s this run. But, I have to agree with you, Pàdruig, it's PINK! :D I just embrace it.

Aesthetically, I really like it. It demonstrates an attention to detail that often can get overlooked in production/factory knives. When I look at it, it speaks towards the skill of the cutler and the manner by which the blade was milled.

That being said, I only have a few knives with match strike pulls, the 77s and a 56. The pull on the 56 almost feels shallow, I find myself not getting as much of a purchase with my nail as I would like to and I kind of attribute that to the match strike. The 77s though are different and I can't really understand why. Visibly, there doesn't seem to be much difference, but I can certainly pull on the 77 blades with a lot more certainty.[/QUOT

Maybe I'll start referring to the 2018 #77 Elderberry barlow as the "Operation Petticoat" barlow. :D (in an endearing way....man, I love that movie:thumbsup:)

Speaking of red (or pink) bone, I recall a small run of "smooth red bone" GEC produced early on - 2006 or '07, a small run of maybe 20 - that became coveted by collectors and very difficult to find. Anyway, in time there was a ground swell of enthusiasm for the #77 Elderberry and will have the same impact for collectors as the smooth red bone...

No way! This picture has dredged up some nice memories, I watched that movie so many times. A fitting name for your 77, I must say. :D I can't think of a better one.

I like both matchstrike and plain on long pulls. It's nice to get variety.
What I really dislike are matchstrike crescent nicks. Maybe it's because I see them so much on cheap knives, and they make no sense to me from a match-striking perspective. ;)

I'm enjoying seeing all the variety in covers and opinions. I'm even enjoying the wheeling and dealing as everyone tries to get the knife they prefer. I don't mean the flipping, I mean the folks managing to get the one they really wanted due to fair trading. Every knife has a story.

I thought it was time to update the photo of my Northfield 77 Barlow tower . A couple that were in the 2 year old photo are now residing in Tennessee with one of my good friends in his bigger collection . These are Oldest to Newest from bottom up .

Very nice Sir. You're going to need a bigger tower real soon (or twin tower).

My first choice was a tie between red sawcut and ironwood. I ended up with an elderberry.
Crazy enough I really like the reddish pink of mine, like, alot!
Havent carried it yet as I use a different type of knife at work, but cannot wait to. She is sharpened and ready to go.

Thank you very much for the kind words Tim !!! I do not expect that I will be getting another #77 Barlow for at least a year unless someone wants to send me one at dealer prices , not Flipper Prices .

Huge thanks go out to Postlapsaria Postlapsaria for helping me out, and being kind enough to trade a Micarta 77 from this new run to me. The porch is truly a wonderful place.

To say that I’m chuffed would be an understatement. My previous 2-blade Micarta 77, with the spearpoint main, was sort of a grail knife for me when it first came out. At the time, it was the closest knife I’d ever seen, to my own personal idea of the perfect jack knife, and it has served me faithfully for years now.

But my preferences have changed a bit over the last couple years. Where I was once a devoted spear point lover, I’ve really come to love the clip point as of late, mainly because of the last run of pinchable clip 77 barlows. I snatched up a couple of those pinchable clips, but unfortunately, the single layer knife was a bit too thin for my very long fingers. There just wasn’t enough grip to be comfortable and secure for long days of hard work.

So when the details of this new run were announced, I was overjoyed. I could get the clip blade I loved so much, in almost exactly the same configuration as my old beloved Barlow. I didn’t have any luck on the lottery, but fortunately for me, the aftermarket trading on Bladeforums for these barlows has been downright feverish.

In a word, this new run is simply marvelous. While I might have a preference for my spear point’s canvas Micarta covers, the new linen Micarta is much nicer than I expected. Nicer looking I would say, and still plenty durable enough for a knife of this kind. I look forward to seeing how it ages over the years.

Where my spear point knife is probably a good 7 or 7.5 on the pull, this new knife’s pull is just about perfect for me. Still snappy, but much easier and safer to open. And while the secondary feels a bit sluggish right now, I’m confident that it will be just fine after I give the joint a good flush tomorrow.

Overall, I’m happy beyond reason. I prefer the brushed finish on my old knife’s bolsters, as I find that it befits Micarta better than a more polished appearance, but that is something I can easily change on my own. So here it is. Probably the closest I will ever get to my own personal idea of the perfect jack knife. Thank you so much Mike and GEC, for once again redefining my concept of the ultimate jack.

Wow. These photos are making me miss that knife a bit. BUT, I am super pumped to have a beautiful single blade to accompany my new sawcut! Thanks, Buzz!

Just like Harry Old Engineer Old Engineer said, it's great to see you around Al!! Your Red Sawcut definitely has developed some character since we started using them!:thumbsup: Mine has some patina but your Sawcut has changed more! I believe you have used yours more than Harry or I have! :D

Thanks, Ron! Yeah, I've used it quite a bit around here on the farm. That is such a good pic of yours!!

Yeah. It hurt to let that Copperhead go. It’s a fantastic knife. I love that it was so pinchable. But it made sense to me, to shoot for a 2-blade model that I’d carry, versus one that just didn’t fit my freakishly long hand. Better to get it into another collector’s mitts. I should have been a piano player.

Lovely knife in every way. I am very thankful for it to join it's Bone Micarta brother from the last run.

One of my biggest regrets is about a year and a half ago trading my single spear Canvas Micarta #77. I sure do miss that beautiful user and don't count on seeing another as readily available as when I picked it up.

Well, I had one for about 24 hours. It's headed to a new home. About the time it gets there I should have the red sawcut I traded for. I will say this though, if I actually had the Micarta in hand before we came to an agreement to trade, I probably would have kept it. I liked it a lot better once I saw it in person!!

I had a similar experience! Lol Probably my favorite micarta to date and I usually do not care for it much
