GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Well I feel extremely fortunate to have successfully reserved one. Don't care which cover I get. This will be my first GEC barlow knife and I expect it will be hard to displace from my pocket for many months.

With 4 variations there should be 125 of each making it a total of 500, I think those numbers usually vary by plus or minus 10-20

For some strange reason, red anything from GEC always seems to run short. Red must be a very difficult dye to take to bone. I’m betting on less than 100 of the red, to be made up for with extra micarta.

I don’t have any GEC knives in Micarta. I always choose wood or bone, but always find myself staring at those micarta work knives you fellers post from time to time. I’m not saying micarta is my first choice for this run, but I wouldn’t be disappointed if it’s what I end up with. I think AB is my first choice, but all the others are very close 2nd;).

i was at the bar at the time when I received the text. Site server crashed twice but hey single blade spear. win some lose some as Mike said once during a conversation we had on the phone.

I’m new to the CK special factory orders...What exactly does the “sure” “standby” commitment level mean?

I eventually ended up with every one of the four from the last run. Had to pay secondary prices to get them, but that was my choice. Now I’m just down to the red saw cut. While I would have been have happy with any for my only one I really do like the saw cut, so I’m hoping I can land one of those two options.

Will it really be this red? Or more like below?

I don't assume with GEC. It's likely the one below, blood red, but it's not specified. I wouldn't be surprised if Mike decides to have more distinction between runs and uses some other type of red from GEC. Mike is usually accurate in his description and if it was blood red saw cut it would state blood red and not just red. I know he's been busy and maybe that's why his description doesn't state which red. It's a safe bet it's blood red, but until Mike clarifies or GEC posts production pics it could be any red. I for one wouldn't mind a different type of red from the older run. I like blood red... I just don't care for repeats.. it confuses me lol. The cranberry red on the last TC might be interesting.

Three of the cover options seem to be as guaranteed as you can get as far as aesthetics go. The red sawcut and linen micarta were done just last year on the 77. The AB should be........ black. The amber sawcut is the wildcard this year, since you never know what you’re going to get with it. It could end up being the dark horse of this year’s run.

Here’s the Copperhead Sawcut from a couple years ago, which could end up being very similar.

There's been three "red" 77 Barlow's.. old red, blood red, and red. Excluding elderberry and jigged blood red.

GEC's red they call Hemlock Green would be killer, but I'm guessing we will end up with blood red again.

See, that red is fantastic. I'm not crazy about the candy red like the picture I posted, but I wouldn't kick it outa bed either its just not my thing.
That lined micarta is great. I like the canvas on my Ramsfoot but until it wears in and gets some hand oil on it its a little rough and dry, so I'd prefer it be like the one you posted. Both fine examples.

Really I don't think there's a bad choice, just one I'd rather have over the other in all four options, but I'll take any and smile quite honestly.

^ “Excluding Elderberry...” yeah, Elderberry was most certainly NOT red! :) The like/hate of that color was probably more divisive than the 93 Jigged NF Ram Shield placement. There was a precedent set on the nice 78 Elderberry bone color too, so Jolly Rancher strawberry really threw folks for a loop.

All that said, I ended up with one and planned to dye it until it grew on me. Nice to have a splash of color in the mix.

I’m torn on these new 77 covers. Black covers on a Barlow are so dang classy, but sawcut is awesome. I love the way Mike set it up this time with choices. Almost hope a choice or 2 gets made for me! Almost.

There was 1 red and 99 pink o_O.

I'm torn on the cover options too. I think I'm hoping to end up with an African Blackwood. 2019 is turning out to be the year of black knives for me.
