GEC #86 2021: Angus Jack, 2AB, Spring Street Barlow (BF Knife)

I suggest using a fine file and, if you want to be really safe, put blue painter's tape over the nearby bolster areas and blade edge so you do not accidentally put an ugly mark on it. Just go slowly and check often - it files very easily.
Mine were both proud too. Filed them both down to just not catch a finger. It only took a minute each. Just watch that you file it down squarely, and not at an angle. Then, don’t forget to touch the edges of the kick with the file as sometimes filing can roll over a little bur which can rub on the brass liners when opening and closing.

It finally meandered it's way across Atlantic, it has some of the nicest fit and finish of any GEC I've had, but there is a little scuff on the bolster.

The action F&F and quality of this run is really nice. It’s a big knife in a slim package and I think I like the rust orange best of them all.

Barry was up very early! My “your package has shipped” notice came in at 1:03 AM!
Got that same email at 1:02 am. Made for a great start to the morning! I have one more Rust Orange Bone 2AB inbound today which I’m going to try to trade for an OD Green to complete my set of the three 2AB’s from this run.

I guess I won’t be too disappointed if no one wants to trade their OD Green for my Rust Orange Bone 🙂

Will be interesting to see how many of the OD Green was produced. Rumor is that it’s a very low number.

Has it actually shipped or is it just the tracking number assigned by Barry’s stamps.com app?

Nice picture Barrett, Nanc and I are excited to see the kids for Halloween this year

Thanks, Paul! The girls are going as Bill Howard and Charlie Campagna for Halloween this year. 😁

(Ok, not really. 🤪 Everyone knows that waynorth waynorth cannot be imitated nor duplicated!) 😉 😁

The tip on both of my blades were very slightly proud. But as it turns out, there is tons of space between the blade edge and the back spring hump (about 10.5mm on my knife!) - the blades sit very high in the frame. It was a simple matter to file down the kicks on my knife. Now, the tips on both are well below the frame edge and zero blade rap.

Oh, and if it bothers you to file the kick, take a look at the photos of the knives others have posted, including factory photos. You will see a number of knives with the sharp point filed off of the kick. GECs are very well made factory knives for the money, but they are still factory knives, not customs. I think of it as helping the factory out a little with a final hand tuning step:)

Thanks, I think I will try and file it down myself. I've never done it before, but I think I'll try and watch some videos first.

Filing down the kick is simple enough. I’ve done it on the edge of a sharpening stone before, but a small file is better. And yes, that blade sits so high there shouldn’t be any concern about it hitting the backspring. That said, don’t take too much off, just enough to bring the tip inside the liners. If you take it down more than necessary it could/will cause the backspring to sink, too, and you don’t want that.

Big fan of these barlows. The rust orange natural bone looks great along with the stamped bolsters. Overall fit and finish is spot on. To me the single blade 86s are about perfect.
Could not agree more about the single blade 86 being perfect. Got my rust orange today. Like a lot of us, I've taken many a GEC out of the tin for the first time, and most of the times I'm happy. A few times I'm over the moon, and this is one of them. Wow.

The latter sir. For those of us seeing the tracking email this week I don’t think will see our knives ship until the end of next week or the week after that since GEC is on vacation this week.

For those that received tracking emails last week a few of them should be shipping so we’ll see them in the hands of folks soon

Ah, these are shipping direct from GEC? I was hoping they were shipping from GSJ since I just just found out they're located in Poulsbo, WA and I'm in Seattle so I'd get it real quick when they do start shipping.

Excellent point. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hyesouljah Hyesouljah I’ve seen some of your posts which mirrored my same concerns until I received the tracking number email. Ok now we’re in our rocking chair on the porch just waiting for the mailman. It may take awhile but it will happen. It will won’t it?
It most certainly is going to happen sir! With the blessing of the Mail gods our Spring Street Barlow’s will arrive safe and sound in no time!

I too believe it’s exactly as C CujiWuji stated sir. Shipping to GSJ’s then from there to us. I would tag CujiWuji but I still don’t know how to do that surprisingly enough.

It’s funny, cause you did tag him! I assume you figured it out, but you just put an @ and type their name.
