GEC Boys Knife Question

This is what I did to one of my Boy's Knives. I used a sanding wheel and a dremel tool to slowly make an easy open notch. A word of caution, the pen blade is fairly long and you don't have a lot of extra room between the bottom bolster and tip of the pen blade. If you decide to go this route, make sure your notch is far enough back that it doesn't expose the tip of the pen blade.

Photo of the EO notch would be great addition to your post :)

You are correct about the pen blade. Does have a lot of give. I can open it easier by pressing the pen blade down, but still not what I expected. No big deal - I can live with it if I have to and I will contact GEC. Just a little disappointed. It will make me think twice before making a purchase next time.

It's a shame. You've every reason to be disappointed, you shouldn't have to use special techniques, or mods, or grow your finger nails to open the main blade of a new knife. It might be worth you talking to GEC about it, maybe they can help

Here's a pic of my first Boy's Knife (I've got another now, given to me by SilentHunterStudios :) )

(I do wonder how this one made it past QC! )

Thanks Jack Black. Will talk to GEC on Monday. I also wonder how that made it out the door. Yours appears to be very similar to mine. Thanks for the support and pic.

You're very welcome my friend, other posters could not have have been kinder or more helpful when I had problems myself. Charlie (Waynorth) made the educated guess that what had happened with mine is that a small metal filing, lodged under the kick, had tricked the cutler into grinding too much off it. So that when the frame was blown out, the main blade then sank too low. As you can see from this second pic, the main blade sat very low in the frame.

I'm sure GEC are aware of the problem and will do the right thing :)

That sounds like a logical fix but a person shouldn't need to go to that extreme to make their brand spanking new knife comfortable to use.

jackknife makes an excellent point but I'm thinking the Boys Knife design was based on a person outside of GEC.

Anyway, a picture of your EO notch would be nice as Mike said.

Agreed. You shouldn't have to modify a brand new knife, but in my case, I wanted a new knife similar in style to the old Camilus EO jacks and the Boy's knife is awfully close. The clip blade version of the same knife is easily pinchable, but the spear is a little more difficult without an EO notch. I don't have an online photo hosting service, but I would be happy to email a photo of the knife to anyone interested. If someone chooses to, they could host it here.

Thanks,
Christian

You can email it to me Over/under and I'll get the photos up right away. Just click on my username and there is an email option there.

Those pix that Jack posted are actually shocking. How could they miss THAT??

I'm glad my Eureka doesn't display this 'feature'

I used to like side by side nail-nicks but now I've gone back to opposites, I actually prefer having the main blade on the inside liner for some reason.

I am posting this picture for Over/under. This is his Boys Knife that he added the EO notch.

I already emailed him back and asked for some closer up pictures including one with a close up of the eo notch and one with both blades closed lol. :) I knew you guys would ask that cause I was thinking the same thing.

Wow that EO notch looks great...makes me want to buy a two blade boys jack to try that out on.

Thanks much!

Nice, job, Over/under.

Now, we'd like to see it closed and pinch-able.

Please. :D

Thanks for posting the pics jkulysses. If GEC made a factory model like this with a cloud or propeller shield, my knife buying would be complete... almost

No problem, glad I could help. :) You really did do a great job on that EO Notch! Oh & who are you kidding about your knife buying being complete lol. I wonder if they have rehab for knife addiction?

my 2 blade spear is exactly the same.I can open it ok if I stick my thumbnail right down behind the pen. it opens no worries . What I'm wondering is why the made the nick so long because it is only accessible if you depress the pen blade.Strange...to say the least.
cheers.

Good question, Meako. Doesn't make sense to me either. The long nail nick is one of the things that I love about this knife. Update about my knife: When I contacted GEC about my knife they were quick to reply that the knives were made this way. Accessing the main blade can occur when you depress the pen blade. They did offer to try to lower the pen blade on mine to see if access to the main blade was improved, but I opted against it - the pen blade sits low already. Any lower and I might not be able to open it. It is strange, but ok. Maybe it is their ploy to keep my kids from opening it without my knowledge! :)

GEC response just doesn't seem right. The knife isn't functional the way it is. I wonder if all of them were made this way. If they aren't all this way, you have a legitimate complaint. I would talk to the Dealer that the knife came from to see if they can offer any reasonable help. They would have more influence with GEC to make it right or replace it.

I've never heard of or seen a folder were you had to depress one blade to gain access to the main or another blade. But, I am old enough to know that I don't know everything. All I can say is: It just isn't right.

I agree Double Ott. I haven't seen one either, but I am relatively new to the traditional world. Suppose I should have done some more research before purchasing. I may try to get some help from the dealer from which I purchased the knife. It's ok. Right now I have a Northwoods Norfolk in my pocket and I'm enjoying it.
