GEC Boys Knife Question

I was standing right next Pertinux when Bill Howard explained that the knife WAS made that way and he explained why. I agree 100% per cent with her account of the matter.

Hunh. I don't remember that at all, and [thought I] was just going on my experiences with my own knives.

I am evidently no longer a credible witness. :o

At the Rendezvous, in the Foyer, by where Charlie was set up, Somebody ( I thought it was you) mentioned that the Pen in Front layout made it hard to access the pull on the main blade. And they had to actually push down the pen blade to open the main blade. And Bill said "yes, that's the way it was designed". and went on to explain that one of the old two blade Boy's Knife ( I forget if it was a Remington or Shapliegh or what) had that feature on a Pen in Front design and that was incorporated into the 15 Boys Knife.

see the following thread for discussion about the pen blade. Note that the Charlow was based on a single blade Barlow with a slender handle. I would say the pen problem was discovered after the single blade Charlow was designed, and the attempted design fix was the backside swedge on the pen blade imo, not the squishy feature. As Sarah mentions, the pen was moved behind the main on the second run, due to the access problem.

Question: Do the 2 bladed Spear mained Boys knife NOT have the swedge on the back of the pen blade?

The two blade: Even though the long pull on the master "hides" behind the pen blade it is easy to access. There is a wide swedge on the back of the pen blade that lets your thumbnail slip right to the pull!

Thanks for all the opinions on the pen blade folks.

I have been aching to do this picture since the early days of the Great Barlow Project (GBP)!:D

Here are some pictures of the new TC Barlow with its nearly 100 year old progenitor*!

Many Barlows influenced the final form, but this New York one did so the most. It is at the longer end of the standard Barlow length, at virtually 3 1/2", and has a slimmer, less chunky handle than most. The Bolster stamp aligns with the axis of the knife - that's an N for New York, not a Z for Zucchini!:D
And it just feels good, for all its wear and tear, like an NYK should!
It was a long but satisfying road I must say!

fwiw, though my Remington spear bladed Barlow with Pen blade does not have the squishy pen blade of my GEC 2 blade Charlow, my Russell 2 blade Spear Main Barlow also has the squishy pen design, even though it is not needed for access to the main nail nick. My Camillus 51 that I just received as a gift from Stich also has the squishy pen feature, though again it is not needed to access the main, which in this case is a tall Clip anyway. BTW, the Camillus has really nice joints, they are almost completely flush (sunk) with the bolsters and liners. I really like that feature.

Just want to make sure I understand. What is meant by "squishy" when talking about the pen blade?
(I have one of the models being talked about right here on my desk as I type)

But what I really want to know is if the mystery woman "at the Rendezvous, in the Foyer, by where Charlie was set up", was not Pertinux then who was it? What was she doing there in the Foyer? What became of her? Did anyone see her arrive or leave? Most odd and curious I say.

In its closed position, the pen blade can be pressed vertically further down into the handle. Go ahead, try it!

Eh, it was most likely Pertinux with an o'erfull brain from all the excitement. That, or she couldn't hear a thing so just smiled and nodded and pretended before wandering off, and so retained nothing of actual information. It's been known to happen!

Rob, mystery women are always fascinating . . . but dangerous. Are you sure you want to know?

TC Sheepfoot Barlow with pen at rest, not squished, (not pressing on the pen):

squished pen (pressing on the pen it sinks into the pocket more than 1/8":

Does your Boys Knife pen blade have the backside swedge? Got photo?:-)

Mine has the backside swedge, is a tad squishy, and the spear blade rest a little bit higher than the problem one of Jone's. No real issues to speak of when opening it.

I knew it was P~ standing there. I THOUGHT it was her that remarked about accessing the main blade. No Mystery.
