GEC inflation

I sold the 3 that are on the listing for a lump sum price for much less than that. This is not my eBay listing though FYI I’d be a bit surprised if those really sell for that. They didn’t sell for nearly a week at the lower price I had them listed.
My apologies if my post came off as if I was insinuating you owned the shop, that wasn’t my intent and I don’t believe you do.

I like to use my GEC's. I really wanted an 86 2AB because I am a huge fan of GEC's treatment of 440C and it is rare for them to do such a desirable offering with it. Missed out trying to get one only to see them listed at $300 and up in droves on the secondary market. No way I'm going to pay that. My hat is off to folks that manage to score the full house of these offerings, but how many are getting them at retail, and how many are paying the flippers to round out their collections? I'll admit I was tempted to buy one anyway, but then I thought about it and what other things I could do with that money. I'm also kind of torn on this issue, folks put in the time to hunt and watch the dealer sites for a drop, and then re sell their property for inflated market value, and it is their right to do so. Personally the only thing I can do is to not support them. Resistance is futile, things will be what they will be in a free market. Like the Rolling Stones sang, you can't always get what you want...

for so many of them in those groups its "oh please iso this knife, its my grail knife"😒

Someone deals with them to help them out, obligatory "thank you this is so amazing post" when they receive, inside of a week is FS here, eBay, or another group "just not for me" with a 200% markup.

It happens so often.
One guy I've seem trash flippers I watch in the last week jump on a 43 for $80, got it in 3 days, wiped it clean, and put it up in the opposing FB group for $160 immediately.
They all have this phony "honor code" that no one actually adheres to.

yup, there was a guy who kept pestering for the 2019 bladeforums knife, and he ended up with two eventually. guess what the second one was used for?

I would just like to be able to buy a GEC without getting railroaded. I use all of my knives, they’re just tools ultimately. But I like to try different patterns and such, so I’m always looking for the next “perfect tool”.

But the flippers- and to some extent the collectors who do their best to buy three of every cover option- have ruined it. The most aggravating thing about it is, there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. And even if there were, I probably wouldn’t agree with the process of doing it.

I guess I just wish I had more expendable income when they sat on shelves for months at a time🙄

same, or without having to give up something from my collection just cause some one snatched up extra knives to force a trade or trades.

Wasn't that wild? You could be all "I think I shall purchase a Beer Scout today" and go online, pick one out and put it in your cart, go have a coffee and think about it and then come back, finish the order and get on with your day.

Yep, I can remember just 2 or 3 years ago, ordering a knife and carrying it for a couple weeks, and deciding it was so nice I ordered another to put away for backup. Obviously they were still available and everyone sold at MAP prices to be competitive. I guess I should've bought 5 of them and I could be one of the beloved flippers now. :)

Funny thing, last night I found one my early posts on Bladeforums while looking for another thing, and this discussion was actually had back in 2015-

Here’s hoping the cycle continues and the next year brings longer shelf life for GEC, though I’m sure they are loving selling everything as soon as it leaves the factory floor!

yup, back in like 2015, i watched a 77 in ebony on gunstockjack's site for four weeks and thought eh the wood's a bit light maybe. I did eventually buy it and got it blade deleted. different times

Question for the close observers. We rant and rave about the flippers selling GEC's for outlandish prices. I see some of these on ebay sitting for a long time with no bids. How many of these are really selling for the stupid asking prices?

I get your point and it’s valid, but also it’s kind of a moot point, they ask a really high price and maybe nobody buys it but the next person sees it and still goes by it🤷‍♂️ At this point I wish another company would try and compete a little harder. Case could do it, IF they put together a quality control team. When they do their best work, Case still makes great knives. They just aren’t up to the same standard as GEC. Obviously they aren’t after the same market. But this is my fantasy, and I’d love to see what Case could do if they focused on fit and finish. The variety of colors and covers they offer is unmatched. Albeit some (most) of them are gaudy, they have gorgeous shades of different colors. If a smaller company like GEC can maintain a high level of fit, surely Case could devote some of its manpower to at least a small number of patterns to up the quality.

i hope none tbh, im sure there are some folks with deep pockets that can afford it, but not all of us are in that position. im curious to see if those that get inflated to high prices actually sell or just get relisted.
