GEC new #43 pattern, who’s excited?

Thanks, waverave...I agree.

I love the triple grooved bolsters. I can see being large for some to carry, but open in hand...tough to beat.

I bought this to use.. but it's so nice I've yet to put it in pocket. Was torn between this and the green bone..great shield on that one. Need to pick one of those up.

Were there any 43's offered w/ long pulls? SFO's? Or Rams horn?

I liked the pattern so much when it arrived, I've sent it out for new covers...a back up is a good idea.

I truly love the Oregon Trapper. The whole package is so perfectly executed. Great ergonomics. Perfect size. Light in weight. Not too bulky in the pocket. And the clip blade is just the right shape for pretty much everything I throw at it.

I’ve bought a ton of of GEC’s over the years, and thought that most of them were excellent. But the #43 easily falls into my Top 5 favorite patterns from them. What it lacks in complication and artistry, in comparison to other GEC patterns, it more than makes up for them in sheer utility value. With a thickness behind the edge of .015” to .018”, the 3 1/8” blade puts most other knives to shame.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using my micarta 43 since I got it early last spring. It was an impulse purchase that quickly turned into one of my most used knives of 2018.

Upon reflection last Friday, I very much regretted not getting another 43 while I had the chance. But with a little searching, I managed to find a vendor that somehow had a good variety of them still in stock. My first thought was to get another micarta, since mine had worked out so well. But after a little soul searching, I decided to go with cocobolo. I’ve really enjoyed the cocobolo pictures I’ve been seeing lately, and felt I needed to add some wood to my knife collection.

The cocobolo I received on Saturday was every bit as good as my micarta. The 6 to 6.5 pull has tons of snap. Nice thin grind. Superb fit and finish. The wood grain on the well-matched covers is a feast for the eyes. I really dig the Northfield trim too.

I think my next mission is to find a very low profile leather belt sheath for the Oregon trapper. If anybody has a suggestion, please let me know.

That’s a lovely example! You should follow up after awhile and let us know how the Northfield features suit you compared to the Tidioute.

Looks great! This is one of their best patterns. A great slicer too. I use mine to slice baby carrots for my dogs food every single day.

I think they made a jigged cherry wood with a Beaver on it. I should have picked one of those up.

I followed your lead on this, and I’m glad I did! I just wish I could have been snowshoeing in the Adirondacks on Saturday too...

The 43 is a great pattern. Just be careful not to snap it closed because I have had issues with the edge hitting the back spring. Other then that. Very Nice. I have a stag one that I cherish.

Thanks Buzzbait... now I’m beginning to twitch with desire. ;)

Mine did that for a while but it sharpened out. It was not the worst case of blade rap I've seen so that was good.

Hmmm Yummy! Cut that bread in two in his length, spread some butter, slice some Comté and white ham, a sour pickle if you're in a fancy mood, now enjoy your Paris-beurre!

It is hard not to love this Oregon Trapper!! A larger knife, with a firm spring, and a well-ground blade, it would be useful for many tasks, and certainly not limited in size at nearly 4 1/4"!!
Better for a day's walk that might include making lunch, or even for a picnic with a barbecue, than a smaller knife like a Barlow (which I would carry in the other pocket!!):)
So - - - - -safe queen or pocket?????
Tough to decide!!o_O It's such a great looking knife, with it's matched Frontier Bone, and broad, flat-ground blade! Looks good with my worn old Navajo ring too! I would be strutting my stuff!!:D
I will let it look back at me in front of my computer for a few days; decide later!
Many knives to choose from; life is good!!
