GEC Rendezvous and Picnic!

Thank you Zolthar!

I picked up this Mint 1970 10 dot stunning Stag beauty from Tom- now those who meet Tom- got to really like this Character very quickly- man- there was no winning from a deal with Tom he was slicker than a West Side Alley Cat - anyway- I couldnt keep myself away from this beautiful Large Folding Hunter- now Tom the previous day did not budge an inch- Im telling you- it was fun dealing - or trying to I should say- well Tom came and had dinner with us that night- the next day I am sure he just took pity on me still looking at this Knife- now this was something kinda magical- it actually brings tears to my eyes because my friends came in and somehow the deal was done without me quite having a say in it- Tom came down in price !! and the Dave was watching ( Im trying to recall this clearly ) - I imagine him grinning Ear to Ear - and then Dave added to the deal in such a way that just took me back and I tried to argue- and I would just LOVE to be able to repeat the words that Dave told me lol - then Bang! - Paul added to the deal with again such clout that these three guys made this knife mine all I had to do was add a little - Tom, Dave and Paul- this Knife will never leave me- these Knives gifted to me mean one hell-of-a lot - and this one raised the bar because of the Hilarity and such specialness ( is there such a word? )...this to me is an immensely precious Knife- I just wish I could take you - the reader - back to this moment- because I am there right now and its quite an emotional thing- good friends are worth their weight in Gold...thank you friends for this Treasure.....
Forgive the Oil wipe marks...

The next day Paul and I arrived at the Queen Vintage Knife show- I learnt a good couple of lessons here- which will come up as different Knives do- but I found a great mate to my amazing 10 dot that I just told you about- this one belonged to a Seller called John- a mate of Tom's..good guy actually- with I dare say the most genuine Knives in the whole Show- and he wasnt asking the world...anyway....another Beauty Stag Large Folding Hunter Case '64-'69. The thing that impresses me is that these Knives are genuine- and still Mint,

After being at the Show- and learning a couple of lessons- and coming home and studying some knives ( again which is coming up ) It leaves you with a weary distrust, such lesson learnt at your first big Knife show- can only be learnt at your first big Knife show- if that makes sense and I know now a lot more than what I did before through these mistakes, I will look at a knife a lot more differently now,l and because of this I actually treasure the experience.

I talked to Charlie, Dave, Paul about this Knife, this is a DE Shapleigh stunner of a Camp Knife- the subject came up about etching- well I got my Knives home and looked hard at this knife- I finished- and put it down and have repeated this exercise over the last 6 or 7 nights.
The Knife has been cleaned - but I cant understand as to why- because the Knife seemed to have been good from the start - each utensil has been finely re-finished, I compared this Camp Knife to the many others I had- suspicions started to grow about Blade welding- then they were dispelled as I studied how the Knife Blades were Crinked in Factory to give way to the next blade- this in turn of course changes the Spine at the Crink - Blade thicknesses that didnt match the Spines raised alarm bells- but once looking at every other Camp knife- this is a common thing with these- especially with the utensil matching the thicker Spines- so again suspicions calmed down...until........
I picked up my loupe and looked very carefully at the etch on the Blade - under this etch ( now I can clearly hear Charlie re-telling me a story about a chap who bought a knife that had an etch....)..I had to get my Blade in just the right light- but I got it.... this knife's Blade has been re-etched, there are the finest scratches that run underneath the etch - all in all the Knife I think maybe still is good- I am keeping that one open though- I have studied this knife real careful - and perhaps someone may be able to tell me if the 1066 is a model Number- if so- does it match this Knife?
At the end if this I have a knife that has been ......
1, Cleaned.
2, Blade re-etched
Does this warrant the Knife to be called a Fake?... the jury is out on that for me right now- ok the Blade has been re - etched but does that change the Knife?

I ask this because I value your opinions, and to really rub salt into the wound- when I got home I found a crack on the Mark side Bone- R/H pin :(
Stil- after all of this - think its a nice Knife, but value the serious collectors opinion- would this still be an acceptable knife for a serious collection? and I Invite your opinions.. .( white Paper used to reflect the Blade - to stop reflections of table etc )

While looking through the shop I spyed this 85, now I love the 85's - a great frame, and I asked to take a closer look - so out of the Cabinet it came, I saw the
un-X-ld Shield buried deep into the Stag- im a sucker for Stag... I calmed myself down and acted real cool- and slowly turned the Knife over - OH SWEET MAMMA :eek::eek:- I think I would have spat Coffee all over the Counter if I had not have put my drink down - the unique Stag just lept up and smacked me one- man I didnt even open the Knife when I heard my self stammer "I'll take this one" Yeah uh-huh Duncan...that was real cool man:(
I laughed when Sarah looked at it and said "Eeeewww yuk" - Stag this different will do that, and thats good- Knife buying / Collecting is such an individual thing and I appreciate that.
Me personally? I just think this knife has Wow Factor when it comes to Stag!, Oh...and the Blades ended up being typical GEC as I found out about 10 minutes after buying the Knife:oops: - simply awesome!

i kept going over those in the store. Patty mustve taken all 7or 8 out for me to examine. Wouldve loved to have bought one, but the operation to make it a knife for me would cost me that beautiful stag sadly. beautiful clip blade!

That 85 certainly does have some unique Stag my friend . That is almost like a Signature . The Lyle's Lick Creek 38 is one knife that I am sorry that I did not get when they were available and the covers you got are IMO the nicest ones .

Duncan, if that were bone or wood or something artificial it probably would have ended up on the garbage pile. Being stag however makes it an oddity to be treasured. The clip point and the stag make that 85 a knife for the ages. I'm officially jealous. Enjoy!

Duncan, I must say I had quite a moment of mixed emotion when you showed that 85 to me at the store knives display.

I'm not a stag guy in general (I think most of it looks beautiful, but I don't like the super thick scales, or the price) and my first thought was "what affliction did that deer suffer from" but your genuine affection for it was actually somewhat contagious. I still can't say it's my cup of tea, but I definitely enjoy it's uniqueness, and your appreciation of it.

It's probably my favorite thing about talkin' knives - we just don't share stories and knives, but our perspectives as well. And although we may still not love a certain pattern or material, we see why someone else does - and we have respect for that.

I can't wait for next year, but I'm glad I have more time to absorb history, terminology, and perspectives before trying to keep up with all of you guys!

Thanks for all the interesting posts and great images. I 'm planning to be there next summer.

Cheers Alan, Ryan and Dave!:)

Rons Great Medal that he gifted me before he and Pam went home- He wished that it could be Silver- but I think this is just perfect and wish it to be nothing else than what it is- an awesome Coin, a one ounce Copper Coin- Liberty one one side- so beautifully Engraved, and the American Eagle on the other, Im proud to own this Ron- and it hasnt been forgotten, and we will talk very soon my friend, I apologise about the terrible photos- as I was taking photos the weather got worse and worse and this was a very por inside shot as I quickly gathered everything inside out of the rain :( Rons Coin with Evans Stag Sheepsfoot Barhead that he made for me - I will take better shots of both items when I can....

If its got a single Blade and it's Shiny- it will belong to Jack - aka Mr. Knife lol.... what a guy- Paul and I took a very quick liking to Jack...I hope we get to see him in a short time to come as we enjoyed Jacks company a lot!
I had to actually tell both Jack and Paul off like little Children in the car- both were misbehaving quite badly - so I pulled the car over and scolded them that I would not stand for such profanity :D..... well ok it wasnt like that at all- we had a ball!
Jack showed me this Knife and I said yeah Jack thats a nice Knife- and he just wouldnt take it back- it was getting embarrassing on just how generous the amazing group of friends are - I have a "catch up list" where I will contacting my freinds with a payback:D
So here is Jacks' Hen and Rooster - you know it's a shame that this knife wont take a mean Patina to horrify Jack -to educate our friend that all that is Shiny is not pretty :D
Jack- Thank you matey.....

Awesome tales of friendship Duncan! Jack is like that. He won't take no for an answer. Evan knocked it out of the park with that sheepsfoot!
I find myself staring repeatedly at the stag on those Case Hunters. I was never really a fan of the knife myself, but oh that stag! It's just aging to a beautiful coloring.

Duncan, great Case hunters! I love the stag on both of them.

As for the Shapleigh, a well known, now deceased dealer had a "factory find" of Shapleighs a while back. There were a lot of doubts by some collectors that these were actually fully assembled, factory finds. The same dealer was also known for making a lot of Case Classic knives with multiple "prototype" etchings. I bought some Henckels from this dealer and they both still had polishing compound on them. I also bought an old Winchester (not from him) that had an etch that most here on BF thought was recently applied. I got rid of all of them because they kind of bummed me out, and I want to feel good about the knives I have. I did say I thought the etch was fake, and that the Henckels were recently assembled/polished when I sold them.

Hope I wasn't a buzzkill on this thread. I've enjoyed reading and hearing about all of the fun.

Campbellclanman Campbellclanman I have been thinking about this since you posted the DE camp knife. I feel somewhat the same as Mike regarding the bummed out feeling when you find something is not what it may seem.:( You will always admire your collection but then there is the niggly "not sure how I feel about that knife" syndrome. I have a knife that I keep as a reminder for things to look at when viewing/purchasing knives at shows etc, just trying to be more subjective than just parting with the green stuff too quickly. Ultimately if you keep the knife or let it go, you know you will be more careful next time coon fingering or chicken eying:D your next prospective purchase. :)

Russell.

I have been thinking about that suspected Re-etch, Duncan. If you are convinced it is re-etched, why not polish it off!! It will sort of put the knife back into acceptable territory, if a bit over-cleaned. I had one with a suspect etch at one time, and was bummed as described, so gave it away with a warning, but if you undo the "dirty work" . . . . . . . . . . .hmmmmm???

Charlie- my mind has traveled there with that very thought.
I don't think that the knife has anything else done other than been cleaned - and done well I must say.- but in saying this - it's been cleaned!
I'm going to look at that etch again- although I don't need to but just to underline what I have seen - and then I may do just that and carefully remove the etch - because it's just not THE original. That will leave me with a cleaned knife I'm thinking at this stage.
I won't of course remove the Etch unless 100% sure.

@philllll - you have a DE catalog my friend ? can you find this knife there at all? Possibly source the knife with the 1066 behind the Main ?
Thank you all for the comments - basically everything you guys have said is what I am thinking - great stuff!
