GEC Rendezvous and Picnic!

Well........it's time for old Dave to eat some crow! They say if you have to, it's better to eat your crow while it's still warm! This is a very cold bird in front of me here!!:(

But 1st I'll run a little interference to distract you all from just how completely inept I can be at times!:rolleyes: o_O

I remember ~P. talking about her experience at the Rendezvous making the finished draft for the back label of the latest TC's from Charlie. Here is what she had to say....
Finally, of Knives and the Man; a lifetime Highlight:

As many of you know, I often help Charlie ( waynorth waynorth ) bring the back labels of his SFOs to completion, reading over his prose and assisting however I can to make sure he's saying what he means to say-- and means what he's saying!!

This has occasioned multiple 11th-hour email flurries involving a wild variety of encumbering variables, including non-congruent time zones, painstaking clarifications (to ensure accuracy in the absence of tone and other context), sent emails that never arrive, un-openable attachments, etc.

The Bladesforums Barlows were in full production during the Rendezvous. Thursday night, I suddenly wondered to myself, "Wait, Charlie will have knives coming out as well. I wonder what he's done about the label?"

Friday morning, I arrived at the GEC factory to discover 1) the first of Charlie's barlows, hot off the cookie sheets-- they were a'comin'! and 2) Charlie, sitting at his knife display surrounded by passersby, furiously scribbling on a clipboard holding unlined paper-- his label, due NOW.

He finished up his thoughts and handed the clipboard over to me. I sat in the hallways of GEC, surrounded by passersby, and wrote out the label once, conferred with Charlie, wrote it out again, checked with Charlie, then wrote it out one last time to (hopefully!) remove any confusion due to handwritten vs. typed text. We then walked the final version over to the correct office and person at GEC, and soon enough the actual label was printed and DONE.

... I cannot tell you how much this experience means to me. After all the years of emails, any one of the following would have made an impact, but to have them at work at the same time?!
Charlie and I were together
at the GEC Factory
while the knives in question were being produced
and we wrote out the label and its revisions long-hand, kickin' it old school
and could ask and answer and clarify questions in real time
and we handed in the label together to the person who actually prints them
and got to see the finished result almost immediately
Oh, my little heart.

I am grateful for technology, for email, and for .pdf documents that preserve formatting, but there is something personal, direct, and deeply moving about putting pen to paper-- an engagement, an investment, an oh-so-fitting culmination of a lot of work and words.

I am especially grateful to Charlie for including me, and for his generosity throughout.

To engage this process with Charlie in that setting...?

More than I could have known to ask for; timeless good.

Thank you, Charlie.

~ P.

Here in this video, at approximately 6 mins in, while Apostle P is talking to me, you can see ~P. actually putting the final draft together! On a hard metal folding chair, with knife-nuts scurrying all around her, she is completely focused to the task at hand.
I wasn't aware if anyone else observed ~P. in the background or what was actually transpiring, but I thought it was pretty cool to have it recorded!:cool:

aimless youtube wandering has turned this up, 2017 scrap book!

Now for the Crow eating part!! o_O
Friday nite after most folks had gone to bed a few of us got together in my room and shared knives and stories.
Duncan, Paul arrived first with Augie and Apostle P a little later. Duncan brought out this little Schrade Cut Co. Pearl Beauty and gifted it to me! I was floored! He had just gifted me that Beautiful little D-E and then this!! All in a matter of minutes! I remember thinking I had better put this little pearl beauty someplace safe so she don't get all banged up, it was early in the weekend and I knew there going to be some knives jostled around, so I slipped her into a cushioned knife roll I had.........and by the end of the weekend forgotten all about her!

Well a couple of days ago I found so time to start photographing the Schatt and Morgan knives I acquired at the Rendezvous and in that roll out pops this Sweet little Cut Co.!!
Now it's panic time!!!! I know someone gifted me this Beauty but I'll be d@mned if I can remember exactly WHO!!! :( At 1st I was pretty sure it was Paul and I wrote him a groveling email asking if it was him that gave it to me or if he could remember who did? Paul set me straight and as soon as he said Duncan all the pieces fell back into place!

So here she is!!!!! Thank You Duncan My Friend! It is a Beautiful Schrade and even though I completely lost track of her I have found her again and I feel MUCH better!!
Now I just need something to get this fowl taste out of my mouth!! :D:D

Crow? Crow? I dont see no damned Crow! all I can see is a Pearl- given to a Gem of a Guy- thats all Im seein'
No need for saying Thanks Dave- I owe you a ton- its a massive Thank you my friend, I just went and played that video of you getting interviewed- man thats swet looking at that- whew! what a great time it was there- saving up for the Big show this time my friend!
You know what I love about that wee Pearl Schrade- the Bail- that bail is so so neat man, when you take a close look at it- its so well done! hey - so is the rest of the Knife too!
lol I can still just close my eyes and see us sitting round that table- you, me, Tom and Paul- magic mate- Magic.

Jack- you were passed out on the Floor my friend :D

Ok...a few pages back- whew I just dont know how many - I told you of Harry gifting me this lovely old Western- now this Ol' Girl has seen some hard times- Harry gifted me this because the Knife has a Punch- now I can still see Harry smiling awayas he was talking to me- even offered me a beautiful Stag German Folder- but I just could not accept it as here now was my Western - and it was mine!...Someone had obviously had an argument with the Knife before Harry's time with it - and took to it with a Grinder- well this Ol Girl Survived, but came out from the fight second best....

I have been waiting for my Ken Onion Worksharp to arrive- and it did, so I took a bunch of Knives down to my garage and let loose.

My wanting to pocket this Knife meant this was first, so I gently re-tipped the old thing with out any heat at all- by slowly taking it down to a new point by hand - re-profiled the now new flat edge into a workable edge- for the Worksharp.
I didnt want to take the Grinding out- this will reside back into the blade with Food Patina in time.

I didnt loose much blade at all- as I was sure to keep it to a Minimum Loss - spent a bit of time working it through to be honest- but Man.... I just need to look at this Knife and my eyes bleed :D
Heres the before shot....

My FRIEND : You do not know how happy I am to see the little Western again . You did a Great Job with the re-tipping . That little knife was destined to end up in New Zealand with someone who would really appreciate it . Thanks for pointing out that some other owner had taken a GRINDER to the blade . I would never do that to a knife blade . I always thought that YOUR little knife was also a great In the Pocket on Sunday knife .
Please carry it in good health my friend !!!!

Very belated thanks for pointing this out! I would have missed it otherwise. o_O

Just tried booking at the local Quality Inn in Titusville where I stayed last August for the 2017 GEC Rendezvous and they are all booked up. Dooh!

I liked the easy walk into town and the accommodations were good, plus breakfast. Hope I don't have to head off to Oil City or Franklin to overnight.

I wonder if that's mostly the Rendezvous, or the oil festival also? Either way, I think it's going to be even busier this year. It's grown exponentially even in the last 4 years I've been going. I'm really looking forward to this year. I'm hoping to be there at least Thursday and Friday, maybe Saturday also.

Dave

Dave, great knife! I've always wondered, how are tip bolsters like this held on?

Whenever you want to start it Jack !!!! Nancy & I will be there . Reservations are made . We hope to see you there . Have not heard yet that you will be there !!!!

Harry

we'll see my friend! Just noticed some leaky pipes in the house and they tore up the ceilings and can't find a thing :( gonna be a mess

I’d love to go to a rendezvous sometime, but my place in life right now makes it unlikely. Looking forward to pictures, though!

Mark (markesharp) and I were going to try and make it this year but a rather large expense on my end put the kibash on that:eek:o_O Like Cub fans say (or used to) "maybe next year"

Will do Jack. Duncan however doesn't plan to come state side again until 2020, then our sights are on the Oregon show.
