That's cool Rob. I coach my boys baseball team. We havnt had our first game yet but have been practicing 3 nights a week. Got a lot of good hitters but half of them can't catch a ball if you handed it to them. All seem like good boys though. That's worth a lot.

In other news, today was one of those days. Locked my keys in the shop which also had my shop keys with it.. skipped out of work which I don't mind but the pay sucks. Worked in the shop. My bandsaw had a bearing that literally exploded. Went to ball practice only to return home and find one of my good friends and a guy from church working on my garage door that was crumpled up due to my wife closing it on the back end of her car. So she calls them hoping to fix it before I get home. No hiddin that........so finally put the kids to bed. My son starts crying because he lost his favorite camo hat that grandma gave him a couple of years ago. Said he took it off to jump on the trampoline and the wind took it. So I just came out from outside searcing for it.......no avail........tomarrows a new day. I at least wish I could of found my boys hat. He's heartbroken.

Leo probably ate the hat, if not it'll turn up. You should switch to better beer, it'll improve your day.

Man today sucks. My laptop just stopped working, the screen stays off and the caps lock key flashes, that's it. Called HP, they want 200 to fix it.

Yea right. I'm not paying that. I have no idea how to fix it either. What a day.

It is a long shot but you can try power cycling it. You remove the AC Adapter and battery and hold the Power button down for about 15 seconds, plug in AC power and try to power it on... has worked for me a few times on multiple platforms... toshiba, asus, hp... good luck

Yea I removed the battery, reset the battery, it powers up but nothing on the screen, over the phone the guy said it was the motherboard, something about the caps lock flashing. So I'm waiting for the wife to come home so I can steal her iPad for a while.she has it locked up right now or Id already of taken it lmao... Much prefer a real keyboard and screen but I'll make due...I guess I could get the keyboard case for the iPad...uhhh I'm going to have to buy a new computer...don't really care for tablets...there just big ass phones really.

Worldwood, did they tell you what's wrong with it? If not, pm me your laptop model and I'll see if I can find the right parts for you on eBay. My guess it either graphics card (most often the case with laptops, due to cooling issues) or a bad screen. Either way, eBay is your friend and some careful work will save you some dough and let you play with the guts of your computer.

If I was close, I'd offer to help, but shipping it back and forth would probably be $60-$80, anyway.

I gave it a try cold but no dice.

Is there anyway to keep the stuff I had on the hard drive saved? Or is it gone if the motherboard is fried?

I tried to pm but this crappy phone is being a pain. It's a dv7 4069wm ... wq865ua#aba.... ? Is that what you needed?

I think you nailed it. You will need to remove your keyboard (probably a series of screws on the bottom of the laptop will release it). Most likely, the thermal compound on the CPU heatsink was inadequate and your CPU went bad from heat. You can try to unseat the CPU and reseat it. Also, scrape off the crappy thermal pad HP uses and put a small drop if Arctic Silver Thermal Compound on the cpu before replacing. Try that, see if you can get it to boot up. If not, replacement CPUs will be cheaper than $200. I would need the product number and serial number to tell you exactly what processor it came with / could be used in it.

Thanks man I'll give that a go here in a little bit and see what happens,

But if the CPU or motherboard is shot can I somehow recover the stuff on my hard drive? That's more important than the computer really.

Accidentally hit reply to thread instead of post reply after writing a book.. basically said what mrn8 posted... Sometimes you can get a great upgrade processor for cheap if the laptop is old enough. I upgraded the CPU in my Asus and it was like $75. And I second getting rid of the pads vs some artic silver. I did that to my laptop CPU and vid card and it dropped the temps significantly.

Yeah you can, a cheap SATA to USB adapter would do it. I have a Vantec adapter that does SATA and IDE drives.

Here is the one I have LINK

It can transfer the data even if the computer doesn't work? Do I remove the hard drive first sorry I'm lost with these computers, and thanks everyone for all the help

Yes, you would remove the hard drive from the comp and then connect the SATA adapter and power supply to the hard drive and then plug it in the USB of another computer. You can then browse it like any drive on the system. Basically makes it into a giant thumb drive...

Do desktop computers have less issues than a laptop? I mean this has lasted me 3 years and that's the longest ones ever lated me out of 6 or 7 laptops. And this thing was over 8 hundred bucks. I need a better, long term investment...

Alright you slackers, back to work. I say as I sit here at work doing nothing.

I wouldn't say they have less issues. Heat is one of the biggest enemies of computers and laptops tend to run hotter just because of the cramped environment.. I blow the dust out of mine once a week, it can make a 15-20 degree difference.

Suggestions for Best all in desktop for 500 or less? Preferably available at the big river store???
