Gentlemans Office EDC Deep Carry 3in or Smaller

Honestly, I am a little underwhelmed with the quality of the Boker FR overall. The one I have has developed a little slipping on the lockbar after months of use. I did use it to do some light whittling though, so I may have pushed the knife a little too hard. It's a great knife for simple cutting tasks, carries well, and has a subtle style similar to the Mnandi (I'm fond of wood scales on small knives lately). If you're main concern is to have basically a classy letter/package opener that's easy to get in and out of the pocket and use one-handed, the FR should do great. I wouldn't expect to use it as a utility knife though.

I carried the FR with me today and performed a bit of maintenance on it, and discovered why the lockbar had some slippage. Apparently, the lockbar and and the part of the blade ground for the lockbar don't quite match up along the length of the lockbar face. I'd guess that the blade's lockbar portion was ground at a slightly off angle. That caused excessive wear on just the top portion of the lockbar and the build-up of metal dust was severely reducing friction on the lockbar face. I cleaned it up and the blade now locks up tight (although with lock stick now, but preferable to how it was before). Maybe I'll try to wear in the lockbar more and see if it gets better.
I still think the FR would make a great gentleman's knife. I'd just make sure you can try one in hand before making a decision on it. Sorry for dragging out my opinion on the FR. I just wanted to make sure I gave a fair evaluation of it. ;)

Lol. Idk if I'd carry a fr now since you went on and on.

lol :p

I just really want to like this knife as it's got a lot of the qualities of what I'd consider my "perfect knife". Also has some issues and things I don't like though. It'll stay in my collection for sure, but I've since picked up other knives I enjoy using more.

I'm still trying to figure out how people carry pocket clip folders in dress slacks. There's no way I could pull that off, let alone not ruin my slacks slipping the knife in and out all the time. I carry traditional slipjoints in the office and my Case Peanuts get the most use.

With Dress Slacks and clipped knives it is important to choose not to use knives like Emersons or Cold Steels where the rugged G10 will shred your pants pockets in short order. For other knives like the small Sebenza 21 I think it is perfect to wear clipped to slacks as the clip doesn't rest on a cheese grater of g10. I have had very good luck with my small 21 in my slacks pockets.

I don't know what the price limit is but Serge Pachenko makes some awesome little knives that would be right at home in an office setting. There are also lots of Japanese makers producing updated versions of the classic Higonokami knife that are perfect knives for an office setting.

Thank you, greatly appreciated

So after handling the CR Mnandi, Small Sebenza, Mcusta and a number of other I decided to go with the Mcusta MC0053DR with VG10 Damascus that is gorgeous and cocobolo wood. I picked it up for only 120. I also picked up a Spyderco Nishijin Dragonfly with the 3 hole screw configuration. Turns out it uses Benchmade holes so I added a deep carry clip. I couldn't be happier, both knives are awesome and cut like light sabers. Perfect size and gorgeous enough for gentlemans carry. Still have the Shinola Valet and Boker Plus FR/ Petite Urban Trapper on the radar though.

Take a look at the Ki3 series of knives from Kizer. I have one and it is definitely a gentleman's knife. It is small, thin and light. I would also give a thumbs up to Mcusta knives. You don't need a flipper for a gentleman's knife.

If not already suggested how about the Three Rivers Nomad LTC which is a modern slipjoint with a 2.5ish inch blade and a deep carry titanium clip?

Nice choice with the Mcusta. Very nice looking knife! Glad you found one that works for you. :)
