Gentleman's tactical

If you like the 710 (and who doesn't?) then you should look at the Spyderco Police 3.

That's a thought although I've had some bad experiences with Spyderco's backlock. It refused to lock several times because of a small piece of pocket lint. The knife was a pacific salt hawk bill. Still I do know it is a strong lock if it functions properly. There is the lateral play, but that's to be expected.

I would go with the BM 940-2. I bought one and I love it. It is so light weight and with a deep carry pocket clip it is invisible. It isn't too grippy that it could rip your knife clothes, but it has enough grip that in a pinch it will serve you well for SD. The deployment on my is just to envy. Needless to say, it gets my nod.

Of those three choices, I'd say the 710, mainly for the axis lock. Keep in mind they have a black blade version as well - very sexy. Most of the other suggestions are good as well: Brous Sniper, ZT 0450 (or 452CF if the 710 blade size is ok), ZT 0801, Kizer Sunburst....
No one has mentioned the Boker Kwaiken yet. That's a nice slim attractive folder. A bit on the heavy side compared to the Kizer or Sniper, but gotta love the blade style.

My choise is made. It is Benchmade 710. The reasons are as follows:
- I wanted a bigger blade this time, I have some 3-3 1/2 inch knives
- I watched some videos of the axis lock and how to maintain it. It really is a no-brainer if you take the time to learn how it works (and hopefully I don't break the omega spring, which as people here said is rare) and it is way more sturdy than the liner lock
- The design is a classic
- Overall f&f and materials should be really good
- According to reviews it carries well for the size

So I will make the deal today. Thank you for your views and support :)

Maybe send it on a detour to Steve Ketchen (Sketchen Scales) on the forum first ;) He added some amazing thunderstorm kevlar and OD micarta scales to mine and I think he's done very nice work to one for palonej too!

I have (or have owned) the Spyderco GB (both of them), multiple Mcusta Tactilities, the ZT 0452, and many others which could be considered "gentleman's folders", and would say that the Tactility is VERY light and slim. Many of them are finished in beautiful natural woods, and they cut very well. If I wanted a gentleman's folder that could also work hard, I'd carry the Spyderco GB2. If I am in a suit, I usually end up carrying a traditional slipjoint, or one of my Tactilities. Super light, slim, vanish into a suit-pants pocket.

I won't remark on the suggested Benchmades, because I'm not a huge Benchmade fan. Just don't like most of their designs.

First impressions of the BM 710. Much has been written about this knife so I don't think I can offer anything really new. The only flaw I could find is that closed the blade is just a bit off center. This is not a reason to return it, but I have much cheaper knives where the centering is perfect.

Anyway the knife carries well because of the slim profile. This is not very light, but even with a 4 inch blade and sturdy construction this is not bad at all and the weight was to be expected.

The lock is everything they arvertised, action is superbly smooth. I have confidence in this piece of cutlery. The edge was sharp, but ever so slightly rough. I stropped it and results were good, it cuts paper effortlesly now. When I get home I will put some green stropping paste on the strop and proceed to get an even sharper blade.

So I am very happy with my first Benchmade folder.

Wait until the Spyderco Sage 5 is readily available.

It's out now but they are hard to find. Give it a week or two.

There is a slight rattle when the blade is closed, not when open. It must be the stop pin. Is this normal and what can I do?

Sometimes you can stop the rattle by tightening the pivot a tiny bit if it's the blade moving around a little.
Could it be the pocket clip? Sometimes there isn't enough tension on them and the clip isn't in contact with the scale.
