Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife

I thought about doing that but I figure it would be more of the same.
Seems pretty standard with alot of the companys I've contacted.
Got to cover that ass! :)

Yeah, from her e-mail to you, it doesn't appear that thinking is part of her job description. Sigh.

I don't question her abilities. She is just doing her job.
It would be nice for a "knife-geek" to respond though. I'd rather have too much info than none at all.

I can just see a bunch of Chinese in some sweat chop driving out the old pin, filling the hollow handle with epoxy, attaching the pommel, and diving in a new pin.

Yeah so could I I was hoping they would just make the handle out of metal but that would not be cost effective

I'm not angry with you Eddie , you just broke my heart that's all.

The concept Gerber put forward was excellent. Showed considerable thought and if carried through would create a superb survival knife.

I am waiting, I know that my youngest would love one.

I think the product is obviously aimed at children. From what I can gather, so is the show. Most of the stuff he does on it doesn't seem remotely connected to 'surviving' but rather to showing how much of a pickle he can get himself into - and out of. What else can you expect from television though....

Thank you so much for this review.

I just saw the knife advertised in a magazine and came on here to see what anyone thought of it.

From the pictures in the ad and its price, I figured it was made in China.

If Gerber knives reads this, I for one am one of those people who will not buy things made in China. Unfortunately, in this day and age, so many things are made in China and nowhere else I am forced to buy items made there (i.e. blenders, TVs, etc.). However, when given a choice between buying an item made in China or elsewhere, I will choose elsewhere.

That said, I am curious how far into the handle does the knife steel go that you broke off the butt of the handle? To clarify, you just was using the knife as a baton and the handle broke?! Pathetic!

I have not seen a whole episode of "Man Vs. Wild" ever, mostly because it seems so staged from the bits I do see. The review of this knife reaffirms my belief that "Man Vs. Wild" is just a commercialized version of survival shows to cater to the masses. Gerber, quite frankly, shame on you for rewarding this joker Bear Grylls with a knife named after him. I had an inkling that anything endorsed or named after Bear Grylls would be a joke.

I enjoy watching "Dual Survival" and "Survivorman" and if a product is endorsed by any of those men, I will take it seriously. However, not Bear Grylls. If anything, things that are endorsed by Bear Grylls I will most likely avoid. I was kind of hoping to be proven wrong, because the concept of the knife set up seems promising, but with a lot of things, when a product tries to do a lot of different things, it winds up being of poor quality. And this review unfortunately confirmed my suspicions.

Are new ones hitting the market yet? I saw a boatload of them at Fry's Electronics of all places.

Not sure I'd believe that even if I saw it. Do they carry anything else like that? Definitely one of the last places I'd would think would have it.

I heard that the local Walmart had some. I sincerely hope those had the pommel secured better than the one I tested. I break very, very few knives in my reviews. The "Ultimate" knife holds a place of distinction. It has to be one of the worst made survival knives I have ever used. Those cheap ones with the bottle openers and saw back from the 1980s were better.

They usually have folders and multi tools. First time I can recall they have big fixed blades. They also have the Tanto version Prodigy. They have SAK's and CRKT knives too. They also have the rest of the BG series except for the machete.

why not just buy a jet scream whistle and a starfire signal mirror and then pick up a light my fire and a bk2! i have a special place in my heart for gnarly fixed blades and the bk2 ranks up there with the best of them and you can pick one up for like 55.00 dollars if you search for like 5 minutes lolyou can buy all the stuff listed and some micarta handles for the becker tank and be at like just 100 dollars give or take a bit. i don't see the point to a knife like this, but the person who would go out and buy one of these knives will probably never find themselves in any kind of situation god willing where they would need to actually use the knife or any of its features. a company like gerber should have designed a better knife i expected more from them.

Gerber should wise up and change their steel. Why don't they contract with sanrenmu. I like alot of Gerbers designs but their material are horrible.

Dont doubt the BG knife is a pos. And not surprised that Gerber has done this. But I don't think Bear is deserving of much of the disparaging remarks. He is a fella that apparently have given significant service to his country and no doubt for a smallish sallary and is just taking advantage of the opportunity to make some good money for himself and his family as many if not all of us would.
However, as a lesson to BG, I think he should have to spend his next 2 or 3 survival stints with one of these Gerber toys just to ensure that he takes any future commercial exploits a little more seriously.
The Stroud/BG programs are interesting but both are very different. I like to catch them both every now and then.

I wonder if marketing like that will give rise to liability with the failure of the device, or perhaps it will merely constitute puffery. Time will inevitably tell when the lawsuits roll in.

While I wouldn't wish it on anyone to need this knife for survival - I would love to see a lawsuit if only because it might shed on light this POS knife.

I also would love someone to get this review to Mr. Grills and see how/if he responds.

Its obvious that Gerber was trying to be cost efficient when making this knife and i doubt Bear had anything to do with that flaw. All Bear did was take the Prodigy he used previous and said do this, this, and this and put my name on it and send me a bigass check! Gerber's fault all the way IMO.

I got one of the "Mark II" versions of the BG Ultimate knife from RockyNational. From the outside I noticed the following differences. On the back of the blade, the cleared portion for using with the fire starter is ground 2 1/2 x longer. The pommel is a different shape where it joins the handle, with a wider orange bit and the pin appears to be about 3 cm in from the end.
