Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife

I'm not surprised. I still love my old Gerber multi-tools though.

Sorry to see the trouble that was had with the blade. I'm sure Gerber is counting on the fact that most people who buy the knife, won't ever really use it. Save money on the manufacturing, replace the ones that get sent in, and call it good. Their choice of steel says it all.

I generally don't like serrations. I have them on a couple of knives, but only on the Sog Pentagon do I feel they are done right. For serrations I have a Lansky dogbone in the pack.

Very dissapointed to see the BG knife cop out. Not life threatening but definitely unpleasant. Ever since wanting, but never getting one of those ones with a compass hollow handle, and seeing one come apart and injuring the user I have paid alot more attention to quality and performance of blades.

Bought my eldest his desired Sog Spirit (spear knife) part of their low cost Fusion line. Still remains performing and sharp. We'll see.,.,.,.

this guy has bear down pat.
some of the "special effects" are awesome.
recommended if you need a laugh.
cheers.

I think the Becker BK-2 from Ka-Bar would be a great choice in a survival knife in the size range of the BG. The military style leather handle ones are not quite as tough, but many folks use them as survival knives.

Good to know. Thanks!

So, Bear Grylls teamed up with Gerber. Parody.
Les Stroud did it with Helle. Knife yet to be seen.
Ray Mears forged with A Wood and made a really expensive knife with a waiting list.
So who is next?
Mors Kochanski and Mora?
Lars Fält and Fällkniven?
Some other swedish survival expert and Peltonen. That ended up to be the M95 Sissipuukko.

I loved Gerber Knives in the old days. They were innovative and put out high quality stuff. Gerber was an extraordinary knife company for the times. They made Case and Schrade look stuck-in-the-mud reactionary. Alas, Gerber was never the same after the Fiskars buyout. They’ve gone down several hills since then. But the Bear knife seems to be a new low for them.

It's all marketing! I can't begrudge these guys for trying to make a buck. They all want to capitalize on their reputations, understandably. It's a shame that true quality was sacraficed for mass production, but that's business. Hopefully people will read the forums before buying, but ya know little Jimmie is going to get his hero's blade for christmas. I'm sure there will be a lot of that going on. Trouble is, he would be better off with a stock mora.

Gerber still makes some very good knives. The Bear knife isn't one of them.

Can’t really blade China. Gerber chose the design. They chose to have a cheap pinned plastic pommel. They chose serrations on some cheap blade steel, they chose the sharpener, fire starter and whistle. A lot of Chinese factories are tooled with the latest machinery. If you give them a good design with good materials they’ll make it as you want it. It’s one thing to have shoddy quality control, but this knife is a case of bad design.

Great post. My work carried these for a few days until a bunch of us went out and tested them. I was impressed with fire starter and that is about it.
