Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife

Just get the Gerber Prodigy. It's the knife Bear uses on TV and it has a better handle. The whole knife is made in the U.S..

The Big Rock would have been a good basis for a survival knife.
I liked mine, just the grip was too flat for my paws.
Apart from that, it was a very good knife. No need to look further, in my mind.

Let´s see if Gerber responds, pulling this flawed "hollowed" TV design from the market (in a few years;)).

My one hope: With the popularity of "survival" shows that Discovery is running, and particularly with this Gerber/Grylls collaboration, interest in knife ownership and use will rise. Naturally, some will be drawn to this knife (and the other ones not yet released). Especially if they're on the shelves at Walmart and Target (if they're not already). At that point, we can only hope that people who were interested in this knife do some research (and read reviews such as Horn Dog's) and look for something better, or if they do buy this knife, that they're able to recognize the low quality and look for something better.

Don't get your hopes too high. The main market for this knife is the same people that buy Ozark Trail and Winchester knives.

My big head-scratcher is why half the blade of this "survival knife" is serrated.

If they made it in plain edge and a genuine full tang it could be a good knife. As it is it's downright dangerous because it's an unreliable design marketed for usage in life-threatening circumstances. :(

has anyone actually seen it on the show? if it isn't on the show obviously Grylls isn't a fan either.

They squared me away when the knife in the handle of my Gerber Hatchet abandoned ship during an adventure. The new one has a really strong magnet.

It's a pretty new knife. Shows like his are filmed several months prior to airing. If he is using the knife we might not see it until months from now.

But didn't this go through some sort of massive in-field testing by the BG man himself before release?

But yes, I suppose it's plausible the testing wasn't used in his on-screen missions or was merely the last few months. Perhaps next season.

Sorry, but I'm still laughing over the "The rigorous testing we did on this knife included batoning" line. Somehow I'm not buying it.

I am a long time user of Gerber knives. I am afraid that this model is not up to your standards. I cannot imagine that a new one so constucted would perform any differently. I returned the knife to amazon and requested a refund. I will be in contact with your customer service team soon. Thank you for the response.

Clearly Horn Dog is a saboteur employed by the evil Kershaw-Benchmade-Spyderco triad.

I know it may be a risk, but I know I would like to see what happens if you allow Gerber the opportunity to replace or offer a refund. I say this because it is unlikely that a return to Amazon will get much attention back at Gerber. Amazon would probably destroy the knife and just get some sort of chargeback. I am sure a certain percent of the order is expected to do that. Going through customer service may put more pressure on Gerber to actually look at the knife and what is going on. Perhaps this is a running change that could be made.

I am disappointed. I was considering getting this knife for my son for Christmas. The price was a huge factor for me. It is also flashy enough to impress a teenager, and, well, that matters to them. He isn't an outdoor type and I hoped the hype of the knife would encourage him to give the great outdoors a shot.

Bummed. Truly bummed.

I sent back a Gerber multitool a few years ago that broke when I tried to use the pliers.

The warranty service was great, and they shipped me a new, larger version of what I had. Of course, like the first one, the pliers dont line up, the handles are still potmetal, the blade edge uses the handle as a bladestop, and the lockup of all of the tools sucks.

Unfortunately, with the quality of many of their products of late, their warranty department has probably had plenty of practice sending out replacement knives.

Alright, so we've established that the knife is less than ultimate. If we were designing a knife to do the same job, what would we have done differently?

A given would be to use 154CM and an orange G10 handle. A true full-tang design. A solid steel pommel, although really more G10 would do that job fine as well and be lighter. I don't know much about all the other survival kit because I basically only carry EDCs.

also get rid of the serrations. Personally, I would extend the blade length a little too. But your changes would have made a world of a difference with this toy :p

Mr. Gerber,

I like both your knives and baby food. The clip point Gator was my first folder, and I still use it regularly. Your axes are great too, best I've ever used for the price.

Any chance of making the Prodigy and LMFII with a pain edge?

If Les Stroud ever made a knife, I would buy that thing in a heartbeat.

I'm 100% sure that instead of a pommel that easily breaks, the handle of the Les Stroud knife would double as a quality harmonica.
