Gerber Love thread.

Yari 2 and harsey hunter. The harsey hunter has an amazing finish to the blade. Grinds are symmetrical and so is the sharpend edge. Blade is very tough and holds and egde well. Ive batoned wood with it. Made feathers sticks etc. Sheath is really nice too. Molded plastic with a lock button and multiple carry options.
The yari 2 is another good one. My only issue with it was the grind lines and edge are not symmetrical. The blade steel is s30v, which seems a little softer than other companies but may be a benifit. Holds an edge well but is tougher than other s30v, no chips under hard use.

Wow how Long do you have to be a member before you not considered experienced? According to his profile he’s been here for almost 6 years. Whew! I have a long way to go them lol

I’m definately no “knife idiot savant” but just wondering why so cruel.

Anyway I do like my Gerbers. Unfortunely I did sell my Mark collection from Air Force, army, marines, and navy with certs... never should have but I bought several more knives

I also bought another gerber though 1970’s mark 1

I also sold my mission mpk12 to get some vintage gerber

I have two sets of kitchen knives in the wooden boxes that are Gerber legendary Blades and i bought a Gator at the flea market a few weeks back giving my BM Mel Pardue a rest

Don't worry about it. This thread is about love for Gerber knives, and you had something relevant to add to it, so no big deal, imho. If this thread were from 2002 or something, it would be a different story, and I'd suggest starting a new thread, but this one isn't exactly ancient history. I remember this thread, actually, and I'm surprised it's been 4 years already. o_O

Unless the rules have changed "resurrecting" threads is not against policy here. I don't see why some people get so pissy about it. I've noticed the members who chime in to complain are usually not even interested in the topic being discussed...they just post to chide and belittle the resurrector and then leave. Personally, I'd prefer to read one long thread on a topic instead of reading multiple threads on the same subject.

The Bolt Action was the first Gerber I ever bought. I still carry it from time to time. I have three variations of the original plus a Parabellum and the filet BA too. I'd love to see an updated version with G10 or Micarta instead of Zytel and a pocket clip.

I've also got an old Gerber ridge.
It's a solid little knife when locked up but I don't like the blade, it's ugly looking like an upside down tanto and is partially serrated.

Pretty sure the only one I have left... Freeman Folder in S30v and Cocobolo.

I own three Gerber knives. The folding Gator and a boot dagger were purchased before I joined BF. I used the Gator one year as my "hunting knife". The most recent was the River Shorty (I believe that is the correct name) that I keep on my life vest when I take my kayak out. It has seen little use. It mostly just hangs in the garage on the vest.

I own 2.
The zipper pull, and a folder my father left me. Not sure the model, it has a bead blasted blade.

It is a thread about Gerber love, period. They are still going, and I believe they have gotten a bit better recently. Ups and downs in a very competitive market. Back when I got my Gator 17 years ago I thought it was the bees knees, until I got a CRKT M16 a year later, then I couldn't stop flicking and unlocking that thing until I literally wore out the lock. That M16 is long gone, and I still have the Gator for sentimental reasons as my first work knife, but it doesn't get used. Over the years I started collecting knives and lost interest in Gerber after a friend got a Paraframe that broke doing some light stuff, but even so snagged a coffin handle bowie here. Now with the Strongarm I'm willing to take a second look at what they got.

Back in the '90s I got some Gerbers. An LST, which was a decent lightweight pocketknife. Then I got a couple EZ-Outs (large size and junior), because I saw them in the DeNiro/Snipes movie The Fan. That's it.

I have handled a stainless-handled Gerber Silver Knight that was made in Japan, which was nice, but I never pulled the trigger on it, and the mall knife shop it was in closed.

I absolutely love the 1990 bmf injust couldn’t get to the point of buying the saw back... especially since it was going over seas with me to the Persian gulf and my motor sgt aaidntgat the Geneva convention specifically detailed no sawback knives.... something to do do with the nazis and whatnot... so I bought the straight back

It was relinquished from me overseas by my BMS and over a year later when returning to the states I was told it was a “war loss” and I shouldn’t have brought it. What? It wasn’t a sawback but it wasn’t an issue either so...

I ended up buying a steadfast later cause I couldn’t find a bmf anymore. Steadfast is nothing like the bmf unfortunately in size or weight

I got my BMF just prior to deploying for desert shield. I wanted to make sure I had a big knife while in the sand box. The new M9s were still fairly new to army units and I didn’t want to chance that I might end up empty handed. It was “kinda taken”away from me not due to Geneva convention rules but because a higher ranking sgt liked it. In the end I still have it today and it still takes a sharp edge.

I am jealous that’s for sure... to be honest I think my motor sgt likes it eaqually as well and just made up the whole...”since it wasn’t issued you cant wear it” ordeal. I still took it and even had it for about 2 months before I was assigned Tdy to work on TOC VEHICLES. Didn’t even have security clearance but we didn’t have enough grease monkeys to go around ... he took my knife stating something about getting In trouble for having it. I say BS but I never got it back. Lucky you still have yours... it may be “rare”? just a knife.. use it.

I have my LHR its really maybe only good for one thing, hopefully I will never need to find out Freind if mine has a few nice older gerber I may look into! Tell you about them if I get one

I've got a few Gerbers, and I can't say anything bad about them.

An 80's vintage Mk-1 my dad gave me when we cleaned out his garage - just a damn classic dagger

The other two were bought before I knew Gerber was so hated in the knife community:
An AR 3.0 folder, which was my wife's until she acquired my Leek - Classy little folder, with nice lock-up, silky smooth action, and one hell of a sharp blade

And the oft reviled BG Ultimate - This has been my camping knife for a long time now, and has been a rock solid tool for me. I beat the heck out of it, and it has yet to let me down. An occasional swipe across the stone, and the edge comes right to life. Heck, it's been so reliable that it lives permanently in my truck when I'm not in the woods.

I've had quite a few others over the years, mostly pre-Fiskers, and can't say I've ever had an issue with any of them. Are there much better knives out there? Sure are. But all mine have been solid performers for their price ranges.

I’ve got a big soft spot for Gerber, especially the ones from the 80’s. I remember the orange and off white box with the sword in the stone logo.
Kinda like the music you grow up with. You may enjoy other types of music but the songs from your youth bring back memories that make you feel nostalgic.
I’ve got a Parabellum that I carried on my LBE while I was in the National Guard, cause when I carried my MkII I got called “Rambo.” I’ve got a TAC II just like Jack Burton in “Big trouble in little China.” I’ve also got a non saw tooth BMF that is very similar to the one Tom Berengers character had in “Shoot to kill.”
Back then there weren’t hundreds of knife companies with dozens of steels. A Gerber was sort of a top shelf knife then.
That being said I think Gerber is going in a good direction and I think the Strong arm is a really good knife and I love the sheath.

I am appalled sir that Jeff's Metolius Series by Gerber doesn't grace your collection;).I've got the larger lockback and full-tang version and those were some excellent skinning blades.Felt great in the hand too and offer extensive cutting options.China made or not Jeff Freeman did an awesome job on the Metolius Series for Gerber.
