Gerber's Bear Grylls Ultimate, Fake or Real?

I'm in the Philippines and I just buy online. I'm in one of the smaller cities even.

Dunno why its so hard for the OP to state his location and I'm starting to smell something
I'll gladly eat crow if things will be made clear. :)

Is it easy/relatively cheap to get what you want shipped there?

Yes, Bear Grylls is fake.
His celebrity endorsed merchandise is garbage. Even by Gerber standards.

OP…It's real, but it's the first launch of this horrible knife. Your pommel is going to fall off. You can tell by the thin orange line by the pommel. When Gerber decided to fix the pommel problem, the second batch of these knives had a significantly wider orange "band".

Like many other members have said…get your money back and get something else. A Mora perhaps…extremely bland, but a real knife, and a good one at that.

I fully agree with AM515.

I recently got this for my brother as a gift. Highly recommended.

Unless it came from a Big Lots or Harbor Freight, I'm sure it's genuine.

I don't know a thing about them, but would refuse to buy just on principal; I hate the marketing hype.

Isn't BG one of those un-reality stars? That's plenty to turn me off.

He is definitely that. But to his credit, if I remember correctly, the Boy Scouts named him their national scout leader or something like that... I don't remember exactly but easy enough to find out. I'm not saying he's some amazing guy or anything, and I'm sure most of the stuff on his "reality" programming is super exaggerated. But I'm pretty sure he has some real survival skills and all. But don't quote me on that. ;)

People love to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to Bear Grylls.
Im not much for him because of his impractical style of survival, but he sure is entertaining to watch. I view him as an adrenaline junky who brings that type of experience to the field of survival. You cant deny that the guy is an absolute athlete, whether he knows much about survival or not, and I would guarantee you he could survive longer than I could in a bad situation, if only from sheer endurance. His Gerber line is not that great as a whole, but some are pretty decent for the money. And hey, at least its introducing knives to people who watch the show.
Then those people can realize that there are better knives out there, or at the very least have SOMETHING that could help them if the need were to arise. A BG knife is better than a chunk you just flaked off of a peice of sandstone because you know nothing about survival but saw someone do something similar in a show.....

I agree. His stuff is entertaining and some of it is actually quite informative to the layman like me who really knows next to nothing. That might not be a ringing endorsement, but as you say, he's also a top athlete.

The guy might be seen as a hack by some but, whatever else be said, he's making a living, making money off of this stuff, knife line and TV both. More power to him. A lot of my younger cousins like to talk about stuff on his shows and sometimes I'm there just to make sure they don't get too carried away. ;)

Can't fault the guy for making a living and, as far as I know (I could be totally wrong) he isn't deliberately spreading of bunch of "survival misinformation" or outright lying to get viewers or sell products.

If I was trapped in some terrible no win wilderness situation and someone told me that Bear Grylls would come to the rescue, I'd probably chill out quite a bit, let's put it that way. ;)

Yup, me too:thumbup:
And its interesting you mentioned deliberately spreading misinformation. A lot of people will tell you he doesnt actually know anything, but is told information by natives and experts a few moments before a scene is filmed.
IM FINE WITH THAT!!! WAY better, actually. You get real knowledge from experts, but its coming from a guy who isnt an overweight middleaged suvivalist from a rural county (no offense to anyone, im just generalizing the image that many experts have). He makes survival mainstream. His show takes it beyond just paranoid conservative preppers, and shows that more moderate people can also learn a few things that could save their lives some day. He is almost like the everyman concept in literature. The standard, normal guy who is unassuming and everyone can relate to, but deep down he possesses badassery, knowledge, and training that many others dont have. I say, good for Bear. Making a living, and getting to travel the world doing it. In other words, livin the dream

Hey, as long as there are knowledgeable natives and experts sharing their info with him and he is the showman, what's the harm right? If experts really are weighing in, we're getting some good info in an entertaining manner.

He was appointed the youngest ever Chief Scout at 35 in 2009, apparently. I don't know much about the Scouts, sadly. But unless that was some ceremonial position, I assume you have to know some stuff to be appointed.

Anthony Bourdain might not know everything he knows til a few moments before the camera rolls either, but he's entertaining and gets to travel to exotic places and eat some interesting food.

Agreed. Even though I hate CNN with a fiery passion, Bourdain's show is pretty entertaining.

Haha, I just scrolled up and I think its time to hand this thread back over now, especially since we were kinda off topic in the first place.....

Carry on, knife nuts.

And wheres OP? Is he out hunting for knives again?

Maybe it's just me but in recent years CNN seems to have become less biased... I don't know. I don't really watch CNN though, just read online headline stories, etc.

Shipping to other even far away countries is way cheaper than I thought, I think I need to send this guy a knife.

A lot of people on here are gonna try and turn you away from that knife (and for good reason :p). But to answer your question, the knife seems real to me, but two things raise my concern: the lack of a pocket on the back of the sheath (like you've already said), and the printing on the package that says "Made in the USA." I can think of possible explanations for these problems though. Your knife may just be an older model that didn't have the pocket on the sheath possibly. And the "Made in the USA" could just be a mistype. The packaging seems legit though. I would expect a copy to come in a cheap box. What really is gonna help you decide is which store you bought it from. If it was Wal-Mart or some place like that, you should be fine. For $60 you over payed though. You can get these (with no worries of them being fake) on Amazon.com for around $30.

So you have two options: (1) if you haven't used it yet, you could return it and get something better, or (2) you could just keep it and not worry about it. Hope that helps.

Oh, and by the way, I have never owned one of these knives before but I have had three different knives of the same model in my hands before (2 serrated, 1 plain edge), so I've had experience with them.

Sadly I don't have many fixed blades... I used to be exclusively into fixed blades when I first started, but I switched it up before I collected a lot. I have a lot of "extra" Moras though, since they're cheap enough to get a few good multiples.

I do have a Gerber Big Rock, which is arguably a better knife than the BG I would say, even if still a Gerber.

And I have a few better ones that sadly I'm too selfish to part with. :/
