Getting into the boot knife game.

So I recently went back to the big show working as a union carpenter I'm 51 and figured I'd finish my career with a pension and annuity. That being said I now have to wear a tool belt all day every day as opposed to having my own company and typically just wearing a tape measure holder and screw pouch which allowed me to carry a fixed blade full time. It gets to be a pain taking a sheath off and on for lunch before after and any other time as they don't work well with a tool belt. I carried my esee 3 for awhile with 2 sheaths one for my tool belt one for not but again just a pain.
I now carry a folder Gerber 06 to be specific but miss a fixed blade. SO!!!
I went on a search for something not to big not to small there are plenty of new options but I felt I wanted it to be old skool cool. I was going to get a western as I've owned one before and liked it but wasn't in love with it.
Last night I found what I think will fill the bill should be here next week.

I also picked up a different sheath not sure how much I'll love the original.

I got a pretty good deal from what I've seen they sell for. I paid 107$ shipped for the dagger and 26$ for the sheath.
Bill Cheatham typically used 440c or ATS34 steel from what I can find online either will be fine there doesn't seem to be any info on what he used for these knives. He made a single and double edge version mines the single which I much prefer. I'll probably cord wrap the handle but am already considering making removable scales for it.
I guess time will tell if I like and can carry it on my boot. I wear an 8" lace up wedge sole boot so plenty of upper to clip it to.
If this works out I'm sure I'll be looking for recommendations on other knives to carry this way.
I still plan to carry my folder as well as alox farmer so I guess I'll be a 3 knife kinda guy now😂😂🤣🤣

I would like to respectfully observe that you seem to be focused on the KNIFE rater than its carry mode. And looking at the knife options is fine, that is pretty much why any of us are on this board, but I think a wider look at your issue would be helpful.

I am thinking that a traditional belt worn sheath is out . . .am I right?
So what other carry options are there? A shoulder rig? What about You are looking at smaller fixed blades, so what about a neck knfie? When not wearing the carpenter's apron, would you wear sheath knife mounted inside a vest?

In the past, I have worn a fanny pack CCW bag around my waist when out and about. Not a fixed blade to be sure, but I did wear a large-ish multitool in a horizontally oriented belt pouch. Would a horizontal belt knife be made to work . . .the apron belt, like my fanny pack would ride over the sheath. t/is serves to hold up the fanny pack some, and keeps the sheathed multitool handy behind my right hip.

Whatever . . .p[lease let us know what you settle on and how you got there.

In my OP first page is the knife I am starting with. I have several options that would work but thought of this as an opportunity to buy a new knife🤣🤣.
The sheath it comes with as well as the one I ordered also pictured first page are where I'm starting. If that option doesn't work I could always carry my izulu or I have other small knives neck knives etc that might work.
Time will tell but I'm hell bent on the boot knife idea. As I've said I can just carry a fixed blade and clip it in my belt but that becomes a pain sorta and I usually end up forgetting it in there.

Plenty of places to clip a knife but I've done it and it annoys me.

I have boot carried for a long while as a back up when I have forgotten my EDC or if I need a different knife. I almost always wear slip on engineer style boots.

After years of fixed blades, I settled on carrying a Cold Steel folding Counterpoint XL with a 6" blade in my strong side outside boot. I got a screaming deal on it well below the normal asking price, the blade certainly is boot knifeish, it weighs next to nothing, and when I pop it open, it's a hell of a lot of knife.

I still need to put a Snaggletooth on it, thought.

For me, boot knives really only work in cowboy boots or rain boots/rubber boots. Any other style of boot makes it too uncomfortable long term, and too inconvenient to mount.

For what it's worth, IMO Horsewright Horsewright makes the best boot sheath on the market.
Thank you sir for the shout out. We do sell a bunch of those guys that's for sure. I make 5-6 at a time as we always try to keep some in stock.

"Boot Knife". . . .are we all talking about a small dagger-like fixed blade that might be carried in various ways . . .or are we ll talking ab out actually carrying a smallish knife in the open top of a boot?

Has anyone suggested one of the nicer iterations of the AG Russel "Sting"?

Your just fueling the fire on this boot knife journey🤣🤣.
The new knife supposedly will be here Thursday but with the weather I guess we'll see. Yes I have others I could probably get by with using but with a new journey comes a new knife .
Awesome pics and beautiful knives and leather work.

Thank you for the kind words!

This boot knife is what I refer to as a "hybrid". I assembled it using parts from two different knives. The blade is from a United Cutlery UC26, the handle is from a SOG Desert Dagger. The SOG handle provided a better grip.

The original sheath that came with the United was a chintzy shoulder sheath, so I made this sheath.

People often look down on United Cutlery knives, but after I bought this knife I heavily abused it to see what it could take and it came through without a bit of damage. As for the SOG handle, a friend of mine broke his Desert Dagger, so I bought the handle from him.
