Gibeon Meteorite for blade

I sent the meteorite to Delbert Ealy today. He will be shaping it next week. As soon as it comes back I will post a photo of the blade so you guys can see what he has done.

If anyone has seen a dagger you think was really cool or have any design ideas for the guard and handle, I am open to ideas. I plan to go in more of a nontraditional direction. I have worked on some sketches but nothing that I am in love with yet.

If Delbert is half as good as you guys say, I will be twice as happy as I ever expected to be. Maybe I can have this dagger completed in time to take to the Blade West show.

Yea, Del is about 1/2 as good :D JUST KIDDING! You'll be very satisfied with his work.

The gibeon meteorite will show a bit different. To some it may have more appeal. Seymechan has a fair amout of crystal formation in it and if bought in larger pieces can have a lot of waste. It also shows more cracks and crevices. I do not do heat treating of any sort with these meteorites. It is strictly a very thin surface coating. The ONLY cleaning substance to use on it is the Renisance wax which I now use for all my folders. The small pieces are now, for me, quite easy to do. I realize the larger ones can be more challenging. Del was a good maker to pick . He will have respect for your material ! Frank

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the input. This piece does not have any visible cracks or flaws. Just a lot of light scuffs. What is your gut feeling about heat coloring this blade? I don't want to ask Dell to do something that either he or you think the risk outweighs the results. I just saw the bolsters on your folders and was awestruck.
Thanks, Mark

Well,
perhaps hard to believe, but you would immediately know I wasn't after doing the knife. I thought it might provide an option that in my own mind's eye view would produce a beautiful result that realy shows off the meteorite !!! This will of course be a one of a kind art knife no matter what finish is used. However I believe the colours will bring in a very special effect but even have an association with the heat and flaming colours created by the mass hurling through the sky !!! Frank

Frank,
I asked about the heat coloring because Del mentioned in a earlier post that he was going to talk to you about your experience with the heat coloring. I trust whatever Del does with the blade. I do think the heat coloring would add an extra dimension to the blade, but only if Del says it is feasible.

Personally, I find it grinds a little more easier than say carbon steel Damascus. I go with just the usual belts I use. Etching seems to be say 25% slower. And doesn't that sound contrary? The meteorites are expensive but certainly, in my opinion, add to knives even when used for only bolsters. Frank

Hi Daemon.
I do know it will take high heat for hard soldering without a pattern loss. Frank

Yeah I actually knew that too, and that gets it red hot. So it has to be over 1300-1500 ( I think thats around where hard gold solder flows). Thanks for the response Frank.

Delbert finished shaping and etching the blade.
WOW!!!!!
This surpasses my wildest expectations. Delbert is amazing.
I knew he was good, but he worked miracles with the meteorite slab I sent to him. Here are a few photos. Your comments are welcomed.

Now, I have to get back to work on the drawings. After that, the next stop is Fred Rowe who will be making the guard and pommell.

Wow! Del did a nice job and looks like a fantastic piece. Can't wait to see it all handled up!

With all the photos you take of wood Mark, I would have expected to be able to see the patterns a bit better. Did you mist it with water first so they would show up better? :D

Looking good! I too look forward to seeing more. Great idea and collaboration.

Hey Phil,
You're a funny guy. These were Delbert's photos. When the blade arrives I will take more photos. I don't think we will need to mist it with water either.

Los Angeles,
I will not be heat treating the blade. The finished knife will be an art knife and not a user. Everyone says the heat treat will mess up the pattern in the steel.

Awesome project, nice work on the grinding Del! The pattern looks very 3D, the more you stare at it the deeper you seem to go!
