Gift option: Still allowed?

I should have added that gift only is a plague upon the exchange here. I have, on multiple occasions, checked if there was anything good on the exchange and EVERYTHING I see that I like says PayPal only, and all but a few say gift only or add 3-4%. I can understand not being in the business of enforcing rules for companies not supporting the site, but rules are rules. It isn't like banning stuff that isn't allowed through the chosen payment method is absurd, it is just trying to preemptively stop stupid (scamming) from happening here.

Seems like that would save a lot of headache in the future, especially when the people who were scammed can't say that they shouldn't have trusted the person... If they get scammed they have recourse or they broke the rules are partly deserved what came to them. The rules were made for a reason, and a lot of rules everywhere are to stop exploitation. Sadly it is a part of life.

Certainly not in all cases, but it seems like a lot of the ones requesting gift (especially the absurd +4% thing...can't do simple math?) are the same ones that misrepresent their knives, and by that, I mean saying you're the original owner when a quick check of your post history or feedback clearly shows you're the third owner...or saying that you paid XXX dollars for something and only want XXX out of it when you posted 2 weeks ago that you'll take it at the price you're now selling for, and you're trying to convince me I'm getting a deal. Or the knife hasn't sold after a day or two so the seller changes or deletes details about the knife that was in the original post that he feels is hurting his sale. When I see things like that, I can't trust the seller and just won't ever buy from them. Not a rant, just an observation.

Based on feedback, these sellers probably aren't going to scam me and flat out not send the knife, but I guarantee if I receive the knife and it's not what they made it out to be, their response will be either silence or "tough shit". Chances are good they won't be willing to make it right.

I'm totally against "GIFT" for 99.9% of transactions. I won't ask for it and I won't pay that way either...BUT, I had an offer for a knife I was selling, stating it was a USA sale only. A person from Europe contacted me, offered to buy it. I checked the USPS website and found I could only insure the knife for about half it's value. There was no way I wanted to possibly have a knife lost in route Europe and only be able to recover a portion of the value. I told the buyer I would only sell if he paid via Paypal GIFT. Still waiting to hear back.

Its not a rule here, and its not going to be. The owner of this site has already spoken. Its not going to change.

Check out the link I gave you(in my first post) from Tech. I think its near the end were they tell us it isn't going to change.
Many threads about it have been in this room if you want to search some of those too.

I don't like the "gift" option either, but it is what it is.
Not buying from them is about all we can do.

It's only a plague to those that support it by using it despite their better judgement. You are right, rules are rules and as Ken stated (as did I earlier in this very thread), they aren't our rules to enforce. No one "deserves" to get scammed, but people do need to be a little more proactive and cognizant of the way they transact with folks. We cannot be the common sense voice in the heads of everyone here that doesn't have common sense. At some point every individual has to take personal responsibility for their own actions, period. We just won't be in the business of doing other people's thinking for them. With the Internet being so prevalent in todays world, it really amazes me that people simply cannot be bothered to search things out before jumping into things. Especially things that can have an adverse financial impact on them. Believe me, if it was an easy fix we wouldn't be having this conversation today; because it would have already been fixed a long time ago.

Good stuff, Mr. Rev.

The only time I have paid using the gift option was 1) when someone didn't ask for it, and 2) when I was buying from someone I absolutely trust and who has maybe 50+ good feedbacks, and 3) when it was a small enough purchase that I was willing to get hosed. But its really a good idea to never use the gift option. If you want to do someone a solid, use regular Paypal and add 4% to it or whatever.

I just did some basic math and from what I calculated the "+4%" to cover PayPal fees means the seller is charging more than PayPal does once an item is over $30. Seriously? Not only are you not allowed to charge the customer directly for PayPal fees, they are charging more than PayPal fees. If you insist on passing the fees off, adjust your price accordingly, and knock it up a few bucks.

As for money orders, I have used them multiple times and the longest time, MO out to item in hand was about 7 shipping days (and that was from Hawaii). The few times I have sold via MO was the same case, less than a week from person saying they shipped to them getting their stuff. Like I said, people aren't willing to wait a few days on a sure thing but will just let an item not sell for weeks or months... That is plainly insane.

As for gift option being allowed, I hate to say it, but even though every fiber of my being is against it, it seems the god of the forum of blades, along with his tribunal, have spoken. I can only hope minds are changed without more people getting boned, but there is a sucker born every minute.

I will not use gift option for purchases anymore, but don't have too much heartache over paying the seller's fees if it's a good deal otherwise. It seems like an awful lot of angst around someone just putting they want payment via gift option. I would not forgo a good deal only b/c I have to tack on $3-$9 bucks (average for me). If someone tells me they want payment via gift option, I just tell them I'll add 3%. I've never gotten any blowback on that. I can empathize that someone wants to get $X for their knife. Sure it would be easier for the buyer if the seller would just do the math themselves, but i wouldn't let their laziness get in the way of a good deal for me. I think the vast majority of the time it's a combination of laziness and unawareness it makes people angry.

I always want the seller to go the extra mile because I always do when I can. If somebody is lazy enough to both break the rules and not know how to operate a calculator (or just simply add $5 per $100, higher cost but simpler) then I can't trust that the person may not pack lazily, or ship lazily, or something like that. You took the time to make your thread... What is an extra minute work?

"Gift or nothing" actually describes what you'll likely get for your money. Nothing!

I would like to thank those people who list "PayPal plus"or "gift" as they save me a lot of time and money. I don't even bother to ask for other terms or make am offer, I just move on to someone who can do basic math. It seems to me that over half the sellers playthis game now. YMMV

I have purchased a number of knives off of the sales forums - both production and custom and have paid for all of them with a USPS MO. Absolutely no problems(knock on wood)with the added protection of the federal government behind it if needed in the form of a postal inspector. I would imagine that the possibilities of getting scammed on a USPS MO is there, but I have seen a number of situations on the GB&U where the threat of the postal inspectors made the scammer cough up the knife or the money. There have been a couple of instances where I have asked if the seller would take an MO instead of PP and they have agreed. Takes a bit more time to do a MO, but I really do not like using credit cards/PP. I live in a small town and the post office is a 5 minute situation with someone I know well - I am sure its a bit different in a larger community. I don't see why more sellers don't go this route as a USPS MO is just like getting cash in hand - no suprises in a month or two in the form of a disputed PP transaction. Just my .02.

The very sad part is .... you don't even need competent in grade school math, there are plenty of calculators which will help you set your asking price without resorting to using "net" or + whatever. One such helpful calculator is here. Keep in mind, this one is only for US transactions.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this ..... just takes a little longer to complete a transaction. Many don't want to endure the wait!

why do so many people on this forum think they need to comment on how OTHER people choose to buy or sell! why doesn't everyone mind their own business???

Because Rodblder, people get bored and like to talk my friend. Its a open forum to exchange thoughts and ideas, By the way welcome to BF my friend. My mistake...thats 2004 not 2014, You are OG.

I will never buy with gift option or sell with it. It gets a little annoying when folks ask to do gift or add fees or add X for shipping. That's not howrun my adds, price I list is what you pay, shipping and fees included. But to each their own. If the deal is good I don't mind doing the math for a great blade. As for usps mo, takes too long for my taste. Plus, I don't need to give my mail carrier any more chances to screw something up.
