Gift option: Still allowed?

why do so many people on this forum think they need to comment on how OTHER people choose to buy or sell! why doesn't everyone mind their own business???

Actually, because this is the feedback forum. That's what these comments are .... feedback. In my case, I won't .... period, buy a knife from someone who won't/can't take the time to list a total price. That, however, doesn't amount to a hill of beans .... because there will always be someone out there who IS willing to buy it. Just won't be me. One of those quirks of mine, I guess. I no more like seeing the net or pp + in a listing than I do watching that inane cable internet commercial touting an everyday low internet price of $14.99! I cringe each and every time I see it .... knowing that the Paul Harvey version (you know, the rest of the story) contains things not mentioned (or included in the very tiny, impossible to read, text at the bottom of the screen). Things like, by the way, you also have to lease or buy equipment, and don't forget the tax and other fees. Your $14.99 internet is far from $14.99 a month. Tell me what it costs .... period. Don't make me do the work for you. I understand the marketing value .... but please. Anyway .... just my feedback.

I agree...I want the items I buy to be covered and want the buyer when I sell to feel protected. Ask for the price you want with the insured shipping and PayPal fees included. The only exception is overseas shipping. I'll ship overseas and will give the buyer more options with more cash out to cover. It bugs me when people say sorry "No outside sales" Charge them a lil more to cover the time and money it takes to ship and fill out a lil Customs Declaration.

What an ignorant statement. Really? You don't seem to understand what the term "community" means do you? You can do whatever you like. It becomes our collective problem when people come here asking for advice when something goes wrong in a transaction. As a community we try and help one another, that is what the basis and concept of "online forum" is all about. We have rules that help keep thins in check, but if you don't like it or are taking offense there ain't an anchor holding you here.

I also visit many fishing and hunting forums that have similar buying and selling activities and NONE of them have the complaining and whining about paypal or private deals or whatever as this forum has. Interesting that I make a comment how I feel and it's an ignorant statement. I guess the average knife collector who visits this forum needs more hand-holding that the other forums I visit. Maybe when folks grow up they'll learn how the real world operates and learn how to make deals by themselves. I suppose until they do, they have you to protect them.
do you do babysitting in your spare time also?

(crap, another ignorant statement, sorry, last one......)

No, there is no hand holding just discussion. Funny how you mention complaining, that is exactly what your previous post was. How is your comment about how you feel any different than a question about how someone else is being treated or feeling?

I'm not the PayPal expert some guys here are, but have sold somewhere around 100 HI's and a couple of nice Randall's and others, and have had very generous forumites OFFER to send the $ as a gift to save me the 3%, and have always refused, for a couple of reasons:

1) Even though I'm the seller, and most of the "gift" option risk resides with the buyer, I want full buyer and seller protection in case the deal goes south, for any reason. That includes if the ham-handed clod at the night shift at the USPS decides to drop a thousand pound pallet on my package, as happened a few years ago to a formerly beautiful Napoleon sword sent to Canada, which bent the sword and metal scabbard clean in half. When I worked on the claim the USPS demanded proof of value, and showing a PP receipt indicating the $ for the sword was a "gift" would have been a disaster; the USPS already intentionally makes the claim process difficult enough without that additional headache.

2) If the $ is sent as a gift then I don't have the buyers address, and can't use the PP function to generate the mailing label, and will pay a couple of bucks more going to the PO, or have to take the time to go to the USPS site and enter in the address. Also, verifying the PP address as "confirmed" is important, and if you don't get the $ for "goods" then you don't get that info. So, selfishly as a seller I'm looking out for myself.

3) Finally, it protects the Buyer, and I think in the long run that will lead to a higher buyer satisfaction rating and better feedback here.

So, yes it's going to cost a few bucks, but I try and price that into all the knives up front. I usually will just add $5 to each item, and at worst (for the normal price range of my sales), that will cost another $5 on top of that in fees. Just the price of doing business.

Personally, my smoothest deals are with regular buyers off the Exchange, who send me Money Orders for everything. No PP, no hassle, I generate the mailing labels on the USPS site, they often get discounts for their trouble, and everyone is happy.

well I guess ill chime in here now, being a member of Ebay and Paypal for well over a decade I can tell you that paying with Paypal gift leaves one open to anything that can go wrong.simply put if you pay with paypal gift you have no recourse if something goes wrong.

no recourse at all, just pay the fees and be safe. when I sell something I always absorb the fees. both parties have recourse. I bought a knife from a member here and they asked for in their description m.o. or paypal gift. I wanted the knife and simply told him I didn't do the gift and will pay the fees and asked to send me a total. and that was that.

we can call having to pay the fees as in having a little insurance. As my Grandfather would say,it only cost a few dollars more to go First Class, lol

If this hasn't been made clear enough, no one is forcing you or me to purchase anything on the Exchange here and in turn no one is forcing you or me to use the gift option. In the rare cases someone will ONLY accept payment as gift and refuse even if you cover the fees, you have an immediate red flag that something fishy is going on. But even then there are exceptions - not unreasonable for sellers to request gift only for overseas deals or buyers with no feedback/little to no history on the forums. Sellers should be allowed to protect themselves from things out of their control (ie customs and unvetted users). On the flip side, those buyers should do their research on the seller and decide if they are comfortable taking that risk.

Those who immediately pass on a listing that asks for "plus fees or gift" - good for you as there is no better way to vote than with your dollars. I make that request though and would not have it any other way. What is more fair than giving my buyers the choice of how they want to pay? Are we really arguing sellers are too "lazy" and just don't want to do the extra math? Cause that applies to the "lazy" buyers who choose not to do it as well. In the end, I can say my price plus 3.5% or gift -OR- my price less 3.5% if using gift. Seems simpler to me to use the former and just list the net price I want (helps buyers who want to pay using MO/check too).

I am very pleased the forum gods allow the market to work itself out with the fees. Now if I could only convince them to require sale prices to remain posted for sold items . . .
