Ginormous Folding Knives?????

That extra half inch or so can be crucial to keeping icing out of the pivot when cutting cake. :)
Seriously.

Twice so far I would have missed out on delicious ice cream cake if I hadn't had a knife on me (no other utensils around), and it would have meant big clean-up of the knife afterward if not for the extra blade length.

Some might be willing to trudge through life not prepared for the next time surprise cake shows up, but not me!

This has to be the best answer ever and the most truthful. I can say that this is more realistic then all the what ifs about knife defense and attacks everyone uses. 😀

4" blade isnt big or ginormous..ill leave it at that.

Out of any of these knives the Gunsite tanto & rajah ii have seen the most carry and that's a alot LOL.:thumbup::D Both have seen a ton of use too. ;) (Spyderco Military up top for reference...)

There's various reasons.

1)Some people carry a knife for self defense. I'm not gonna argue about whether or not that's a wise decision, or if knives are the best weapon for self defense, or any of that mess, but I will say, if you're being threatened/attacked and you do feel the need to draw a blade, I imagine whipping out a Cold Steel XL Voyager or Espada is more likely to scare the threat away(even if you never have to use the blade) than pulling your Delica or Super Tinker. Sure, you could say "why not pull a Ka-Bar" or "why not whip out your Busse Battle Mistress" or whatever if you want a knife for defense, but some places don't allow carry of fixed blades, but do allow carry of folders. I don't carry knives for defense, but my work is a prime example. I live in Texas, so I can carry up to a 5.5 inch blade, which means, if I did want to carry a big knife for defense, I could keep an XL Voyager or Recon 1 in my pocket, and be breaking no laws. And if I was walking down the street, I could wear an Ontario Pilot Survival Knife on my belt, if I wanted, also no problem. But my work itself forbids open carry of "weapons, including but not limited to firearms, knives, and pepper spray", so if I wanted to bring a knife for protection I work, the fixed blade is out, but I could still have that Xl Voyager in my pocket.

2)Some people can actually make use of the utility a larger blade provides. Say you're out hiking somewhere locally, nothing heavy, maybe a local trail near your house. Now, you might not expect to need a machete, so you may well not want to strap a machete on your hip, or, depending on the locale, you might not be ABLE to strap a machete on your hip even if you did want to. But if you do happen to run into some unexpectedly heavy brush, having that Recon 1 XL or that Rajah 2 in your pocket may come in handy. I know at least one person on these forums has mentioned using a Rajah 2 in those very conditions, and I recall someone else telling a similar story involving the Large Espada. Other people like the robustness of the bigger knives for their jobs, like on construction sites or whatever, places they may need to use their knife to cut something bigger/heavier than the box their latest Amazon order shipped in or the bag of chips in their lunch.

3)Some people just like big blades for their aesthetics, or coolness factor, or whatever, and don't require any other reason.

My 5.5" large Espada gets used for everything from cutting sandwiches and fruit to clearing brush in the wilderness, whittling, opening cans of food, and even shaving my beard as a "party trick" if it's recently been honed with fine ceramic crock sticks. It's a kickass knife.

Rajah II can take it, if a folding knife is required.

Espada may be larger, but grind, blade and construction are no match for the Rajah's thick, heavy blade.

I chop trees and wood with it quite often, wouldn't dare to do some of that nasty stuff to an XL Espada...

Runs off to go buy a Rajah II.

Not everyone wears slacks to work.
Personally I wonder why everyone seems to like all the miniature blades now. Mini this and mini that, kinda funny.

The knife that I carry the most when wearing slacks is a Benchmade Torrent- 3.5 oz. and 3.6" blade.

+4" folder is a full pocket! 2.5 inch-3.5 inch is great. 3.25 is perfect though, for me at least. If I need anything bigger, I use my small fixed blade, or my machete.

FKMD Fox Delta Spec-Ops Col. Moschin made by FOX knives.
Good knife, but for that weight I'll take either any of these:

Bigger blade

Better lock

I think it's really hard to beat Cold Steel in the "ginormous folding knives" category

And I've tried and had lots of them

I think k folks should carry whatever they like. If it was legal where I live id probably carry huge folders once in a while. I find a large knife can be more useful for some tasks, less so for others. That's why it's nice to have more than one[emoji2].
Man, cold steel has great knives, but geez, what the heck is this!? My brain![emoji33]

Lol, love the meme pic.

For most people that work in an office environment, people are scared shitless of a 3" CS Espada. The only reason I didn't get dragged into a meeting with HR for my 22KF karambit is because I actually use it as an electrician's knife for cutting network cables, boxes, etc. As tempting as it is to whip out the 6" TiLite or XL Voyager vaquero, i like being able to pay the rent.

I think the term for abiding by the wimpiness and lack of education on knives by the general public is "sheeple-friendly" knife.

You know, I always hear this, yet I never actually see evidence of it. I work in a hotel currently, worked as a cashier at a restaurant in the past, and I've pulled my knife to cut things in front of coworkers and customers many times. I've carried Cold Steel XL Voyagers, Spartans, Ti-Lites, 5.11 karambits, a wide variety of both large and "weapon looking" knives. Know how many people acted scared of them? Not a single one. Had a few people ask what knife it was, had a few comment "nice knife", had one guy lean in close to whisper me "sweet knife, but don't let the po-po see you got a switchblade bro"(it was actually my Ti-Lite), had a couple comment "big knife, did you make sure it's legal to carry though?", but not one single person reacted with fear, concern, or alarm.

Depends a lot on who's the person wielding or using the knife

A 260 lb, bald, tatooed beast with biker clothes toothìcking his teeth with a TiLite in a bar and an average man in cargo pants around the construction site with a 5.5 in. voyager are two very different things...

look normal, act normal and don't give reasons to alarm or panic, and most times you'll just raise some eyebrows

The largest folder I've carried (and still regularly do) is a Cold Steel Large Voyager. If I need/want anything bigger than that, I go with a fixed blade. However a lot of guys - including one of my best friends here - like to carry XL folders. My buddy carries an XL Voyager Tanto - it's intended use is strictly as a defensive weapon. Nutnfancy has a couple of vids where he talks about the XL folder phenomena - even Nutn himself EDC'd an XL Voyager back in the day with the same POU - tactical defensive tool.

They're fun and sometimes useful. My Fox Tracker with a 5.3" blade (next to Spyderco Ladybug for size comparison):

I can confirm this personally. I work in engineering (medical systems), and most colleagues get scared from a 3.9" Voyager clip point.

I used to get away with a 6" CounterPoint II XL a few companies back, but that's only because my boss and the head of IT were former soldiers, so they recognized it as a tool, and also EDC'ed, since the firm was in a shithole part of town.

One of the big problems with EDC'ing anything remotely "tact-i-cool" is that in my neck of the woods, we have no self defense laws, so it's like being a peasant in feudal Japan in a certain sense: you have to carry tools and use them as weapons only if you have no other choice. If you carry with the remote intent of it being used for self defense, get ready for at least 5 years of jail, losing your career, income stream, house; while the human garbage that is your assailant is back on the streets again in no time.
