Ginormous Folding Knives?????

So, over the weekend I was fortunate enough to get to spend a couple days the Blade Show in Atlanta. It was very cool, but it did raise a question. Why have the large folding knives (+ 4”) become so popular? I work in an office environment and feel like the upper limit of what I can carry is maybe 3.5” or so. If I carried much more than that, I’m sure someone would send me to HR! I’m mostly just curious on everyone’s thoughts on the matter.

Thanks!

Everyone's situation is different. In an office setting it is more appropriate to carry and use a modest sized "Gents Knife". Why would one need a larg-ish tactical folder in the cube-world? Others may have a different daily environment that allows or requires a serious defensive weapon.

Myself? My EDC is a Leatherman Wave, horizontally in a belt sheath behind the right hip at ~ 4:00 . It has two nice blades that deploy unobtrusively and is resecured with ease. Don't use the other tools that much but often enough to matter. The belt carry keeps weight out of my pocket and I can argue that it is "in plain view".

Seems to be acceptable in about any setting . . .even wearing a three piece suit.

On the other hand: Too Much Is Never Enough. I can relate to the earlier remarks about serving cake and feel that randome opportunities for watermelon warrant the availability of a machete , or in more sophisticated venues perhaps a saber or Katana.

Agreed, leatherman Wave/Wingman fits in most environments just fine. A SAK also does the job while still looking inofensive

Seen like a tool, an industrial-looking artifact

It's what I use to do most jobs when in public places, and nobody ever sees the Xl folder clipped to the pocket. No need for that

Sometimes a bigger blade is useful, be it for pure extended cutting surface (more edge to last longer time cutting), to reach further distance or to cut some things in one single motion (twigs, plants, roots, watermelons, meat, fruit in my case). Maybe you have a yard that needs some cleaning, and carry a "folding machete" so as to not draw attention

As you say, YMMV and you might work in a cubicle or around the general public, but we always have to remember that there are many lifestyles in this forum,

we often tend to forget that not everybody here has the same people around, job, laws or needs.
In general, I think this is th "les scary" scale for most places: Slipjoint/SAK < Multitool < Folder < Fixed blade
