Giving back contest

All of you good people on bladeforums have taught me a lot over the last several years. This is a great community and I'm very happy to be part of it.

This last twelve months or so have been unusually lucky for me. First I actually won a raffle at IG's last April (and have had to completely reorganize my shop to start forging). Then Mark started giving away burl samples, and running contests, one of which I won. Now Larry ran another contest that I won. This just doesn't happen to me .

In the mean time I've had a couple of orders processed by WSSI and I think it's time to run a contest of my own, shamelessly stealing from Mark and Larry's ideas. Here are the rules:

  1. I'll pick the winner on April 22, just before IG's next hammer in.
  2. Enter by posting which block is your favorite and describing how you might use it.
  3. One post per person, your post number is your entry number. I'll roll some many sided dice to pick an entry. If I hit a non-entry post or a repeated entry I'll roll again.
  4. You don't have to guess what the woods are, but it would be fun to do so, wouldn't it? OK, I'm identifying the woods now.

All the blocks are WSSI stabilized something, at least 5 inches long, 1.5+ wide and 7/8+ thick. They've been cleaned up with a carbide router bit in my little mill on the faces and sides but not the ends. This is how I clean all my stabilized blocks -- the results are probably similar to 220 grit sanding with less effort. There are still a few resin patches in low points that didn't seem worth thinning the whole block to take off.

There are four blocks, the pics show the front and back of each block.

First block: Swamp salvage redwood burl.
Second block: Driftwood redwood burl.
Third block: Chechen burl.
Fourth block: Spalted silver maple.

I like the 3rd block on the second pic. I would use it for an EDC I need to make to replace my old one.

Thanks for doing this Dan.

That block all the way to the right has some beautiful color changes in it. I could see those scales finishing out a really nice midsize with the forging scale left on it and some stainless hardware and some white liners. I'd have to try to keep the handle wide to take advantage of all the colors. Great blocks. Thanks for the chance bro.

I like the first block the best, I have no idea what it is but I think I may be save with guessing its wood:D
I am in the midst of making a couple of scandi grind bushcraft knives, one of which I will be giving away for my 1000th post mark. It would really fit in with the pay it forward theme you have going here

I like block number 2. Love the grain. Thanks for doing something nice for the great people here on the forum.

I like block #3 the best. Nice tight figure. I think I would make a midsized hidden tang in 1095 with a hamon and stainless guard. Thanks for the chance.

I really like the 4th block from the left in the 1st pic. I have a blade blank sitting on my bench for a year now. Finally I have some guidance on how to finish it and I'd love to do so. It would be my first completed knife. Also I'm going back to school so $$$ is tight right now. Thanks for the chance!

Dan you should be picking up a lottery ticket on the way to the casino right now instead of online.......... :D

I like the block all the way on the left. Nice lines a little bit of burl look. I wouldn't have a first guess as to type of wood. I would love to use it as wood for a knife that would be a present for my dad's 51st birthday next Jan (seeing as how I missed his 50th this year :( Prob something with a flat grind, and a nice nickle silver guard.

Thanks for doing this! Wish me luck!

The third block in the right hand pick is the piece that inspires me. Red mallee or redwood burl that would look nice on my spring fillet knife.

Thanks Dan for sharing:thumbup:

I LOVE block number 3, If I had that block I would find a maker to make my dad a kind of thank you knife, he got me into the hobby of collecting knvies, currently he only owns one knife, a folding spyderco. I would find a maker to make my dad a good fixed blade , he doesn't own one and a custom would be an amzing gift to give him.

the 2nd block looks very interesting in a rustic kinda way. i have a modified type of nessmuk im working on and would look great with that wood with light gray liner material...thanks for the chance!

The first one on the left, I see a thin kitchen knife to go along with the fine lines.

Thank you.

I like the one all the way to the right. I have a skinner I just layed the profile out on the other day, and maybe a nickel bolster too set it off.
Hey and thanks for playing it forward!

I like the first block, guess it's block D. I would consider it for a knife I'm planning on making for my father on father's day. Then again it would make a nice handle on a hunting knife.

Thanks for the opportunity.

I like #4. It's a tricky combo, and I think it would make for a cool bowie handle.
Is it maple?
