GniCr40Al4 Hunter

No, I've been busy with the parade float and getting some folders ready for Harrisonburg.

I was following this thread earlier this year, then it just fizzled out.

Did anypne make progress with the alloy?

Funny that this pops up right now. I was fitting a handle on the blade this afternoon. Once assembled and sharpened, I will post an update.

Hi,Stacy and Salem Straub, How is your knife going?

In these days, we have made some new progress for GNiCr40Al4 and the hardness up to about 61-63rc.

Last time, the productive technology adopted hot rolling and solid solution, then GNiCr40Al4 was directly aged aroud 600-650 Degree C and the hardness reached about 57-59rc.

Unlike "directly aged after solution",now the thickness of hot rolled GNiCr40Al4 plate is 10mm ,and after solid solutiong, it was cold rolled to the thickness of 3.3mm-6.5mm.

We carried out experiments on cold rolling plate, the result show that cold-rolling can significantly increase the hardness,as show below.

Moreover, use Ni based welding wire,a blank knife was welded 304 stainless steel and GniCr40Al4, it proves that GNiCr40Al4 is easy to be welded due to its austenitic microstructure.

I have to clean up the handle, but it is done otherwise.

I would be interested in the rolled material at Rc 61-63. Can you send me any information on availability. I would like to do further testing on this metal, perhaps ordering a reasonable quantity.

Stacy, my deer is already in the freezer so I don't have anything to test your knife with !

As for reading Chinese ,I never learned more than a very few words of spoken or written Chinese and I forgot those over the years. ! I still remember how to use Chinese chopsticks which I learned as a small child in China Town NYC !

:D
Stacy, I tried several times and at last I succeeded to post the photos, now you can look at the age curve.
Mete, likewise, it's not easy for me to use fork and knife.:o

Yes, do tell. I've still got my chunk of it, it's going to become a couple of folder blades.

How did the age-hardening go, Stacy? I was thinking about having the Bos shop do mine...

I might be interested as well in buying some sheet of the new 61-63 Rc material.

Just came back in from the shop.

As to the question about the age hardening:
I gave it ten hours in the oven at 1200F. It was definitely tougher after the aging process. I sharpened it with a quick and dirty edge and made some test cuts. It took a good edge that was somewhat "toothy" feeling. I dulled that back and will put a proper well polished edge on after the handle is cleaned up. My guess is that it will make an OK skinner/hunter. I will have to wait and see how long the edge holds up in use. I will probably do multiple rope cuts to test the longevity of the edge.

I'll send an email to hammerfall and yang+8 and make some inquiries.

No I won't, I can't find their email address. Will one of you send me an email at sapelt@cox.net

Hi,stacy, you can send me email at Linxiachu@hotmail.com, I like communicating with you very much,as well as others. furthermore, we are thinking about the way of sale.

For not cold rolled GNiCr40Al4,it can be aged at a wide range of temperature, about 610-650C,that is 1130-1200F. The best time for aging is 5-7 hours. So, aging for ten hours at 1200F may be a little longer, this overaging treatment may lower the hardness.

Somewhat differently, the peak aging temperature is lower under cold rolling as as illustrated above. The best aging temperature is about 560-600C, (1040-1112F).

Rosa,Thank you for your email. I am very happy to hear from you,I‘v written back already.how do you feel on GNiCr40Al4?

I have yet to really test the sample I have but I'll make a blade this week and send it out for ht.

This is a GNiCr40Al4 hunter made by a DIYer live in Jilin province ,China

Total length:520mm
Blade length:290mm
Blade Thickness:5.6mm
