Go Bag

I like this thread a lot. My buddy and myself,(both ex-Mil) have been building our own BoB's and every time either of us get a chance to compare ours to what other folks tote it helps. That said, I know for each of us we all have our own specific needs, but there still is an underlying foundation that starts the build. I'll try to get a list and pic's of my bag + my friends. I use a Paladin Mission Pack, Expedition. Working great so far with two test hikes in the woods. I also use an old military field pack I have as a day bag that I use to complement the Expedition.

I wish I could get pack status for how many threads I read :), should have found this site sooner.

Camel looks good, but so does Mystery! damn it! Does anyone have anymore pics of the camels interior? Hows pockets and storage? I like having alot of pockets and ability to organize my stuff. A little ocd.

My aunt just dumped all my stuff out of my walking bag, a Max Remora...and is stuffing her stuff from her purse in it to see if it fits while I am typing...

She said its a nice purse! And where did I get it...I feel so burned right now... lol. Also my Mrs' is yelling at me to stop being so indecisive about bags, she said not to wait for Esee bag, cause it could take months, and that its bugging her that I wont shut up about it! She said she'll just buy the bags for me if I choose them NOW. Well...I cant argue with that :D But I still like the Esee bag...damn it.

Welcome, I know I haven't been on here for very long. But I honestly love it here. I am on ALOT of forums. I have been building bikes and cars for years, I use to be apart of all 3 big "clicks" for autos, from euro, american, to japanese. But people would take pics of my cars or bikes and throw them onto their myspaces and claim them as theirs, or would constantly take pics I use to post publicly, and post everywhere else and have flame war topics on their forums. I had to go one by one to places requesting media of my vehicles and work, REMOVED. A few older friends of mine who helped push the rice culture in America back in the late 80s and early 90s, eventually had families and such, and moved out of sync with pop car culture. Anyways, they now have a small little group of which build cars and constantly compete with one another, most now own medical businesses or gear companies, some have given me gear and stuff since I had a near death experience and lesson in survival due to my own ignorance a while back, they and a few others have knives from Esee, and SUGGESTED them full heartedly. Anyways, though, I am on alot of forums, and alot are filled with tacti"cool" guys and arm chair commandos. No subtle or humbleness from them. Its like if you aren't "in", rag rag rag flame flame flame on the new person.

But here, its like "oh? you want to learn or be educated? or don't know something? than please! ask! ask!" everyone here is so helpful and amazing, it makes me feel so humbled and glad to be here. I often withdrew from social networking or related because simply? I don't like how most people treat others. Race, Sex, Religion, Politics, etc.

All joking aside on these forums, the guys here? Are truly a unique and special bunch.

My group of car fiends and such? Are all way way older than me, their car team has a set of rules, no show boats, no trailer queens, no media exposure, no net or forum circulation, basically nothing shared with people outside the group. My ex boss is apart of said group, they play with cars and "toys" I'll never own, lol. But have on occasion had chance to play with :D or work on O:) but those guys? Quiet, well spoken, helpful, and humble people. I don't make boat loads of cash, but when I go to things like the Gentleman's Invitational where some of the priciest cars I've ever seen are built one off? And compete like go karts? Where they all would presumably be snobbed? Are really nice, they don't put me down for not owning a certain fire arm, or if I'm not experienced in traveling or going to exotic places like them, or I wasn't in the Military like some of them.

Its like here, so many people know so much! And everyones willing to help inform or educate another person. "What is a man, if a man at all who doesn't try to change or better the world around him?" .

Please post pics of your gear and a list of whats inside! And yes, seeing other peoples stuff? Inspires one to refine and alter their setup and carry as well :)

You're ex mil? You have my thanks for serving btw, and that isn't hallow. I mean it. It takes alot to do what you've done, and it is appreciated.

Ok quick Q, anyone know if any of the bags mentioned are US made? If none of them are its ok, just would prefer to support our local manufacts opposed to anyone else firstly if I could help it.

And does anyone have pics of the insides of their packs? Like what they may carry daily with them? Just curious to see what you guys take day in and out with you on the go!

All Maxpedition bags are made in Taiwan, not in the US. There are only a few companies that still make bags here at home, but they all come with a large price tag. All of them though are great bags and worth every penny if you can afford them. Kifaru makes some of the best bags in the USA and it's what I carry, a Kifaru X-Ray pack with several added pouches. Tad Gear, Spec-Ops, and Mystery Ranch also make all their gear here in the USA. I know there are some smaller companies that make packs here at home but those are all of the ones that I can think of right now.

Spec Ops? Is that owned by Myke Hawke? I am looking heavily into mystery ranch, I think maybe a bit O.K. for my daily school bag, was looking at Max. But isn't made in u.s. as I said and you restated. Hmmm...

Maybe bite the bullet on my DD bag, and for other maybe MR or Tad Gear, I will have to dwell in thought, I really like the bag, Jeff posted a proto type of though! Dang it...

The web site is www.specopsbrand.com, it's not the same company as Hawkepaks.com but not sure who owns it though.

Eberlestock is straight out of Boise Idaho, right down the street from Chris Reeve knives and yours truly's apartment. Mystery Ranch is US made, next door in Montana. They're the company that got the official Naval Special Warfare Command contract to produce bags for our best-known frogmen. I'd check out the Kelty military packs as well, they are US made and around half the price of the top dogs.

Spec Ops Gear is the brand that floods out all the real products on military bases-they're sold in every gas station, PX, clothing issue, you name it. 90% of their products are absolute crap, I wouldn't even consider them for a Bugout Bag.

Eberlestock while based out of Boise, has their packs produced in Vietnam. They are still some of the highest quality packs I have seen, & for what they offer in size, build quality, & material, IMO they can't be beat for the price.

I use a camel bak Mother load in digi desert. I love it, I just got a water filter that I will throw in there. I keep knives and sharpeners food and extra clothes in mine.

I fractured my knee so I can't carry that much weight, and now use a shoulder bag made by condor. I don't like the bag that much but it works

Wow, I wonder when they changed that... It's been two years since I bought a bag from them, I'm almost positive at the time it was all manufactured in the United States.

I have far too many go bags... I have a couple of buttpacks, 3 different shoulder bags, a couple of small packs, a jacket that's loaded up for survival purposes. It's like finding the perfect knife; the perfect go bag is a journey, not a destination.... :D

That might just be the case. Alot of US based gear companies have had to outsource to keep up with demand & rising costs. Product quality often goes out the window when this happens, but if they had produced the packs here previously, i can say Eberlestock is still bringing in a very high quality product. Same goes for TAD gear having to outsource to china to make some of their jackets. No quality differences I've heard of yet.

At the same time..It is nice to have the satisfaction that something you just spent $300+ on is made in the good ole USA

Oh I agree... Eberle makes the sidescabbards and now you can buy the main rifle comparment seperately as well. It at least gives you more carry options with MOLLE bags, even though it probably isn't quite as ideal. TAD makes great stuff, I wish I had grabbed their tactical merino wool sweater before they got rid of it... man, what an ideal design.

You might want to check out Filson. Different styling, but most of the bags are made in the States and use heavyweight twill, bridle leather, and brass fittings. Lots of shoulder bags, field bags, couple rucksacks.

Plus, it helps that their products have a 100-year guarantee.

Exactly my point. I want to support business for people who are stateside. Just because I wanna help other Americans earn that dollar if their work is top notch and something I need :)

On a side note I just got new cam and knives, I should upload :D

I recently started considering duffel-bag-like backpacks as an interesting approach to BOB making. Those can be grabbed easily in a hurry, have plenty of space inside in a large compartment where you can fit things as you like, and look kind of low profile, at least compared to many "tactical" looking BOBs I've seen. I also find it smart to fit a sleeping mat in the rounded ones to add rigidity to the bag. :)

The bags I'm talking about are like this:

Those damned things kill your back in a hurry, plus the straps dig into your shoulders real bad if there's any kind of weight in them. But they'll get your gear to where it needs to go, that's for sure... Duluth Trading Company and LL Bean have old school style leather/canvas rucksacks that are pretty sweet as well. I'm not a huge fan of Filson, their stuff is everywhere here in Idaho and their clothes really aren't that special-Bemidji Woolen Mills, Eddie Bauer, Kakadu, Dale of Norway and Pendleton all make better quality canvas, flannel and wool clothes for the money, in my opinion. Not sure if their packs would be that much different.

Chenko I thought about that too, but the problem is uniformity and organization. If you have all sorts of stuff in there, even sorted by bagging certain items, you still need to unload everything to say, get to something at the very bottom? The reason I like "tactical" bags is because I can put pouches in a variety of places on them, and still be able to pick what goes where and inside, Mystery Ranch however combines huge size with pockets, I like pockets. Or pouches, more diverse the better, like with my tools in my tool boxes? Everything is neatly sorted, and clean inside. I like order in things. And in an emergency situation, I would like to have my bag with items neatly organized inside and where I need them and where I can easily get to them. Without conflict, or confusion.

However for size in account, the max bag series also has duffles in their offerings too. Which have straps for both shoulder carry, though I would've liked to see a waist belt added to those....to stop over movement of bag when moving briskly or about where bag rocking could get annoying. I carry a Mongo daily, and it bugged me sometimes that it slides around, so thats when I take its waist straps and click it. :)
