Actually, all four hobbits carried Numenorean (technically half-elven) daggers - blades of Westernesse, recovered from the barrow-wight's tomb by Tom Bombadil, until they reached Rivendell (elrond's home) where Bilbo gave Sting and the mithril coat to Frodo.

There is some confusion as to what Frodo wounded with Sting - he stabbed either a large troll or the balrog in the foot. My vote is with the troll. Pippin and Merry wounded several orcs before their capture. After their rescue, Merry went on to stab the ex-King of Arnor (the "head" ringwraith) in the back of the knee. It made it possible for Eowyn to finish him off. Pippin went on to the battle at the gates of Mordor. He killed a large troll. Sam didn't actually use any weapons against anything or anyone. Towards the end of the quest, he threatened Gollum with Sting, but that was about it.

Oh yeah ... KNIFE

Yeah, well, people ... They're in tiny pieces in my bag ...

This thread is becoming part of our lives.

In the future I will be able to tell my (grand)children :"when we were on page 7 on the 'go for the record' thread I started working with my new employer (which is, by the way, absolutely true ; wish me luck => more money = more knives)"

Gentleman(I use that term loosely here

there are only 11 more posts until 500. Lets get going. Knives always seem to get me in trouble with the wife.

Yes, I don't have a life outside of this thread. Or at least it feels like it.

Hi, I'm looking for someone who knows something about knives, did I come to the right place?

Sam didn't actually use any weapons against anything or anyone.

In the incident at Cirith Ungol, when Gollum led Frodo and Sam into Shelob's lair, Frodo used Sting to cut through some super-strong webs blocking a tunnel. Shelob, the mother of all spider monsters, then ambushed Frodo and bit him, non fatally. Sam then borrowed Sting from the unconsious Frodo and stabbed Shelob in the eye and belly with it, putting Shelob out of commission for the remainder of the plot.

I don't remember which Hobbits drew blood during the Battle of Bywater against the ruffians working for the deposed wizard Saruman. Except for the four mentioned here, most of the Hobbit militia were armed with farm tools (presumably including some butcher knives), and some had bows and arrows. I think Merry or Pippin, at least, killed a ruffian or two, but Frodo never drew his sword in the battle and went about disuading irate Hobbits from killing prisoners. Later, some unidentified Hobbits shot Saruman full of arrows after he killed Grima Wormtongue with a concealed dagger.
