Go Large--The BF Big Folder Thread

I have always liked large EDC, from when I first got into knives to now. Here are what I would consider on the "larger" side, I literally just got the Buck 110 in the mail today! I started counting things as "larger" at 3.5-ish inches, the smallest knife here is the 3.625" orange RAT-1, but by that logic, I should have included my large Higonokami, but could barely get everything in picture as is.

There are the twin Espada XLs flanking the lot, at 7.5", the outlier Buck 110 at 3.75" and the BudK "Delta Defender" at 4", the Ridge Runner Speed Demon stiletto at 6", Boker Kalashnikov XXL at 4.75", Yojumbo at 4", RAT1 at 3.625", ZDP Endura at 3.75", Cold Steel Kudu at 4.25", and Voyager XL at 5.5", a Holyedge Verlangerungsmesser-style clasp-bowie at like 5.7"

You might say the Espada XL is king and trumps them all. No. Opinel High Speed Weapons Systems has been in the lab, they developed the Opinel no. 13. which beats the Espada XL by 1.25" at 8.75", and the Svord Peasant XL at 8", I really, really want that Opinel!

Y'all have me carrying this one today! Opinel N°12. Bog- standard beech handle and 12c27 Inox blade, but smoothed out for easy opening and locking. 12cm = ~4.5". Anyway, it's a big carry.

Man, you had one simple decision... you failed. This is like getting the Espada Large instead of the XL! You were supposed to get the no. 13!
😁 Just kidding, I love your Opinel. I want one of all the sizes, and their garden knife, garlic knife, and their kitchen knives... and mods.

I just want the no. 13 so badly!

What is that beauty on the right?! It looks like a Navaja/Okapi fusion. Big sweeping clip. I love it!
It's a ring-pull navaja that I picked up for a song on AZCK a while back, unknown maker with zero backstory...the pommel is something I whipped up. I love it too!

I'll play.

I don't carry any of those^, but I do carry a customized manual Cold Steel Ti-Lite 6 wherever I go in a shoulder harness (concealed by a jacket).

I have been thinking about a similar shoulder-rig in order to be able to keep a folder as close to center-mass as I can without anything around my neck. One that accommodates the wave feature would be even better. Did you make it custom for that knife?

I originally made it a few decades ago to carry a fixed-blade, specifically a Next Generation Kabar, then my Wilson Tactical model 25. Both knives had/have kydex sheaths that allowed for inverted carry, and a firm yank was all it took to draw the knife. The sheaths attached to the rig with threaded posts and 8-32 screws using the eyelets in the sheaths. In the past I would sometimes carry a concealed fixed-blade, but I stopped doing that due to it being illegal and me not wanting to take the risk anymore.

The rig is designed so that it can accommodate a variety of sheaths. It could even accommodate a handgun holster, but that would be even more illegal for me. The sheath for the Ti-Lite is basically a leather taco with a section of bicycle inner tube around the mouth to provide pressure on the knife. It's very "low-tech", but it works fine. The handle of the knife is coated with Plastidip (like a hard rubber) to make the handle grippier, but it also grips the leather which aides in sheath retention.

I made the rig to be fully adjustable. I can adjust how far the item I'm carrying hangs below my armpit, as well as the angle of the item, like how far forward the handle of a knife sticks out. And I can adjust the section of strap that loops around my right shoulder so that it will still fit if I'm wearing more than just a t-shirt under my jacket, like maybe a thick sweatshirt for warmth.

Designing it was pretty tricky, lots of issues to deal with, like preventing "printing", preventing the knife from shifting back out of reach, preventing the cross-strap from riding too high and rubbing into the back of my neck, etc. And the angle of the knife had to be just right, if it stuck out too far forward it would jab forward into my jacket, too far back and it would be hard to reach (part of the reason adjustability was so important). But I figured it out and got it just right.

Well, I got a big Spyderco for Christmas. Don't know the model but it was made in China. It is too big for EDC in the city and I don't go camping anymore. And anyway, I don't really like the overall esthetic of most Spiderco knives, the hole and the hump etc. I know lots of folks do like 'em, and that is a good thing for you, but not for me.

My favorite BIG Folder is the discontinued Calillus "Cuda Maxx". A Titanium framelock with a 5.5-inch stiletto blade in D2. It just looks wicked and flips open like it wants to. The powder-blue anodized handle seems to say, "I dare you to make fun of my knife!" I don't carry it. I don't keep it either. Gave it to our son before he deployed to Iraq in 2004. He carried it EDC outside the wire. Said it opened MREs really well.

But all-in-all, thebaby blue Cuda Maxx is my favorite Big Folder.
