Going clipless

There are times when I like to have a knife with out a clip in the bottom of my pocket. But, for the most part I prefer my knife clipped to my pocket.

All my knives right now don't have clips. Its not nessisarily that I don't like them I keep them with the screws in a little baggie just in case, but knives seem to be much more comfortable without the clip.

I generally prefer clipping the knife to my pocket. I've had knives fall out when not clipped and I'm sitting in couches that sink in. It also makes the knife much more accessible. If I had to, I could carry the knife in the pocket, but I wouldn't always remove the clip in that case. Often I found that the clip can add to the ergos of a knife.

I carry all of my good folders clipped onto the waistband of my pants, just behind the right hip. I hate having them in my pockets, and they're also 100% invisible with untucked shirts, and very discreet even if you're tucked in, since 90% of the clip is behind the belt...

I'll throw my victorinox in my change pocket of my jeans, if it fits, or else it's in the bag. Not gonna be floating around in my pockets making me miserable...

I have only recently bought folders with clips on them. I can't imagine walking around with my manix 2 or even mini cyclone in the bottom of my pocket. I clip the knives between my back and jeans on my left back side, (I'm left handed) and find that very comfortable. I don't even know the knife is there.

Too much other stuff in my pockets anyway. SAK, Flashlight, Change,
Pepper spray, Fisher pocket pen, Cell phone, and keys.

Like another poster said, first thing I do is remove the clips.

I keep each clip (along with its screws) in a plastic prescription pill bottle, the kind with the child-proof caps. A separate bottle for each clip. Recycling plastic that would otherwise be thrown out. In case I ever want to put the clip back on, the clip and screws are all right there in one place.

Really depends on the knife and what clothes I'm wearing. No reason to keep a clip on if you're going to sit it in a pouch or pocket - your choice. I like clips - don't like them riding across my thigh when I sit, or trying to fish it out of a deep pocket then having to orient it to correct position before I can open it. Also can't see much point in carrying a knife with an Emmerson Wave unless it's clipped. Ditto a CS TiLite although it's not one I'd choose to EDC.

I only use knives with clips. I use to like a knife without clips but I found they slid out of my pocket. Alsmost lost a couple knives this way. I have bent up some clips real good but I can fix them easily enough.

The only clip i have broken unintentionally is my Spyderco Yojimbo clip.
Wtf? It had a huge hole drilled in the middle.
I'm not particularly fond of spyder holes on my hard use knives either for the same reason.

I have gotten to the point where I will only use clips if it is a low rider, deep-carry clip, just my preference. In fact that is one thing I look for in a new purchase. The only clipless knife I have, besides slipjoints, is my Spyderco Persistence, and I just let it ride in my left front pocket with the change!:)

I take them off right away. I do have a few that feel better in my hand with the clip back on, but those I don't carry clipped to my pocket. If the clip is not removable, then I would not buy the knife....

those of you who just drop the knife in thier pocket, isn't it bothersome when the knife turns sideways so the top and butt end of the knife make a huge print right in the middle of your thigh? i wouldnt mind carrying a knife in my pocket if it stayed upright
otherwise, i use the clips

I do agree with armstrong*skier.

I remember a post on this forum where the person said he creates a separate knife pocket in the front pocket of all his pants. He either sews a vertical stitch or uses a larger safety pin to create the appropriate size "knife pocket". Both of these methods hold the knife upright and also don't allow loose change to come in contact with the knife.

I've always wanted to try the stitch, but haven't taken the time to do it. But I like the idea!

No one has yet mentioned 'my' problem with a clip; a specific clip. It's the one that came with my new, MT Scarab. It is too dang strong. I tried pushing it down onto the pocket hem of my Wranglers pocket but even with trying to pull the clip open, it wouldn't slide into my pocket. In addition to that, I cringe at the thought of trying to pull the knife out of my pocket while it's clipped on. Forget using it on a dress pair of trousers...

So, I removed the clip and put it into the MT box in case I change my mind on using it. The knife resides in my left(another left-hander), front pocket.

Would a couple pair of vise grips or other pliers or a vise work to slightly bend the clip out? I had to do that once and it worked, just bend it very little.

I NEVER use them. I'm a BIIIIIG guy and have MORE THAN ONCE got up from a lawn chair and took the chair with me because an edge somewhere (arm or arm support) caught my clip.

I turned a corner at Lowes (home improvement) one day and caught a shelf with the clip of a Spyderco Endura and the knife went north, I went south, and the clip (what was left of it) went east.

Pocket carry since that day.

More secure.

Funny post! :D

Not to mention the possible damage a clip can do to automobiles and furniture.

I don't like it when the clip catches on things, damages seat cushions, etc. But considering the infrequency of these types of situations, I still prefer a clip on most of my knives. Occasionally I will take a small clipless knife along, but then usually put it in the small change pocket in my jeans. On an everyday basis I hate having a knife banging around in my pants pockets when I have lighter weight dress pants on.

I take it off if the knife does not allow tip-up carry. Example is Spyderco Para-military or Military. Awesome knives, but hate the tip-down only pocket clips. In pocket with a lanyard is the way they are carried.
Contact STR and get a tip up low rider clip for your Para. It makes the Para the perfect edc.
