Going clipless

those of you who just drop the knife in thier pocket, isn't it bothersome when the knife turns sideways so the top and butt end of the knife make a huge print right in the middle of your thigh? i wouldnt mind carrying a knife in my pocket if it stayed upright
otherwise, i use the clips
Not a problem if you can use a needle and thread :).

My solution to jingling knife syndrome is to put the knife (small sebenza in CRK pocket pouch) in my pocket vertically against the rear seam. Then I have something else in the pocket (keys for example) to eliminate the space required to fall over and/or spin around.

The result is a pocketed knife that remains upright and facing the right way.

I always carry two knives. One clipped to my right front pocket and a slip joint in my front right pocket.

My usual EDC rotation
EDC clipped:
Spyderco Salt 1 Se
Mini Grip 555
Small Classic Sebenza
Kershaw OD-1
Kershaw NRG
Kershaw Leek G10 / S30V
Spyderco Native S30V
Spyderco Delica 4 PE Krein Regrind FFG
BM HK 14210 PE
Spyderco Para Millitary PE w Tip up lowrider clip by STR

Pocket Slip joint:
Case small Gunstock (From my Father circa 1970)
Case med Stockman
Case Peanut
Victorinox Farmer
Case Barlow circa 1960

Would a couple pair of vise grips or other pliers or a vise work to slightly bend the clip out? I had to do that once and it worked, just bend it very little.

Thanks. I thought about doing that when I first tried the clip. I use to work on IBM electric typewriters(including the amazing Selectric!) as a CE for IBM. Many times a part made of aluminum or a 'soft' metal needed to be "formed"(not bent;)) to fall within its adjustment limitations. I may try it on the clip but then/now I worry about the skate tape on the Scarab and what it would do to my trouser's material...

I was using a Gerber Mini Fast Draw clipped to my pocket, but the clip was placed poorly, and the knife was sticking out of my pocket and getting in the way. Removing the clip leaves an indent in the handle on an otherwise nice looking knife. Also, the knife was opening in my pocket when I pulled it out.

I now carry a SOG Flash, and the clip is placed so that the knife is below the top of my pocket. The clip is also shaped so the knife stays put, but is easy to grab when you need it, and the knife stays closed even with the lock off.

With a knife in the bottom of my pocket it tends to collect guitar picks which I keep in there. So, I've come to the conclusion it depends on the knife, the design of the clip and the pocket you keep it in.

The ideal compromise for me; a clipless knife in clipped pouch. The knife stays clean and instantly accessible at the top of your pocket, but you don't have to deal with the potentially awkward ergos and afterthought-looks of the typical 'captive' knife clip.

I carried my 110, SAKs, slippies, etc, in my pocket for years - I can carry anything clipless - and do. First item of business upon arriving home with my new knife - like yesterday with my new B-M 425 Gravitator - remove the clip. I stow the screws and clip in the original packages - just in case.

About the Benchmade screws... I've ruined a Craftsman US made T6 and two of the Torxx sets from Lowes removing them. Yesterday's screws were just as hard - until I heated them up, by placing the 'dry' (ie, wipe the hot tip free of solder with a rag!) tip of a 30 W soldering pencil in the Torxx head recess for 10 seconds or so. That breaks the blue Loctite B-M uses to secure the screws (They admitted to it's use in a call I made to them for more screws!). They will still be a tad stiff - but keep the downward pressure as you unscrew them.

I started removing Kershaws' clips years ago - then Spydie - put them in a ziploc bag - dumb move! Put them in the knive's packing.

I carry my Surefire E1b Backup clipped in my front pocket. I have bumped chairs, displays, car door frames, etc, and luckily heard it fall. The little beast is beat up - but I still have it 1.5 yr later. I don't carry open back folders unless they are in a pocket sock, sheath, etc - tired of pulling change out of the open backs! Of course, a knife is a tool to me - my legal protection is much louder.

I dont use the pocket clips and always say I'm going to take em off but something inside never lets me do it like I'm compromising the integrity of the knife or something.

I have been taking them off any of my smaller knives (Mini CQC7B, BM 940), anything medium (BM 551 Grip, Mini Commander) to large (Super Karambit) I still use them. Mostly the knives I use with dress slacks are smaller and I don't like to clip, jeans get clipped.

i had enuff fun with no clips for about 30 yrs and imho the clip helps a lot so no i never ever remove them.
