Going gun shopping

Oh, ALBPM; great looking rifles.

I couldn't hit that well with a FN the few times I tried for some reason. Too used to the deer rifle feel of the M1A, I guess. It is a really great machine though. I'd prefer it to the german G3.

I think both the AR series and the FN's are shooting platforms. You cradle or become 'enveloped' in the system. That's as close as i can come to explaining it. I like it, but it is different.

munk,

I'd hate to see it stolen, too...but I'd rather lose it than the custom Montana 1999-actioned sporter I'm getting in Whelen, as well! That rifle I'm getting at least a $600 discount on! I'll probably only have $600 in the 7600 even after I add my Williams FP sight, new stock and forearm, sling, and a couple aftermarket mags.

I've only fired a few .357 bullets loaded in a Whelen, but I did pretty well, just kneeling and using the peep sight on my friend Matt Guest's converted Springfield. :)

The birth of a gun snob. High class now. !!! Hey, tell me about the Montana rifle?

I have a Willians peep on my 45/70 As promised, with quick instinctive shots, it works great, the eye just naturally centers. But on target; oh Brother. I fuss and wiggle and readjust and my groups are awful. I do better with the sights on the Garand or M1A for some reason.

munk,

Honestly, "value priced" is good to me! However, I had an offer from my good buddy Oleg (I've been blessed with some really great friends; whenever I doubt my life so far, if I just remember the friends I have somehow been blessed to acquire, I am satisfied), who was doing some advertising work for Territorial Gunsmiths.

Oleg knew I was a fan of the .35 Whelen, and that I'd traded my Remington 700 .35 to a mentor who'd admired it (said mentor isn't in the best of health, and I figured, who knew when I'd have another chance to do him a good turn). He had an offer for me: his friend RC Hengl would make me one at cost.

Well, I'd received some money from funds that the VA had been neglecting to pay me for a couple of years, was about to leave the country, and knew I might never get a chance to get another custom sporter made especially for me anytime in the near future...and certainly not at cost!

Anyway, the rifle is built on a Montana 1999 action. It's basically the "Dangerous Game Caliber Package" with a hobbit-sized LOP and pop-up peep sights instead of the express sights usually on this package.

Laminate stock
Hand lapped 22" stainless barrel
Ebony tip
2 recoil cross bolts
Duracoated
etc...

Okay, so maybe Blake's hat is a little "over the top"!

John, who doesn't want to be a trademark? :p

Like the slide action rifle concept.

I bid on a few, but never won one.

Went the brazilian mauser route instead. Disaster so far. It is fixable, but won't be the bargain 30/06 I wanted it to be at that point!

The old swiss long rifle still does it for me, esp. after the Brazilian experiment.

Until I get something better to come along, the trusty 7.5X55 will be OK. Fits me better than any other rifle I've owned, shoots where I want it to.

Nice chatting with you fellas!

Tom

ps. Thanks for the info on the M1A bolt stop!

pps. Like the hat too!

Always wanted one of those hats.

Nice rifle!

Try Henry the Hatter in Detroit.....I have three, all over 15 - 20 years old. Stay away from wool felt, it folds down in hard rain.....get a felt based on animal fur...I believe mine are antelope fur felt and have held up for months in real jungle. Mention Italian makers to Henry....he'll hook you up if still in business.
