I just wanted to let you guys know about a nice little bag I found a Cheaper than Dirt (who I am not associated with) that works pretty well as a small bail out bag or grab and go day hiker. It cost $12.97 and is similar in style to the Maxpedition Proteus pack which I also own. It is a well built little bag although not bomb proof like the Maxpedition stuff, but for the money I think it is well worth having a couple of these around. It is called the MOLLE Deplotment Bag and it measures 11.5x5.5x6". I apologize for the picture quality but here they are.

I was also thinking about getting it too, but I see that the strap doesn't become a waist belt. There is one made by another company which is the same thing as this one but has the waist strap to put it as a waist pack. I also found that it not big enough for my water filter which I carry everytime I go out hiking or camping.

Hey GEC, who makes the other pack that converts to waist carry?

It is pretty hard to beat a Maxpedition Proteus if you really use the pack a lot. I have a bunch of Maxpedition gear and is is built amazingly well. Where these other bags shine in my opinion is for just throwing under the seat, or occaisional use type bags. Although this is a pretty darn tough little pack.

Looks like a very cool bag, thanks for the heads up. I might pick one up next time I order. I've always been bad about translating numbers into real-world dimensions; what would fit in the bag? Just size-wise, would a nalgene shove in the main compartment?

Oh, and does it seem like it's so thick that it would feel cumbersome/uncomfortable if worn as a butt pack/waist pack?

Will this pack accept a belt, running through the straps in the rear? Or will the Maxpedition type of malice connectors need to be used?

Hiya Tolly. Thanks for posting up the pics and review of the little MOLLE pack. I have always looked at those and wondered what they were like. Now that you've posted pics of almost every angle of the bag, I have a complete understanding of how it is set up. I can think of a few places where I could apply a bag like that. Thanks a bunch! I'll start compiling a CTD order.

I saw some on Ebay and I think they are made by Voodoo tactical. I think. I'll try to dig up the site and post it for ya.

Yeah, I would definitely get this if it came with a waist strap. Hum, I wonder how it would ride on a instructors belt though?

Can we get some glamor shots on this attached to a belt? Wearing in front and back?

I'll see if I can get one of the local Miller Lite girls to strap it around their waist so I can take a few pictures of it for you.

I just ordered one, and a cheap belt to go with it. It'll probably be too small for all the stuff I over-pack on a hike, but it splits the difference between my daypack and my fannypack, and will probably ride okay on the fannypack belt anyway. For twelve bucks, there's no reason not to try it out. Thanks, Tolly.

I've been thinking the same thing. I'd love to get something that will let me not wear a backpack, but still feel light and comfortable for extended walking. I don't want to have an overloaded butt pack smacking against the small of my back all day, but I don't want to carry something so small it's not worth trying. Tough decisions!

It would be neat if this felt good on the belt, so that I could couple it with a GI canteen/cup/pouch and be good to go for a day hike!

For the day I tend to just want some 'emergency' goodies, snacks, water, knife and possibly hatchet, first aid kit and a poncho/thin tarp for shelter.

I picked it up at a local surplus store without realizing it was a Maxpedition rip-off. It's still in good shape, even after being EDCed for over a year. Whenever it finally wears out I'll probably get the real thing. Easily worth $12 and change. Good score.

After reading the reviews for this pack on CTD, seems a few didn't like the small size, but I'm thinking that it'll be just about perfect for my needs. Replace the flimsy zipper pull tabs with something more substantial, attach my USGI poncho, fill it with goodies and it should be good to go.
